Dave Warner for Australia?
Dave Warner is currently enjoying a very fruitful tour of Zimbabwe. He has scored 132 in the A team final vs South Africa A. He then scored a brilliant 164 vs a Zim XI in a 2 day game, which was unfortunately not a 1st class game. He then scored a brilliant 48 and 82 in the 1st A team 'Test'. Then today he scored a brilliant 211 vs a Zim side whom will be playing Bangladesh and New Zealand in Tests soon.
With the Australian middle order pretty weak at present, Watson could slip in at 3/4 and Warner could open up with his buddy Hughes, Warner could give Australia those lighting starts, which have been missing since Hayden retired.

Re: Dave Warner for Australia?
Sounds good to me... even if he opened with Watson (I don't think our selectors will change that soon) it would seem a pretty solid combination.
Shades of David Boon in Dave Warner... I can see many fans getting behind him if he were selected for Tests and we need stability and a level headed player rather than a flashy batsman like Hughes to help us get back on track.

i no he's out of the equation, but from an english point of view, i would rather see hughes in the team, because you have more chance of getting him out then you do katich

? The thread is about David Warner.
What chance do you have of getting him out? That is the question.

Re: Dave Warner for Australia?
i heard that warner hasnt played many odi's and only plays t20 for australia, because he cant control himself that much....
i think he is very talented, and may test cricket one day, but i dont think he has the temperant at the moment.

I hope so mate. I must admit I was surprised to hear he's knocked up a few big scores in Zimbabwe... but as we all know - they are no England!

i dont think he will get the call up anytime soon, i think he needs a few more seasons in state cricket, or maybe come over to england, and play some county cricket

You're probably right there, unless there is some drama again later this year but there are guys like Marsh who would be preferred. (just that the NSW players seem to get selected for the national side)

i think a stint i england, in county cricket will do him good...
i personally think domestic cricket in england is stronger than domestic cricket in austrialia, also he will get a chance to perform in different conditions

(just that the NSW players seem to get selected for the national side) I could see Warner in the side by next year or two though... if he has a good SS this summer and has a stint in CC say in 2012. All depends how we go against India later on this year and whether more changes are required at the top of the order.

Re: Dave Warner for Australia?
It was Virender Sehwag who has told his IPL teammate David Warner that if he makes some mental adjustment he can become a good test cricketer. Certainly Sehwag should know, he too plays his shots in test cricket, more effectively than anyone else at present, and has been doing it successfully for the last 10 years.
I believe Warner is better than Philip Hughes.

Re: Dave Warner for Australia?
yes msp... Virender should know. He's pioneered that super aggressive style from the top of the order. He's be a great mentor for Warner. Agree about him being better than Hughes too.
Yes cf, it should be fireworks watching him batting with Gayle...

Re: Dave Warner for Australia?
Khawaja could open but it would be a big ask for someone so young and inexperienced - although he has a good head on his shoulders. I think he would be a good 4 (when Ponting retires). Senior batsmen should be asked to take more responsibility. So I'd go for:
Watson (could//should be D.T.O. but if he's happy there I won't argue...)
Hughes/Marsh/Warner ? prefer last 2!
Clarke
Khawaja
Punter
something like that... I haven't given too much thought since we are in mid winter here. No FC matches to guage form.

yh possibly, i think they will ease ponting out of the team...
i also think they should ditch hilditch the selector.

Re: Dave Warner for Australia?
At first I wasn't in favour of it but I think over time he will be OK. Most important to get on with the other guys - from what I heard there was some friction - but this may ease as certain players retire and the others get used to him.

Yeah, he's popular and a 'leader' type but maybe he's too old at 33.

Re: Dave Warner for Australia?
Being an ardent NSW fan, I'd like to point out a few facts:
Phillip Hughes is way superior to Dave Warner, you don't score 16 1st class hundreds, if you can't bat. Secondly Hughes has the distinction of being the youngest batsman in Test history to score a hundred in each dig of the match. Technical faults are over rated, the best ever Sir Donald Bradman had an unorthodox style, yet he averaged 99.94.
Khawaja isn't seen as a one day player, he seen as a 1st class specialist. He gets a few game in the NSW one day side when the Warner's etc are way on national duty.
Shaun Marsh shouldn't really be close to the Test side, his 1st class record is pretty poor, average under 40, coupled with his all ways unfit.
Pup(Michael Clarke) isn't suited to 3 in Tests, he is at his best at 5.
My top order would be:
1. Phillip Hughes
2. Dave Warner
3. Usman Khawaja
4. Shane Watson
5. Michael Clarke
6. Ricky Ponting/Michael Hussey
7. Tim Paine (w/k)

Re: Dave Warner for Australia?
Warner has been told go and score bucket loads of runs, and he's currently do so.
This last few 1st class games he has scored 99, 114, 82, 211 plus the 130 odd in the A team one day final.

Re: Dave Warner for Australia?
Only the 82 and 211 where against Zimbabwe. The 99 and 114 where in the Sheffield Shield. The 134 against a very decent South Africa A bowling unit.cricketfan90 wrote:longhopmerchant wrote:Warner has been told go and score bucket loads of runs, and he's currently do so.

From what I know of Greg Chappell, he loves youth, look at his stint with the Indians, he got 5-6 youngsters in at every opportunity.
