When's the next meet-up?
First topic message reminder :
If there's no date already agreed, may I suggest one after 22nd September? That's the date the dogs will be joining Mrs Mercurio in Switzerland meaning I've got no more ties to home.

If I'd have been playing this year I would have chosen Goodwood (I know it well). That'll do me next year.
I like the comments about the 6th tee - one of the finest golf views in the UK

As no-one has suggested any days, may I suggest Saturday 27th August at Mannings Heath for the first 4ball 36-holer (if we get more than 4 people, we'll cross that bridge then)?

I could make 27th August or 1st October. Other than that probably going to have to be a Sunday for me due to work.

Unless we are going to go for a couple of weekdays, I could probably do something then no problem.

OK, if we get two more for the 27th, we'll do that. Then, we'll do another one in October for the 606 glitterati. I'll be home alone by October so I'll be able to offer a bed (or two) at Chez Mercurio.

Weekdays are no good for me. I've only got 4 spare days holiday and the Doris wants me over in Switzerland for Christmas (which I find a bit selfish, to be honest, but needs must).

Joking aside, Brighton is a great place for a night out. Don't worry, the gay scene mostly remains within Kemp Town which is easy to avoid.Noshankingtonite wrote:Hmmm... interesting. What a pity I don't bat for the other side chap

Eldest, not engineering no. Nothing so glamorous. I'm a tax adviser

That's ironic because I'm a tax adviser working for an engineering company!

Yeah and VAT; and employer taxes; and personal tax returns for our ex-pats.
I really should demand a hefty payrise . . .

Oh undoubtedly!
No doubt you've just recovered from P11D season, which is always fun!?!
Put me anywhere within 100 yards of a VAT return and i start to get clammy. I feel a little ill now just thinking about it

I'm the Group Tax Manager so I don't deal hands-on with the procedural elements of employer taxes like P60s and P11Ds (I couldn't do anything that boring). As far as employer taxes are concerned, I manage implementation of changes in legislation, tax and NIC planning, dispensations, strategy, etc.
I don't prepare the VAT returns, either. Again, too boring for me and there's someone else to do that.
The only compliance I do is the group's corporate tax returns and the tax returns for the ex-pats which are too important/sensitive to delegate.

No wonder you have plenty of time to post on here
I'm probably about as far up the other end of 'tax advising' as you can get. I look after private clients, so very hands on, very personal, lots of meetings, telephone calls etc. Anything and everything from compliance to planning for income tax, CGT, IHT (he says say in front of a half drafted IHT advice letter). I don't do the P11Ds (used to in a different job - nightmare) or P60s, and definitely not the VAT! We also have 'people' for that. I say 'people' but i'm not sure any normal person could spend their life in VAT........
I'm lucky enough to look after a fair few clients in the entertainment industry which keeps things fairly interesting.
I'm sure we'll have a chat at the meet up, and bore the others to death!

Re: When's the next meet-up?
I used to work in Private Client. Estate tax planning for HNWI, especially for non-doms. I got out just before ICTA s739/s740 were updated in ITA 07 and the new remittance rules were brought in.
My background was in practice with Big 4/law firms, but I'll never go back. I couldn't face a timesheet again for starters!

Re: When's the next meet-up?
Timesheets, what i'd do to get rid of those.
In honesty i keep meaning to investigate going into 'industry' rather than practice. Problem is most of the jobs like yours, are based in VAT and CT and neither particularly appeal.
Where are you current non doms based out of interest? Some places are easier to deal with than others, as you'll no doubt know!
I used to be at a really small firm and had a client who was a Hungarian construction firm. They built those big windowed buidlings (Petronas Towers type things). They had an expat payroll which was a net pay with arrivers and leavers, de minimis allowances agreed with HMRC, all whilst trying to maintain a non res position for the employees. Thing is the computer system at this firm wasn't up to it and the hours i spent doing this thing by hand......... Good times?!

Bertie - a bit like you and me we faded out of touch. It's a shame as he was a very entertaining chappie. I know his real name so I may go into stalk mode and try and track him down.
Let me know whenever you fancy Cobtree - I fancy my chances of shooting low around there now!

Eh...Saunton = 0.2 increase, no birdies, a 10 at a hole, soaking gear and an admission that it will take a while to learn the art of coping in adverse conditions on tough links!! Great day out though in spite of all that
