BRITISH SM SUPER 8/Head-to-Head
First topic message reminder :
Introducing
Nigel Benn(s)
Chris Eubank(s)
Michael Watson(s)
Steve Collins(s)
Joe Calzaghe(s)
Carl Froch(s)
Richie Woodhall(s)
Robin Reid(s)
I read with 'interest' the age old "Steve Collins would have beaten Benn and Eubank at any stage of their careers" snit-fest and wondered how people thought the likes of Froch would have fared against the cream of the 1990's British SM crop. Then if figured I'd thrown in a few other names and see if it generated any interest.
I'm aware it's unlikely as...
A/ I wrote it and
B/ Everyone knows Richie Woodhall cleans up in the lot of 'em about half an hour and still has time to avenge his loss to Roy Jones Jr
Cheers

Calzaghe top of that particular pile, and I would ave Froch or Eubank second depending on the day I'm having.
I've made it pretty apparent over the years I don't rate Benn at SMW, and agree with the comment about McClellan being a Lacy, whose only claim to fame was outpunching shot-to-pieces former big hitters.
Collins would be fourth, outworking Watson who is fifth.
Reid would beat Benn, but might finish below him in the pile due to inactivity.
Sorry Woodhall. Cannon fodder.

Miserable because of the fact I think Collins is an average boxer who's resume doesn't compare to dare I say it the englishmen of Eubank, Benn and Froch.

Collins would of smashed all of them. He beat Eubank twice and Benn. Froch is laughable

Smashed all of them well he didn't smash Eubank did he?
Not that I really give a damm about either of your opinions.

Ok so maybe Collins didnt "smash" Eubank. He still beat him twice. And Benn. Which proves your point wrong of
Now if Steve Collins is average...what does that make the people he beat?

Re: BRITISH SM SUPER 8/Head-to-Head
Ghosty just ignore him he's not worth it, his pro welsh no matter what gimmick is laughable at best. The sad thing is there's occasionally a valid view point in their that gets ignored by continuous gushing of everything Welsh over all else.
As for the thread I'd fancy Calzaghe to come out on top but with this type of format I'd also fancy his O to go at some point but to who could be anyones guess. As for Collins he's a bit below the rest in terms of ability but much like Froch he always made the most of what he had, something thats not always the case with a few of the others. I'd fancy Collins to come near the bottom in a league structure but he'd do so with a win or two along the way.

Re: BRITISH SM SUPER 8/Head-to-Head
More importantly Dass and Fists need both of your votes on the light heavyweights, only got 5 so far including mine.
I actually don't see Calzaghe losing to any of the fighters mentioned here, Reid and Woodhall were both beaten by him, Benn I don't think has the power at the weight while Froch, Collins and Watson aren't good enough to beat him while i'd slightly favour him over Eubank as I don't think the best of Chris is good enough to overcome him.

Re: BRITISH SM SUPER 8/Head-to-Head
I agree regarding Calzaghe based on head to head fights against any of these the majority of the time he'd walk away with the win. Its just in this type of scenario with so many hard fights back to back I'd fancy someone to upset the apple cart along the way. The problem I have is I couldn't say who would do it, I just think someone would... not much a argument I know.

This is what annoys me. I have said nothing pro Welsh at all. I stated that I would have Collins above Eubank and Benn. Thats just my opinion though. If you dont like it fine but there is nothing pro Welsh about it. Im more interested in facts. Collins beat Eubank twice. Collins beat Benn. Collins had an even record with both of them but his victories put him ahead for me and he would of beaten both of them in their prime IMO

Re: BRITISH SM SUPER 8/Head-to-Head
Moving on as no one frankly cares what you say seeing as he didn't have an even record as they are his victories of note, good bye.
I'm not sure the standard of the 7 fighters he'd be facing is high enough to cause him to have an off night- Benn, Froch and Eubank are the potentially difficult fights that if they occurred one after another may have an effect but they would more than likely be seperated by routine fights such as Reid or Woodhall.

Re: BRITISH SM SUPER 8/Head-to-Head
Is there really a need for such bickering guys? The forum is about sharing opinions and viewpoints. In many cases there is no right or wrong, just peoples opinions which arent always going to be the same.
It would be a shame to see good threads and debates spoiled by insults and unneccessary squabbling.

Re: BRITISH SM SUPER 8/Head-to-Head
I have to agree there. Steffan only said that he picks Collins to beat Eubank and Benn. So do I but I'm Irish and biased lol. Then he gets dismissed with insults. I got no beef with you Imperial Ghosty as I don't come on here that often but you're starting to come across as a bit of a bully if I'm honest from what I've read. As Lion says it's all down to opinion and no need to get personal. I got Calzaghe winning this with Carl Froch coming second and Steve coming third. I like Woodhall but he would of just made up the numbers along with Reid them pair fighting off for the wooden spoon of boxing lol.

Would there be more or less bickering if I replaced Steve Collins with Nicky Piper?

Wharton doesn't generate anywhere near the Nationalistic hysteria of an Irishman or a Welshman.

So did I, but then "taste" is such a subjective matter.
My next thread (in about five years) "The World's Most Tasteful Boxers"...bit like trying to define the "Clumsiest Piece of Cat" you ever had

Which lists mate? Have been in France up an Alp for the past 10 days - which, curiously, lacked internet access. Along with electricity and heating. Running water from a stream.

It's a pity this board lacks the ironic, tongue-in-cheek humour of the beeb boards.

I agree, I miss the BBC's faceless soulless willingness to allow comments to be made completely devoid of censure or reproach. If only this board had an Admin team with the guts to make such a bold stance.
Almost makes me miss Ben Dirs.

Re: BRITISH SM SUPER 8/Head-to-Head
Think you'll find there is plenty of tongue in cheek stuff going on, Bob, however what we don't allow is blatant and obvious wumming, or posts of an abusive/offensive/libellous nature.
All depends what you're after really, if you want the place to be rife with wums then each to their own, but I think I speak for the vast majority when I say that we want primarily a boxing forum, and if it has bits of humour to go along with it then all the better, but not at the expense of the boxing talk.
At least we explain our actions here, unlike the unseen beeb demons!
