Justin Rose
Just watching Rose, dressed all in white with a white headed Driver, have not seen him hit a fairway with it yet :albino:
Who would buy a white headed Driver??? I certainly wouldn't

Did you notice Dustin J had the same outfit on?
He may have missed the fairways but he is -3. Not bad.

As for the white driver, I'm amazed that colourful clubs have taken so long to get into the game. You can barely buy a pair of all black football boots any more let alone see a pro wearing them and with golf's rich tradition of eccentric clothing it is only fitting that expression will ow also come in the form of clubs.

Is it the new Cobra that's on the front of Today's Golfer? If so I have to say I would give it a bash I am sure when someone rocked up with the first metal wood people sneared

Both taylormade and cobra now have white headed drivers. I wonder how it looks next to a white ball?

Re: Justin Rose
Yep, TodaysGolfer did a big article on them this month. Raved about the new taylormade driver, apparently the white came about after pros said the white two ball putters showed up better in both peripheral vision and lining up straight.
Hefty price though, but I guess that's the case for all new drivers these days.

Do bridgestone do a white driver as I notice their new signing Davis Love III was using one in the Farmers?

Yes they do and as for Rose and Johnson in white, at least they look better than Big John Daley in that get-up 8)

Justin said on Twitter after his round that he was dressed all in white for the launch of the new Taylormade white-headed driver - presume the same goes for Dustin Johnson. All the manufacturers seem to be jumping on the "white" bandwagon. It's a phase - it'll go away!
Nice here, isn't it? Now perhaps we'll be able to write about Brian Gay without the mods having a heart-attack

Presumably they want to make it look different and stand out from the crowd so that those obsessed with shelling out £350 for a new 'miracle' driver every year, can at least have something a bit more showy and obviously new in their bag

Thought I would revisit an old thread at random, and see how the board's musings turned out to be total rubbish / perceptive genius...
Oldparwin: "Who would buy a white headed Driver???"
Turns out, a lot of people!
Sharrison: "I'm amazed that colourful clubs have taken so long to get into the game. Spot on sir!
But "My vote's on Poulter for the first pink one..." Good guess but didn't factor in Bubba!
Ladyputt: "All the manufacturers seem to be jumping on the "white" bandwagon. It's a phase - it'll go away!"
Too early to say, but Taylormade's newest SLDR driver is back to black. Is the white revolution over?

I like to see these old threads resurrected - not to poke fun at anyone who was painfully wrong .. just to see how opinions were and how they've changed
Can anyone find an old thread where s_r praised Tiger? (apart from that week where he had to do it for a bet)

Re: Justin Rose
Funny to see this as while I thought it was something that would catch on, I never thought I would own one! Whoops.
The funniest part of the white driver revolution is that I remember that Cobra were the first to release one with a white shaft and grip. They obviously thought that it would not be a big thing so did a very limited run of a few hundred of which Ian Poulter used one and Tweeted about it then stopped producing it.
Then TM came out with theirs and the rest is history.
Just to rub salt in the wound I remember watching Poults and Luke Donald in the final of the matchplay at Finca using white drivers and the commentators mentioning TM white drivers. Their sponsors must have loved it as Poults had his Cobra and Donald is sponsored Mizuno but is allowed to choose his driver.
I also talked to the ops director at Callaway shortly after the popularity of TM white drivers took off and was imagining that they would be really annoyed that independent tests were rating the Callaway driver higher but people saw white drivers and wanted them because of the colour. He said the thing that they were more annoyed about was that the adjustable nature of them means that you don't have to make anything like the variants and the stock levels you carry can be lower so the profits are higher.

Re: Justin Rose
TM made a 'limited edition' version of the R1 in black this summer, and it sold out very fast - faster than sales of the white headed version. Unsurprisingly the 'limited edition' isn't quite as limited as before.
I think TM's stuff is popular because it does help to straighten out errant shots. It certainly doesn't help you swing better, but if you hit it a bit straighter then that's good.
Incidentally, the whole custom fit club trend is because pros can't afford to keep stock now and manufacturers won't fund the stock for them. So you build a business out of 'custom fitting' clubs by making people believe that off the shelf clubs don't work properly.

First, I'll concede he's been a terrific golfer, but I simply cannot add any golfer as being one of the greatest sportsmen "ever". There are too many real sportsmen and women from proper sports.incontinentia wrote:Maybe in press conferences, but the things he has done on the golf course would surely rank him as one of the most phenomenal sportsmen ever.
