Serena only seeded 28th at USO
The USO chiefs have said they gave "careful consideration" to the case of Serena Williams but have decided to keep with the existing seeds. So a player with a serious chance of winning the tournament could have to play a top-four player in the third round.
If this is "careful consideration" I'd hate to see how the US buffoons would act if they gave something a "cursory look".

If she is good enough and meant to win it she will.

It is not a realistic seeding certainly, but as she has been out for the majority of the year it's not a bad one and fairer to the other competitors.

It's a fair ranking, she may be good enough as a top 20 player but she hasn't competed as much as the other girls. That means she won't get a top ranked player until atleast 3rd round

I really did not expect it, in the US. it must be a sign that many are fed up with her showing up only for slams.......

I think it shows American mentality is changing now, before they would do all they can to elevate their players ranking up in the hope it will give them 'easier' progress, now though they would rather see their players having to battle, probably something to do with the decline in their nations tennis players!

Re: Serena only seeded 28th at USO
Can see both sides of view here - that she hasn't played, that's what her ranking says; or that she is far better than her ranking and has recently proved it with a few wins over Top 10 players in the past 3 weeks.
However, as "Sportslover" comments, she has to go out and win it whatever the situation.
Will be quite amusing if she runs through the field to take the whole "shebang," especially if she does so, without losing a set.
However, without a great deal of play, if things get tight, then she is susceptible to nerves and whilst she has a tremendous amount of Major winning play behind her, she'll need to bear down, to either avoid those close and tense moments, or get through them.
It is one of the most interesting situations in terms of the women's draw, for quite a while, with probably 8 or so players that COULD take the title, some more probable than others, but nonetheless, quite a few.
Serena to make the 1/4s minimum, and probably getting to the semis - thing is, by that time, her game should be "running" quite nicely.
Also wonder if the seeding situation is in anyway, related to her "departure" of two years ago?? Whatever, 7 matches need to be won, wherever a player is, in the draw.

Re: Serena only seeded 28th at USO
Actually Josiah it's got nothing to do with less patriotism.
In order to change Serena's seeding they would have to come up with a formula that takes into account recent hardcourt performance and/or previous performances at the USO (As these are the two reasons suggesting an increase in Serena's seeding) . This formula would then have to be applied to the entire field in order to make things fair, as they can't obviously just apply it to one player.
As a result things could get rather complicated. Alternatively, they arbitrarily decide that Serena should have, say, a top 8 ranking, and then just slot her in, everyone else then moves down a seeding. Of course this would be even more unfair.
Ultimately, they had no choice but to leave her where she was. They also took into consideration that last year Cjlister's won and she was unseeded.

Sorry can't avoid it
Wimbledon seeded serena N. 8. It is a prerogative of Grand Slams to make changes to the ATP rankings when they think these don't reflect the real ranking of a player. Like is the case for Serena, for instance
