older fighters taking young guns to school. When ever an old fighter is matched with a up and coming young fighter, the general belief is that he would get blown away by the younger, stronger, quicker opponent. Boxing however is unique to other sports in that the experiance and tricks of the trade learnt over the years can be more of an advantage then physical attributes. Here are my choices of great old fighters schooling the upstart.

1) Pavlik v Hopkins
2) Marquez v "baby bull" Diaz
3) Hagler v Sibson
4) Ali v Forman

Hagler could not be defined as over the hill at the time, more in his prime. This is more of a case of an excellent fighter coming up against a legend

Rubio v Lemieux is a great shout but Martinez started boxing late. He is mid 30's but in his prime but has not had enough fights to describe him as old.

He's not as shopworn as some but he's definitely an old fighter for his weight class, although your point is valid.

Foreman vs Moorer!

I considered Forman v Moorer but he lost every round before he knocked Moorer out. Hopkins v Pascal just sums it up, great performance.

Larry Holmes v Ray Mercer. Mercer was expected to win that fight, instead he was out fought and out thought.

Thomas Hearns also did a number on Virgil Hill.

On a less extravegant scale what about Mcdermott vs Olubamiwo.... Surely Big John was just lined up to give Larry boost up the rankings but ended up blowing him away

He didn't 'take him to school' so to speak, but Duran-Barkley might be worth a shout. Duran hadn't scored a truly significant win in a while and was doomed for humiliation at the hands of Barkley, but produced his last truly great performance to win (there's some debate around the decision, but I think it was the right one).

Schmeling-Louis is a classic one. Defeats against Hamas, Sharkey and Baer seemed to spell the end for the German at the highest level, we all know what happened when he met Louis first time out.

Toney-Jirov is worth a shout, too. Not many fancied 'Lights Out' before that one, and with good reason, too. Shocked a lot of people that night, the last time he really impressed aside from the tainted Ruiz performance.

No robbery there, far too close a fight for anyone to say that - and I'd say the same had Barkley got the nod, too.

Starling-Brown is a good shout, though.

Robbery...4 rounds with one 10-8 at most and I've watched it several times..

WBC with a hispanic fighter (especially a legend) = trouble for any champ.

Well then, Barkley should have just rolled him like a drunk and taken it out of the judges' hands, shouldn't he Truss!?

McCallum against Watson fits the criterea well, although I'm certainly not suggesting that McCallum was past his best, but Watson was younger and greener, and older more experienced man slowly took him to school
