The golfers' Music Room
First topic message reminder :
Mac started a really good thread today and while I'm not as fussy about things going off topic as some people, it does seem a shame to drown out Mac's thread with music chat - so I think we'll have a music corner for us golfers (in addition to the forum-wide music section)
I know Kwini is keen on his music, often throwing musical references into his ballwasher topics (I remember one of his last efforts on the old site being entitled The Boys Are Back In Town, and the conversation going off into Thin Lizzy territory!
S_R (on the other thread) made a reference to "hating the Beatles" - discuss!

Re: The golfers' Music Room
Went to five concerts last year, artists from twenties to late seventies:
Grace Potter "opened" for a President Obama appearance so only played a five-song set - terrific.
Brandi Carlile was pretty good - glad I saw her, wouldn't see her again probably.
Sarah McLachlan played an outdoor gig and it rained - not good and show abbreviated. Would love to see her in a theatre. Fantastic voice.
Top of my bucket list, along with Neil Young, has been Bonnie Raitt and she came to town at last. 7/10 perhaps but age is catching up with her and the energy that oozes from her albums was absent.
And 78-year-old Leonard Cohen came home to Montreal and played two sell-out 15,000 ticket gigs. Played for 3 1/2 hours, just fabulous. Had seen him at the RAH forty years ago; perhaps we'll meet again in another forty years!
Regardless of my taste, isn't good live music terrific??!!

Yeah, live music can be outstanding. Haven't been to a good live show in a while ( ) although did make it to Download here (only just down the road really) in the U.K. last 'Summer' which was good, especially as they had Metallica headlining one night and Black Sabbath to close it all on the last night.
I really should expand my horizons somewhat! Truth be told though, I find I can't get away from the heavy stuff.

Bruce Hornsby playing just up the road next week but not sure I can get a ticket - one person who ALWAYS plays a great concert, should appeal to most tastes.
Keane here in a couple of weeks. Didn't they just sell out the O2? Not here, not so far anyway.
(I've always been too old for heavy metal, and I think it's going to stay that way!)

Anyone for Classic Rock then?
My last 'live do' was a Chris Rea concert in Edinburgh. Never have I seen so many guitars on stage in all me life.

I requested (and got) a CD for christmas based on a track heard on an advert.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hZCh1EHiEpY
I don't tend to listen to "new" bands much but have to say I really love the whole album.

Lumineers quite popular here Hibbz - gave a free concert here last year, supposed to be very good live, think they're on their way back. Have to get my daughter to take me!

I know nothing about them Kwinski the first I heard was the song on the advert and Wiki is rather brief. Your comment saying they're on their way back suggests you know more.

Unexpected things to come across.....
Was looking for something on YouTube and stumbled across a good acoustic cover of Metallica's "Nothing else matters":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&list=PL7C9921B527DB0DA9&v=DBQy734Q4FM
Nice, smoky vocals and some melodic guitar. They've done some other decent covers as well. Visually, pretty pleasant as well!:

I think all the ones on YouTube are from the album (I have it) Kwini. I was just wondering if you knew something about their career pre the trip to Denver.
I looked into getting tickets to their London shows but they've all already sold out months in advance.
'Tis the (Eon) power of advertising.

Re: The golfers' Music Room
Apologies in advance for the morbidness but has anyone else thought of what songs they want played at their funeral?? Not being a churchgoer I don't particularly want friends & family trudging through hymns so I've got a list of what I want, It goes like this
Being brought into the Crem....Into the Valley - The Skids
During the Service...No More Heroes - The Stranglers
Going into the furnace....I'm on my way - The Proclaimers
People exiting the Crem...Redemption Song - Joe Strummers cover of it
Hopefully it'll be a long way off though.

A friend of mine struggled with her weight most of her life. Sadly she succumbed to breast cancer whilst only in her mid-thirties.
At her funeral we walked out to the sound of Queen and 'Fat Bottomed Girls'

I am the resurrection by The Stone Roses
At 8.12 it's long enough to cover the whole gig (including the torching of my remains) thus removing the need for any speeches, it would annoy any religiousists that did turn up but mainly because I love it.

Yeah but who's?? I'd say she's plenty old enough not to need to ask her parents permission :-o. Exactly the kind of classy bird to whisk away for a weekend. She could caddie for me or lounge around in the spa until I was finished my round, the choice would be hers.

Good research Navy
Yeah listening to it with eyes closed is not quite the same, it must be her in the video that makes it somehow sound better!!
Was a big fan of their first 2 albums then kind of grew out of them, I remember seeing them at the Millenium stadium supported by Feeder and I actually thought Feeder were the better live band.

I like their first couple of albums as well and then they got a bit 'commercial' - still OK but lost that raw edge that I liked.

Re: The golfers' Music Room
OK I'll throw one in .. though my own particular favourite type of music at the moment is pretty much a niche market and probably won't interest many, if any, here
Prog Rock .. long sneered at by the musical masses is having a bit of a resurgence - not the old stuff like Pink Floyd, King Crimson, ELP etc but the new breed
Bands like Dream Theater (not exactly new but becoming more marked in public awareness these days), Transatlantic, Neal Morse etc
Neal Morse is prolific, release both solo albums and collaborations (usually with Mike Portnoy ex-Dream Theater) - Morse released an album late last year called Momentum which is stunning and there is a live DVD of the Momentum tour due soon. Then there is a new Spock's Beard album out soon - and the Morse/Portnoy touring band are supporting Flower Kings on a European tour right now, fueling speculation of another Transatlantic album (Roine Stoltz of Flower Kings was another member of Transatlantic with Mores/Portnoy and a guy from Marillion)
For something a little more mainstream but featuring the same guys, I recently finally got hold of a CD I've been trying to get for years - Yellow Matter Custard live in New York. As the name suggests YMC are a Beatles tribute band, but again featuring Morse and Portnoy - fantastic covers of some of the greatest Beatles songs and they also bring out lesser known songs rather than just the "hits". The live album is pretty rough and ready, sounding as if a lot of it was jammed rather than heavily rehearsed, but to hear such talented musicians performing those Beatles classics is brilliant
Check out YouTube for YMC's version of "Oh Darling" .. absolutely STUNNING vocal performance from Neal Morse

Hey Davie. Some food for though with the music I see! Never heard of YMC but having looked at that YouTube of 'Oh darling", interesting to see YMC includes Paul Gilbert and Matt Bissonnette who I've seen with Mr. Big and Joe Satriani - both pretty damn good musicians. Either way, looks a fun act to be part of.
Like a bit of prog but don't know anything significant post-Marillion and even then, I never liked the post-Fish version of Marillion.

To my mind that guys that took prog rock forward a bit from ELP, Floyd etc (still not modern per se) are It Bites - especially the albums Once Around the World and Eat Me in St Louis.

Re: The golfers' Music Room
@NBS - interesting you should mention the "other two" in YMC - both names I knew with good pedigree yes Neal Morse and Mike Portnoy are the two stars for me
Kwini - I don't think there is a lot to check out with YMC apart from YouTube and a CD of that show - all the guys are well respected in their own fields (those fields all being quite heavy rock or prog metal which isn't everyone's taste) - but the two guys I mention are not only fantastically talented musicians but both have a real love of Beatles and other 60s rock
Portnoy and Morse have also done a couple of great covers albums including songs like Lido Shuffle, and covering artists like Jethro Tull, The Police, Bee Gees and even the Osmonds! And I think I've heard you say you are a fan of Neil Young - there is a great medley of Neil Young songs to be found if you search hard enough

On the morbid theme we did nine today and noticed the cherry tree we planted three years ago when an old friend died(ashes under)looks pretty dead itself hope nature comes to the rescue. Its on the 18th roughly where he used to mishit his drives to(from the 9th)! Ever so slightly depressing when the course is littered with trees and benched with memorial plaques.I may well go for ashes on the 18th green be nice to hit the green for once.

Unique singer who managed to put his own very distinct spin on everything he did, including playing the guitar.
I had almost forgotten him, it had completely slipped past me the huge part he played at Woodstock. Sadly it took his death to reawaken my interest in his music.

Before it gets too much "I remember when it was all green fields around here" ..
No doubt the environment for popular music has changed dramatically in the last 20 years, but that's not to say there are currently no young talented musicians and singer songwriters that have a chance to be remembered. Some of them very much have their own style too - John Mayer and Newton Faulkner to name two. Hindsight has rose tinted vision - I'm sure there was plenty of dross in the "charts" back in 69 too

Did anyone see the documentary about Bill Withers on BBC 4? Think it was called Still Bill. Only really knew him from Lovely Day (again and again...) but have subsequently bought a couple of albums, seemed a lovely man and a great musician. Very rarely does anything put a lump in my throat, but his humility and talent really was humbling.

Not sure you could lean on Ginger Baker, but did you see this?

Saw Ginger Baker in a club in Portsmouth almost fifty years ago - wild and crazy then, apparently wilder and crazier now. Not a sympathetic figure . . . . .

I went to see Bruce Springsteen on Tuesday. He was at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. Good mix of old and new - and a fair bit of audience participation. He was on stage for three and a half hours with only a five minute break. Excellent night out.

Does anyone offer better value in a live show? Not in my experience.
