The golfers' Music Room
First topic message reminder :
Mac started a really good thread today and while I'm not as fussy about things going off topic as some people, it does seem a shame to drown out Mac's thread with music chat - so I think we'll have a music corner for us golfers (in addition to the forum-wide music section)
I know Kwini is keen on his music, often throwing musical references into his ballwasher topics (I remember one of his last efforts on the old site being entitled The Boys Are Back In Town, and the conversation going off into Thin Lizzy territory!
S_R (on the other thread) made a reference to "hating the Beatles" - discuss!

Re: The golfers' Music Room
Yes Mac, I'd throw in the new testament too, If I lived at the time they were written, there's a pretty good chance you and I wouldn't object, but morality and the usage of words change over time according to changes in society. What is acceptable at one time, might no longer acceptable today.
I presume as a young fan of Dire Straits you, or your dad weren't abhorred by the word used at the time, yet because we've changed as a society and what we consider acceptable, you are now.
Well done, you've just made my point for me.
The fact that versions of the song have been released which no longer have that couple of lines in it is testament to the fact that it was found to be unacceptable and they corrected it.
Now, stop being such a bell end.

I wouldn't count myself as a fan of dire straits. Would that change the argument anyway?
I am unfortunately pretty sure my dad isn't they type to care about a bit of "minor" gay bashing.

Yet, you admitted to singing along to money for nothing as a kid, but now your attitudes have changed.
You can't really blame someone for writing something in the past in a language acceptable for that time, however if they persist in using that language now when attitudes have changed then you can.
The lyrics have been changed to meet modern attitudes, so what's your point?
Your comparison to the bible was stupid, because that's still an immoral, hateful, bigoted, intolerant book of lies and hasn't been changed.

You should listen to Slayer super, scathingly anti-religious lyrics.

Surely the point about the lyrics is that the 'faggot' is very successful, whereas the bitter electrical store employee is not?

I admitted to listening to it, not singing along. Bloody hell, could someone actually read a post for once?
Plus I listened to it in the late 90's, the lyrics may have already been changed.

Re: The golfers' Music Room
Re. Money For Nothing. As Knoffler pointed out, all the controversy shows is there are dumb gay people as well as dumb straight people. Given Knoffler's stance on other issues (Apartheid/Mandela, for example), I seriously doubt if he wrote lyrics to be deliberately offensive to gay people. People see the headline words and haven't got the nerve cells to think a bit deeper about the words. Pretty typical and hardly surprising.

If people can't see the irony in that song it's pretty sad.

I must be a bit odd - I don't think I've ever consciously heard anything by Sheeran. I'll have to at least have a listen I guess.

Re: The golfers' Music Room
He's got talent to be fair to him. Good lyrics, nice flow on tracks. Still pretty young. Worthy of a listen and you get a nice sense of it's him rather than writers, producers and labels pushing him one way or another. His recent Timberlake-esqe sound isn't my cup of tea though but certainly his + album is a good effort (despite being ubiquitous for a time a while ago).

Sheeran's support act was a young guy called Saint Raymond (stage name obviously) who is also defnitely worth a listen

Bloody Hell, Ian McLagan dead.
Life expectancy in the Small Faces, Faces not all it might have been.
You don't hear their music much in the States, so curious that McLagan has lived most of his adult life in Austin, TX.
He was interviewed on local radio here just a couple of months ago - you hear all that enthusiasm for latest projects and it gets snuffed out just like that. Stroke.
Not many recent departures from the 60's/70's British bands, thank goodness; hope they don't come in bunches.

Sorry Kwini - came to this late.
Mac will be forever remembered by me because of his counterpoint organ work on the finest pop record ever made - 'Stay with me'!
There is only Kenny Jones left of the lineup that I really remember.
As always, we will probably be talking about someone else of our generation that has slipped away soon!

Too true shanker.
If you get the chance to listen to it, here's a wonderful interview with Ian Mac from the National Public Radio archives (2004):
http://www.npr.org/2014/12/05/368737174/fresh-air-remembers-british-rock-keyboardist-ian-mclagan
Quite clear that the interviewer hadn't done the required homework, but very entertaining and absorbing nevertheless.
All the best . . . .

Joe Cocker worked at it for most of his life and now he's moved on.
Up where he belongs?
Or guilty of squandering a great talent, presumably with a little help from his friends?

Can't remember who said it (Albert Lee?) but "Some of the best notes were the ones BB King didn't play". Fantastic and restrained guitarist, and without him, many of the guitarists and bands I follow would never have existed.

Some of these flies were great live as well as on vinyl, had front-row seats for BB once, memorable experience.
Different genre obviously, but Ben E.King driftered off into the sunset recently, another great.
Was also a huge Joni Mitchell fan, but sounds like she's in a terrible state. Having said which, I suppose I am too!
s_r, What was the true story about Bono's bike accident? Were you driving a truck which ran him down?

Re: The golfers' Music Room
Anyone go to any outstanding concerts this year? Anything new??
I drew just about a complete blank for about the first time ever.
Geriatric performances from Leo Kottke (never again Leo) and Mavis Staples (she needed an oxygen tent just to get through her set), but Win Butler came to the Mavis Staples gig and she dragged him up on stage which was kinda fun. Otherwise, nuffink.
Meanwhile, don't you agree that "Hello, it's me" are the three most depressing words in radio's current English language?

Re: The golfers' Music Room
The only gig I went to this year was losing my festival virginity at the Ramblin' Man festival in Maidstone
Though I've been to 100s of gigs over the years I've really never fancied the festival experience and even when I saw the Saturday lineup for this festival (featuring two of my all time favourite bands) I only thought "oh I'd like to see that" rather than "I've got to be there"
It was only when my daughter saw the lineup and spotted the two bands that she said "Dad, why aren't you going?" ... I told her I didn't like festivals and anyway had no one to go with (despite a few internet music friends I knew were going). She checked her diary and when she found she wasn't working on the Saturday offered to go with me
So glad she did! The festival was made up of two main stages (the 1st stage primarily for classic rock bands) and the 2nd more progressive orientated. Also there was an indoor stage in a large circus big top that featured smaller, more intimate sets with a more blues-rock theme.
Anyway I spent most of the day watching the main stage, with Toseland (an ex motorcycle GP rider apparently though I'd never heard of him - very good!) ... FM, Saxon, Blue Oyster Cult, Dream Theater and headliners, the Scorpions.
The "prog" stage featured Marillion, Ian Anderson and Touchstone amongst others and the tent had Bernie Marsden, Hayseed Dixie and some other bands I was unfamiliar with.
Highlight for me though was Blue Oyster Cult. They had been the first "proper" gig I ever went to back in '78 I think and though I saw them again in '82(?) I hadn't seen them since then - but they had always featured in my favourite top 3 bands of all time. I was actually a little wary, worried that they'd be a disappointment after all those years, and somehow mar the great memories I had of them - but no such thing; they were amazing and could easily have played for twice as long as they did.
The lineup for next year has just been announced and I won't be bothering. Not a patch on last year!

James Toseland is I think now married to Katie Melua - very talented if dreary catalogue. He is reckoned to be a very good pianist/keyboard player. Must be one of the best crossover stories - pro motorcycling to music festival performer?

Interesting choices, Davie,
Good for your young lady for dragging you along. Have certainly enjoyed the shows my daughter has taken me to - music bridges a lot of gaps.
No festivals for me for a generation, but used to go to the Newport Jazz Festival every year a decade or three ago - memorable in every way.

Just the one gig for me this year but it wasn't a bad line up...Johnny Marr, The Kaiser Chiefs, Paul Weller and the Who. Always wanted to see the Who but left with the feeling that I should have made the effort several years ago, so many good songs but Daltreys voice aint what it was. Weller and the Kaiser chiefs made it all worthwhile though.

Davie, that's a nice story that your daughter took you to a concert YOU wanted to see. She's making up for all the things you've done for her.
I'm at the stage where I don't get to choose any more. Last gig was a birthday treat for my daughter: Taylor Swift. I haven't got any bad blood though, she's surprisingly good live. I'm not saying she's better than my wildest dreams, but she certainly has style.
