The golfers' Music Room
First topic message reminder :
Mac started a really good thread today and while I'm not as fussy about things going off topic as some people, it does seem a shame to drown out Mac's thread with music chat - so I think we'll have a music corner for us golfers (in addition to the forum-wide music section)
I know Kwini is keen on his music, often throwing musical references into his ballwasher topics (I remember one of his last efforts on the old site being entitled The Boys Are Back In Town, and the conversation going off into Thin Lizzy territory!
S_R (on the other thread) made a reference to "hating the Beatles" - discuss!

Really? They were at the peak of their powers? Seriously?? At least I credited them with being rock stars at one point...

Re: The golfers' Music Room
Well word has it that Bowie's new album was due to be his highest charting album even before his death and has since gone on to become his only Biilboard number 1 album. Sure a lot of that will be down to the aftermath of his death but not all.
How do you measure "peak of powers" - record sales are a pretty poor indicator these days. Motorhead were still touring, Glen Frey had admittedly been rather quiet but that was due to his illness - is that fading? Is it cause or effect?
To put it into context, if Nicklaus, Palmer or Player were to pass away would you describe them as faded? Of course they are long past the peak of THEIR powers - but would be fairly disrespectful I think

Of course they are faded. Palmer is already a coffin dodger.

You can check out but you can never leave.
Saw him (and them) live a couple of years ago just for the nostalgia but came away enthused and awed by them all over again.

Re: The golfers' Music Room
Bowie's arguably the only one who was on a relative 'up' (from a lowish, by his standards, base). It's not disrespectful to say their best days were behind them. Touring isn't a great metric either - Rod Stewart and the Rolling Stones are still touring but I don't think anyone agrees that they're at their peak - neither have written anything significant in decades. Greats, yes. At the peak of their powers, no. Same applied to Frey, Lemmy etc. Of course I'd describe Palmer etc as 'faded' if they were to die tomorrow. By the standards of their peak, they're 'faded', by definition. Doesn't mean I respect their playing achievements any less though...Davie wrote:Well word has it that Bowie's new album was due to be his highest charting album even before his death and has since gone on to become his only Biilboard number 1 album. Re: The golfers' Music Room
Is it sacrilegious to feel that there's a wider gap/gulf between the best Eagles stuff and some really dull rubbish that might have great harmonies but precious little else.
So much good stuff but so much that reminds me why I didn't used to play the Eagles albums I had.
Never saw them live, but that's a big miss.

It can get a lot more sacrilegious Kwini, I think the Eagles are a bit kitsch.

Sorry, but ~150 million albums worldwide allows The Eagles to say "**** off" . Some of their stuff was a bit too country for me but other than that, pretty good.

What's the bus equivalent of mondeo man?
There's such a wide range of Eagles, and Eagles related, stuff that it's naively dismissive to place it all under one kitsch umbrella.

Purchased an expensive ticket to see Bruce Springsteen at Wembley in June. Didn't really have much choice on the TicketMaster website. He is doing a tour based on The River album. This was the first album I bought of his work so it will be good to hear. Seen him several times since and he does do a good performance.

Enjoy the BOSS! Tough not to, though The River isn't my favourite. Can't imagine anyone giving better value at a concert.
Did a father/daughter date with my 28-y-o a couple of weeks ago to see Josh Ritter - all pretty lightweight stuff, but his enthusiasm for what he's doing and the fun he's having is infectious.

I feel a beer coming on in June ;-) I got tickets for the Wembley gig as well, like you the River was the first Springsteen album I bought, never actually got round to seeing him live until Hyde Park in 2009. I think it's astonishing the level of performance he puts in during a live gig for a man in his mid 60's

For a layman, the best thing about St.George was his extraordinary ability to express himself in an absolute minimum number of words, as if he'd been playing "Just A Minute" for a lifetime.

My Uncle ( my mums sisters husband) was a music conductor, who pased away some years ago. I recall that I sat behind George Martin at his funeral. When i was a kid, i had very little interest in orchestral music, and you look back, and wish you had shown a lot more interest in what he was doing and especially what he had done in the past. I remember gold discs and a letter from Jimmy Carter ( not the ex arsenal winger) on the wall of his house.

Prince Rogers Nelson - RIP. A showman right up there with the Jaggers, Mercurys, and Hendrixes. One of the most talented musicians I have ever had the honour of seeing on stage

Here, here. Heard Purple Rain on the radio but Let's Go Crazy is very poignant tonight.

Never a huge fan of his music for all I appreciate what a musical polymath he was. Someone once said he could have been Hendrix or Jackson and ended up neither.

Not sure WTF super means by "women's music" but always thought prince did slightly naff music. Don't get the fuss over the likes of purple rain, cheesy and naff.
But Davie thinks I talk Love sacks anyone so no harm done in expressing that.

Mac, I meant that to me the sound of the music appears more appealing to women than men in the same way that women are more likely to listen to girl bands and similar pap. It's that sort of schmaltzy, quasi-r'n'b drivel that doesn't appeal to me.

I'm not a big fan of Prince, but he was incredibly talented as a musician and a songwriter. The wife played his best of the other day, its not schmaltzy quasi rnb drivel in any way. It is though very 80s, and I dont think its dated terribly well.

Of course you are entitled to an opinion, but when it becomes rather insulting then I feel it needs addressing.
If you look at the sheer numbers of quality performers who expressed their feelings about his death and how influential he was to so many current musicians, then if rather makes your opinion seem ill informed.
"Girl Bands", "pap" and "schmaltzy, quasi-r'n'b drivel" may well be your opinion, but it would appear you are grossly outnumbered in that "opinion". Prince has so many sides to him that if you think he was only schmaltzy, quasi-r'n'b drivel you probably don't know enough about him to make comment. Sometimes, an opinion is best kept to ones-self

Davie/super/ben
Drop the crud about being women's music and supers "schmaltzy, quasi R&B drivel" seems like a perfect description of princes music.
Also, not sure how well known it is but he was Jehovah's Witnesses and anti LGBTQ. I wonder if his science denialism resulted in his early death?

Why drop the "women's music" Mac? Pretty sure the demographic split of his "fans" would be more than 51% female.

Agree entirely. I don't like his stuff (that I've heard) but boy was he good at it.
Wrote, sang, played all the instruments and produced his debut album I believe. Ballsy.

Well given I don't understand the logic behind your assertion that his fans would be majority female, it's a little hard to give counter examples. What exactly makes it "women's music" in your opinion? You want something more testosterone-fueled?
Perhaps your assertion is that only women like "pop" music?

I didn't assert it, I said "to me" that his music is more appreciated by females than males, very clearly stating that it is an opinion, than a statement of fact.
I haven't heard anything of his music which changes that "opinion". If the dreary Purple Rain is the best thing he has, I can't see my opinion being changed.
Perhaps some song titles which haven't made the mainstream, or which don't fall into his typical "genre" might be a good start.

Are you basing your description of his music on the songs you know? As far as I understand he released Jazz songs, and plenty of Funk especially early on. I really do not think he can be pigeon holed into one type of music.
