Steed Malbranque quits football
Former Tottenham, Fulham and Sunderland midfielder Steed Malbranque has quit football to spend more time with his son who has been diagnosed with cancer.
Malbranque made the announcement just weeks after signing a two-year deal with French Ligue 1 side St Etienne after leaving the Black Cats earlier this summer.
The former France Under 21 international has made just one appearance, as a substitute, for St Etienne and was left out of the squad by coach Christophe Galtier for the clash with Sochaux last weekend.
It is believed Malbranque has now quit the game for good, bringing to an end a successful career which started at Lyon before moving to England.
He joined west London club Fulham in 2001 where he remained for five years before heading across the capital to Tottenham.
He won the league Cup in 2008 before heading north to Sunderland where he made 11 appearances before being told by Steve Bruce that he was surplus to requirements and was allowed to leave the Stadium of Light to join St Etienne.
I hope he has a happy retirement and that he's son gets better

A Footballer who puts family over money, fair play to him. Tons of respect for him and wish his son a speedy recovery.
Re: Steed Malbranque quits football
I've always thought that Steed Malbranque was an underrated player, he was one of Fulham's best players in their early Premier League players and has played consistently well at this high level.
Fair play that he has made that decision, and I wish his son all the best.

Great decision by Malbranque to put family ahead of himself and his career. I wish him and his son well in the coming months and hope they get to have many more together

Dan Walker of the BBC has just tweeted to say that the story is made up and its all a lie.
Re: Steed Malbranque quits football
Steed Malbranque's representatives have dismissed reports the former Fulham, Tottenham and Sunderland midfielder has retired from football to care for an ill family member.
Reports emerging from France over the weekend, and repeated in a number of British publications, claimed that the 31-year-old, who joined French outfit St Etienne this summer, had decided to quit as his young son was suffering from cancer.
But in a statement released to Press Association Sport by solicitors working on the instruction of Malbranque's agent, Sebastien Boisseau, it is made clear that the Frenchman does not have a son and that no member of his immediate family is in ill health. "Steed has read with concern the recent stories currently circulating about him and his family," read the statement which as issued by London-based solicitors Thomas Cooper.
"He would like to reassure all of his friends in England and throughout world football that these stories are wholly without foundation.
"Steed does not have a son and his immediate family are all in good health. Steed does not know the origin of these stories but would like to stress that they are without merit.
"He trusts that they will now cease immediately."
Malbranque's switch to St Etienne last month ended a 10-year stay in English football, during which time he made a total of 336 Premier League appearances.
After impressing at Lyon following his debut for the club in 1998, Malbranque secured a move to Fulham in 2001 and went on to make over 200 appearances for the west London club.
Malbranque transferred to Tottenham in the summer of 2006, going on to make over 60 appearances, before joining Sunderland in 2008.

Round of applause for the Daily Fail on this one.
You'd think they'd check to see that he had a son, when that is the cornerstone of the story...

The Daily Fail proving yet again why it should be read by no-one. What a horrible rumour to make up.

The plot thickens. He has now had his contract with St Etienne cancelled by mutual consent.
