true Gregers, Praveen has been very good, but once he had an off-day today India were in real trouble. Also think Dhoni got his fields badly wrong today (though not easy when your bowlers don't bowl to them anyway).

IMO India need to
a) pick five bowlers; relying on Kohli and Raina to chip in isn't going to cut it, and if one of their bowlers gets smacked (hardly uncommon so far) then they're in real trouble.
b) pick the young quick Aaron (spelling?), as they really need a bit of pace in that attack (120kph avergae was Patel today, that's just never going to cut it at this level when you're also pretty much gun-barrel straight), and he can hardly do any worse anyway

Solid enough win in the end.

It all went a bit flat but that's because Eng knew they could just get there without taking risks after the first 10.

I think India batted well but Eng managed to get off to a good start and then cruise home even without the big hitters. India could have used a better strike bowler.

Sad to see the ground half empty at the end and the English crowd silent (they need to learn to cheer). The India followers are much noiser fans but didn't stick around so most weren't there to applaud Engs win come the end.

Great batting from Kieswetter and Cook.

Well done England, solid batting display, and an honorary mention to James Anderson, who was incredibly economical amongst the carnage.

surprised Anderson only bowled three overs. Swann did a very good job too. Dhoni says that India will carry on with the four bowlers tactics, saying that they need the extra batsman as all their batsmen are attacking players, doesn't seem to have worked out that India's bowling has blearly been the weakness in the T20 and today...

Cook says that this was the best wicket he's batted on for a long time. Theyre not going to replace Morgan. He's MOM of course, lovely little innings he played there.

Gotta feel for Stokes, they make him play despite having a broken finger because they are desperate to see him bat in exactly this kind of game...then he doesnt get to bat.

Aside from that this is turning ion to a hell of a run for England in all formats. Sure they havent been erntirely convincing at times against the India reserve XI but 9 wins and a no result from their last 10 games (4 tests, one T20 and 5 ODIs) has to be one of their best runs ever. All summer they have only lost 2 ODIs vs Sri Lanka, unbeaten in tests and T20's.

Jesus, just reading through the thread and some of the knee-jerking when India were batting is unbearable. Ever heard of waiting till both teams bat to get a look in at conditions?

agreed, i know hindsight is easy but all this "England have no chance" rubbish was astonishing reading it this morning. The pitch looked a belter from ball one and although India were probably favourites at half time England were never out of this game.

Guys i think you have to ignore the silly posts and take it as an avoidable but traditional part of these match threads. :-)

I caught the latter part of the game and it was later :-D by the time they wrapped it up.

Delighted and surprised that the game went ahead with good attendance - well done ckt fans Also that the england run chase was very good plus Cooks transformation to 1 day fast scoring batsmen is excellent and a pleasure to see.

Woakes is a better bowler in the longer form of the game, I would imagine it won't be long before he gets a chance for a test chance.

Only problem for Woakes is that there is a long queue ahead of him. Anderson, Broad, Bresnan, Tremlett and Onions at least. His batting is in his favour I suppose.

Since being made full-time ODI captain, Alistair Cook has made 382 runs in 381 balls spanning 7 innings (2 not outs), giving him an average of 76.40 and a strike rate of 100.26, which is brilliant for an opener. As a comparison, Kieswetter has an average of 42.66 with a strike rate of 100.39 over this period. Also very good, but less runs at almost the exact same pace as Cook.

This vindicates the selector's decision to give him the captaincy, but I don't see why he couldn't have been doing this in the World Cup, especially after Kevin Pietersen went home. It will be interesting to see how Cook goes in the sub-continent, especially in the One-Day format. Although it seems they have the right man at the top of the order and with the captaincy now, you have to question why he hasn't been in the One Day squad before.

And a quick question, when was the decision to drop Trott made? Was he always going to sit this one out, or was it when the match was reduced to 23 overs a side?

some people said that its a suprise that jimmy only bowled 3 overs, i dont agree. The game was virtually a 20 over game, and jimmy dosent play 20-20 for england, so for him to get them 3 overs away for only 11 plus a wicket, i think was a bonus.

the indians arent helped by the sheer number of injuries they have suffered on this tour.

Funny because up till England came and blasted them off the park the comemntators were saying many of the injuries may have been a blessing because it enabled them to pick players who wanted to play, who were capable of running between the wickets, and players who had some idea why they were standing around on a grassy field watching the other team bat even occasionaly realising they might want to make an effort to stop the ball that was flying past them.
Sehwag was in rank form, of the missing bowlers only Khan is a loss.

England are missing their best two ODI batsmen and lost Swann for the first game. Also a couple of injuries to reserve bowlers and Stokes playing with a broken finger.
I agree that the injury issue hasnt helped India and guys like Tendulkar (even if he didnt want to be here), Yuvi (even out of sorts) and Khan are irreplaceable but its possible to veregg the injuries pudding.

England across all formats are on a high.

We've seen the huge depth to their batting on this tour but also that they lack the same level of bowling resources.
