According to the planet rugby poll it'll be Hosea Gear
But I'd agree Ioane will probably score a lot, he's probably the favourite

I've got £10 on Manu Tuilagi at 80-1. A long shot, but good odds I think. Hope MJ will give him plenty of game time in the pool stages to get him settled before the knockouts! Come on England!!!!!!

I wouldn't look past a New zealander, any of their players can rack up 4 tries per match in the pool stages..

Only problem with betting on them is that you never know who's going to start. I might have a cheeky 5ver on Vinny Clarke.

Re: Who will be top try scorer in the world cup?
I'd go for Nonu or Beale. NZ has an easier pool than some.
I think NZ will put a large score on Tonga as they're pretty focused and after two losses getting that part of the ledger right is the first of several little goals.
Larsen is hoping for something 'special' from the opening game (saying he hopes it comes from the AB's!) in the JK try against Italy mode.

Re: Who will be top try scorer in the world cup?
Maybe Vincent Clerc or George North, depending on how far Wales go. Mils Muliena is likely to start most of NZ's games and knows were the try line is.
Brian O'Driscoll has been getting on the scoresheet pretty regularly this season and will want to have a big tournament in his last WC.
Edit: Sean O'Brien is another possibility.

Guys if you decide to put on a bet, can you do so through the links on the betting page. You will most probably get a new introductory offer and it will help the forum in the long run, as we might get some money to advertise elsewhere for new members etc.

Read a theory that Mils is being rested to see how Dagg goes but also to give Richie and Mils (he´d play in the Japan game and Richie be rested) the chance for both of them to walk out in the France game with their 100th tests. As if we needed more motivation.
I like Nonu ´s chances for NZ. He´s in good form at the moment with Conrad Smith. But I agree that against a weak pool team, some winger is going to have a field day. Marc Ellis scored six tries against Japan in 1995 so anything is possible but Japan are much stronger this time round. Ioane is a good shout for Oz. Can´t see it coming from England as they have tough slugfests in store with Scotland and Argentina. I think it´ll be from a team that can dominate smaller opponents and who will go far in the tournament. Please let it be Nonu!

Re: Who will be top try scorer in the world cup?
Nothing wrong with being traditional mate. I like the idea too. I was just being facetious with 2007 quarter final exit being more than enough motivation. Seems a good idea to me to bring out the best in Mils who hasn´t hit the form of last year by giving Dagg a go. See how the young kid deals with pressure to perform and for that to rub off on Mils who lacks the x-factor of Dagg but who can be a lethal finisher as he showed last year.
100 games for Richie with all his injuries and body bruising over the years. It´s a great achievement.

Re: Who will be top try scorer in the world cup?
The leading try scorer is going to be:
Matt Banahan
Really I'm only being half facetious - I can see England playing a largely second string side against Romania and perhaps Georgia, and still winning by a cricket score. Bananaman should be playing these games, and one thing he has proven is that he is good at scoring against poor quality opposition. As such it's possible he'll score 5 or 6 tries in these matches, so could be well up the list.
You can of course make a similar statement about reserve wingers for the ABs for the Canada and Japan games and for Australia against Russia and the USA, so really it's tough to call.

How the flip does Mark Cueto get odds of 35/1?!! 350/1 would have been more realistic!

Good to see you have a sense of humour. I bet neither will even be Englands top try scorers. Interesting to see how Ashtons knee surgery will affect his pace which is his biggest asset. I tip Ashton to score 3 tries max and none in knock out stages. I tip Banahan to score 1 max. Foden is Englands danger man.

Re: Who will be top try scorer in the world cup?
Who will top forward try scorer be? I won a lot of TAB money betting on Kees Meuws the super sub to score a try. Woodcock for the ABs has an eye for the try line, as do Read and McCaw but they have injury or form concerns.
It´s either a pacey fetcher running support or a front row prop useful at burrowing over from close. Don´t see a lock being top forward try scorer or an imposing enough number 8 in good form in a good side to top the charts.

I wouldn't pick a Kiwi. Too much rotation likely in the group stages. Ioane is a good shout.

SA have a tough group so I can't see them scoring loads of tries so I'd be surprised if Fourie came out on top. I wouldn't be surprised if there is a French man near the top, someone perhaps unexpected like heymans or Rougerie.

Re: Who will be top try scorer in the world cup?
Id have thought Clerc will be there or thereabouts for the french.
I know what you mean about S.Africa, but I think there'll be plenty of tries in that group. Namibia are usually slaughtered in world cups and fourie seems as likely as anyone in the south african back division to get across the line. As with fiji/samoa not exactly known for their organised defence, ferocious tackling yes, but not necessarily smart defence.
as with anything on this forum, its all hairstyles and little tickles in my liver thats giving me these predictions

I thought the Samoan defense looked rather well organised the last couple of times I saw them. Fiji were shredded by a very off-key NZ and shouldn't realistically pose a threat to anyone. Score wise.

Why not Leinsterbaby?
Bana's is always up in the top three try scorers in the AP, so he knows where the try line is, plus his match to try ratio in an England shirt isn't bad.
Maybe you just don't like the guy? but his a good ouside bet.

Can't help but think it will be one of the Aussie back division. Perhaps JOC if he gets his shot and sorts out his sleeping pattern.

I think Delon Armitage may be a dark horse for the top scorer in the England team. He will probably play a lot of games, he seems to be in form and very hungry. Hopefully he'll bag a few this weekend and keep Cueto out FOREVER!!!

I think he get 2 or 3 against this weak opposition in each game.
As long as all the defenders are much smaller than Shane Williams, you might be right, but put him up against anyone larger than an under16 player and he tends to get bullied.

I think he get 2 or 3 against this weak opposition in each game.
As long as all the defenders are much smaller than Shane Williams, you might be right, but put him up against anyone larger than an under16 player and he tends to get bullied.

Re: Who will be top try scorer in the world cup?
I think banahan will get one or two but not against an organized defense, I still can't believe he didn't throw a hand off at Shane but nevermind. I couldn't stop myself putting a few quid on Tuilagi to be in top 4 and Ashton. His support running against teams like Romania or Georgia will end with tries. Look at his 4 tries against Italy in this years 6 nations. I reckon he can get in the top 4 if he starts against those teams

Alesana Tuilagi could be a bit of a dark horse to get a fair amount of tries in the world cup, he's been in good try scoring form over the past season and bagged one against Oz aswell.

That can't be right. That can't be right at all.
I was going to say an Aussie back would be top scorer. Maybe Beale or Ioane. But, thinking about their group, I don't think they'll have any games that will be cricket scores.
NZ should hammer Japan and Canada, so you'd think Nonu, Jane, Dagg are all in with a shot. Depends how much consistency of selection they have.
If I was to put money on, however, Banahan at 66/1 looks better than backing a kiwi who may get rotated out at 8/1 - 16/1. Especially when you consider that he may come on against Argentina and has quite a handy record against them.
