UFC main events to become 5 rounders
whats does everyone think of this? didnt realise this had even happened until the brock v reem fight had been annouced over 5 rounds. im not to sure its that great.
all the great fights are not going to last 5 rounds anyway and they will just prolong the really boring rubbish fights by another two rounds. the one good thing is that usually the better fighter will win over 5 rounds and will stop fighters just nicking a couple of rounds and winning. shouldnt be to many bad judging decisions over 5

The first non title 5 rounder is actually taking place between Leben and Munoz at UFC 138 in Birmingham! I think there would be more stoppages - if JDS had 5 rounds with Carwin or Nelson they wouldn't have gone the distance. So maybe 5 rounds isn't a bad thing. However so many title fights don't even go the distance - look at Valesquez's record or Silva's. The more explosive strikers don't need 5 rounds.
But there is the danger that there will be less exciting fights as fighters 'pace' themselves or try and fight for points rather than stoppages by trying to win the majority of rounds. I guess we'll have to wait and see!

silva's a strange one to use as on one hand he has the griffins, okamis and belforts he's also had the maia's, leites and sonnens. maia and leites being two of the worse title fights ive seen. thats what im worried about with 3 round fights it doesnt matter with fights like the first three but your just extending the ones that arent going anywhere, something like kos v daley theres really no point as all you have got is one fighter lying on top of another for another two rounds
another point i didnt mention which you partly alluded to is the heavier weights, going to show some fighters up big time in there cardio. while JDS was battering nelson for majority of fight he had gassed from punching him so much, another two rounds and they were more than likely to start hugging as nothing left, not a great advertisment for the ufc

So you’re saying Edgar Vs. Mayner II was a boring 5 round fight?! There have been plenty of thrilling 5 round fights and I for one am looking forward to all main event fights being 5 rounds. I think it is a good idea and completely agree that there should be less bad judging decisions over 5 rounds.
All that being said you really can’t beat a good old fashioned KO and you don’t need 5 rounds for that!

gibbo- thought edgar v maynard was a good fight not great, and had maynard winning easily which goes against the 5 rounds helping judging (but do agree that it should help overall)
