England vs India, 5th ODI Debate
So the 5th ODI between India and England is underway, the last act in a terrible summer tour for India, and an opportunity to win at least 1 international match.
A win for England would be a nice way to cap off a wonderful summer.
India have their regular quota of injury yet again, and this time, its their best bowler Praveen Kumar. R Vinay Kumar, and not Varun Aaron takes his place in the XI.
For England, Jimmy Anderson is getting a much deserved rest, and Jade Dernbach gets another game. Johnny Bairstow, the impressive young wicket keeper batsman from Yorks, is in pllace of Ben Stokes, and Samit Patel is getting another game.
The weather has already resulted in a delaied start, and further trouble can be expected.
Your thoughts?

Re: England vs India, 5th ODI Debate
Interesting they chose Bairstow to replace Stokes. They called up Buttler aswell, which implies that they weren't sure who they were going to go with out of those two. Haven't seen much of Bairstow, but I would have gone with Buttler. His List A stats are ridiculous. Played 28 games now, averaging nigh on 70, with a s/r of 145!

Buttler sure is a good talent. Seems they have so much young talent they don't know what to do with it.

Re: England vs India, 5th ODI Debate
Taylor is averaging 50 in List A cricket, and who scored two hundred for the Lions in three games against Sri Lanka A cannot get near the ODI squad. Yet with all these talented youngsters, we manage to still be poor at ODI's.
On another note, where has this pace for Finn come from? He is bowling real quick. Consistently 92 mph plus. Real pace is the one thing England lack in the Test side at the moment, so I wonder whether he will get in for Bresnan on unhelpful pitches in India? Or maybe be the fifth bowler. He would offer something different.

List A cricket is totally different to ODI cricket. In domestic cricket you don't see too many high skilled limited overs fast bowlers or high class spinners.JDizzle wrote:Taylor is averaging 50 in List A cricket, and who scored two hundred for the Lions in three games against Sri Lanka A cannot get near the ODI squad. yeah but one man can't win it for his team. He'd try hard no doubt.
Though the lad sure has put some muscle on this year. Built like a rugby player now.
out of interest who are the "we" in the number one?

Re: England vs India, 5th ODI Debate
ouch what a poor poor drop from Patel. Poor Finn.
Good point, he does bring Eng back into things in an eating comp actually
The Indians behind him were punching the air with excitement. Desperate for a win.. you have to credit them still coming to watch.
You can't do that and still beat India.

Sitter ! Patel demonstrating one of the reasons why he isn't a fixture in the one day team..

christ hear that roar.. every time india do anything the roar from their crowd is bloody massive and you think they make up 80% of the crowd, then you see it is less than half.
they must practice shouting at home.
The eng fans should get some coaching from them.
Although maybe the noise has been ruining the gods sleep and they've punishing them for it

But if he averaging more than other people in domestic cricket, it logically implies he would in ODI's. It at least earns him the right to have a shot at it before being written off.

Re: England vs India, 5th ODI Debate
India enjoying a pretty handy start here after being sent in.
Not wishing to usurp trebell's role , but I have a feeling this could be India's day at last ... no Broad, no Anderson , and another new boy in the middle order ...
Finn has been very unlucky today. His ODI figures for this couple of games will probably end up looking rather poor , but I think he has actually enhanced his prospects with his increased pace and generally hostile new ball bowling.

yeah indeed Alfie, the stats don't tell the tale with Finn. He's been really good. Could have been very different if it weren't for that howler from Patel.

Re: England vs India, 5th ODI Debate
oh yes alfie but in a fairly balanced way it must be said.
i think england have done exactly the right thing.
they've won all the series. a defeat means nothing to anyone but India and their desperate fans.
If you can't experiment now, when can you? Pointless dead rubber, ideal for the kids.
i actually think it's going to rain heavily soon but we might get 20 overs in. Could be wrong though.

Re: England vs India, 5th ODI Debate
Agree there trebs ... indeed there was a case for using Butler as well surely? I would never condone "easy" caps in a Test , but a dead ODI is the ideal chance to look at new blood.
Dravid in for his last ODI innings and I wouldn't begrudge him a score ... come to think of it I wouldn't begrudge India a win either - must be going soft

Afternoon lads, back in after another day of 6th form, how are the boys doing?
Re: England vs India, 5th ODI Debate
When we are at the bottom of our slump Alfie, i can't imagine ever being OK about Eng losing and giving the other team a win for a change, bu ti kind of agree with you.
Though the other side of me thinks we need to get them in the bank as we won't get much change out of India in India.

oh that was poor from Patel.
and Swann gets a wicket in his first again!!
they need to play him in ten one over spells.. he'd get a tenfer every time.
India must be pleased they have MSD and Raina to save them whatever happens. Those two are in fine form.

Re: England vs India, 5th ODI Debate
Swann's (usual) first over strike has England marginally on top again ... but I'm not predicting anything after that 4th match ...
Indeed India on their own pitches - and with a few first choice players back - will be a totally different opponent. I fancy whichever bowlers they go with, England will need to make some big scores if they're to have success there.
On the other hand they do keep surprising us with their improvements lately ...

India cutting loose a bit now. Bound to happen. They have nothing to lose and they know they need a massive total to defend well.

Re: England vs India, 5th ODI Debate
true alfie. it'll be all about the batting over in India and to be fair that aspect has saved England a lot of late.
India may look all flash and amazing and if you followed the sky cameras and the indian crowd you'd think they had been on top all summer but engs less flashy style has still managed to get the runs.

Re: England vs India, 5th ODI Debate
Dhoni should have batted at 4, Virat hasn't been in the best of touch, and MSD, being the best ODI batsman in the side at the moment, should have had as much overs to face as possible, start with those singles, and ones in, could have gone for his shots. the MSD v2 can't go for his shots right away as he used to do in his pre-captaincy days.

Who'll bowl the extra overs today.
Say 30 from the seamers, 10 from Swann, 6-8 from Patel depending on how he goes.
2 from Bops?

Crowd in good voice - hope it stays fine for them.
India look to be on for a decent score here so I think it will be another fairly interesting match which could go either way with or without Duckworth & Lewis.
The lateness of the hour in this time zone means I will have to bid adieu for now to everyone on here , so as far as (English and Indian) cricket goes , good luck today and see you all in the return ODIs in a month or so ...

steadily building these two.
take the score at 30 and double it, add in the India PP.. they could get 280 plus again here.

Swann out injured. huge roar from the Indians whe he got hurt sadly.
The wet outfield did for him.
Bad for England as bowling options look poor with him off and batting could be trouble too.

Re: England vs India, 5th ODI Debate
well we certainly look short of a bowler now but we couldn't have known Swannage would get hurt.
any pressure has gone and the two bowlers are really letting them get on top.
But it's the pattern in every game. Batsmen have dominated. Very typical ODI and short form stuff really. I do much prefer tests.
