England vs India, 5th ODI Debate
First topic message reminder :
So the 5th ODI between India and England is underway, the last act in a terrible summer tour for India, and an opportunity to win at least 1 international match.
A win for England would be a nice way to cap off a wonderful summer.
India have their regular quota of injury yet again, and this time, its their best bowler Praveen Kumar. R Vinay Kumar, and not Varun Aaron takes his place in the XI.
For England, Jimmy Anderson is getting a much deserved rest, and Jade Dernbach gets another game. Johnny Bairstow, the impressive young wicket keeper batsman from Yorks, is in pllace of Ben Stokes, and Samit Patel is getting another game.
The weather has already resulted in a delaied start, and further trouble can be expected.
Your thoughts?

well well. england always turn it into a game somehow don't they?
if they can chase this, if, then you'd have to say 60 more in 16 more was more than dopable.

Re: England vs India, 5th ODI Debate
Great running by these two batsman in between some clean-hitting. Really impressed with Bairstow, may have just booked his place on the plane to India later this year, wouldn't be surprised to see him involved with the T20s next week.
Another good contribution from Bopara. Could have been out from that top-edge that went for 6, but his contribution has been a valuable one as well, as was his last one. I'm not a fan of his by any means, but these last two games he's done his job.

If wo this, then lets be honest msp we are a much better side and have much depth than you me or any of these english indians would ever admit.
You don't hand india their worst even winless summer by luck.

Re: England vs India, 5th ODI Debate
so a horrible end to a horrible tour for India here.
I just feel for Dravid, was the lone fighter in the test matches, and again playd a good hand here, but no luck, Dravid's Last England tour ends in team disaster.

Listening on the internet, sounds like a nice gesture from Dravid walking off with Bairstow....

Re: England vs India, 5th ODI Debate
None of the Indian bowlers could hold it at under a run a ball which tells the story of this series and probably of this tour as a whole. Much harder test coming up in the subcontinent, but for the first time in a long time England are looking like they have a few options.
Re: England vs India, 5th ODI Debate
A very well managed run chase.
Quick start by Kieswetter, Trott broke the back of the target with help from Cook and Bell, then the killer Bs finished the job in style.

Trott was solid but too slow, he needed to get out at that stage.
the young lad was a star,
Man of the series? who do you think?
Maybe.. gulp. Bopara?

Re: England vs India, 5th ODI Debate
This from Boycott
"Jonny Bairstow is a proper batsman and can hit the ball further than anyone at Yorkshire. He also wins all the sprints in training. I think he'll be a far better player than his father and his father was one of my best friends. Jonny is highly competitive, he loves winning and he has that fire in his belly. The selectors are looking for players with character and Jonny fits the bill." "

Re: England vs India, 5th ODI Debate
Well no matter how much we try and say we don't have the right batsmen for an ODI and for hitting sixes and chasing big targets we keep coming up with the goods. Trott and Bell both hit some big sixes and Bairstow/Bopara played excellently in the end. I'm very happy to have been proved wrong about Bopara, he answered pretty much every question I had of him albeit against generally weak bowling but that cannot be helped. Very impressed by young Bairstow, again I wasn't sure he was the right man for the 'power hitter' role but on todays evidence he is definitely a prospect!

indeed Carrot, i am chuffed Bopara proved me wrong in this series.
Bairstow proved it was him not Taylor that should be out there today.

Re: England vs India, 5th ODI Debate
Broad already ruled out I believe so Patel for him and possibly another proper spinner as well being that it is on Indian pitches (Panesar?) for Finn leaving us with 2 seamers and 3 spinners + Bopara. I'd also prefer Bell to Trott but that looks likely to happen. I think we'll get beaten in India with all their big guns back but it will be a good test of where we are as an ODI team. At least it looks like we are going in the right direction and seem to have an idea of the kind of team make up we want.

Re: England vs India, 5th ODI Debate
Its been morale boosting stuff before they leave for India .
However England selectors may think they have the balance in the batting and variety and options in the bowling but it still doesnt feel right to me for the challenge of Indian conditions.
Perhaps they can muddle on through out in India as they did in this series.

Re: England vs India, 5th ODI Debate
This ODI series was a proper tragedy, in teh test series we all know India was rubbish, but in ODI India has been robbed by the rain 3 times and denied a series win.
The good thing came out, that the lads did well without those so called great 3.
Oh well no more mourning, as we all got life ahead of us.

Re: England vs India, 5th ODI Debate
There was no robbing today Active.. 241 in 34 is a tougher challenge than just 60 odd more in 16 more overs.
And the other day could have been an Eng win.
India couldn't defend it is the reason they lost. Will be different with Kahn back but they need to find more depth with the ball.

I do give credit to Trott though, he played brilliant last night.
Re: England vs India, 5th ODI Debate
I must say I din't know Trott even knew how to hit sixes, it was quite impressive. And Liam, I could give you a decent list of ODI wins to which Trott has contibuted, and contributed crucially, but I've rather given up on trying to convince you all that Trott fully deserves his spot in the England side.
Just admit I'm right when we win the next WC with him playing a key role

But can he cope with the nasty short pitched bouncers aimed at his chest/chin by the really express fast bowlers, as Graeme Hick was a batsman who prior to the 1991 test series was a player who too could hit/biff the ball further than anyone else in the English county game. Hick was looking to bully bowlers when he first entered the test scene until he came up against a certain Curtley Ambrose who during that 1991 test series eventually turned out to be his arch nemesis.
