Ireland v Australia - Live Match thread.
First topic message reminder :
After 4 years of waiting, team building and anguish. This game has finally come. A key game to decide who takes control of their own destiny, in this Rugby World Cup Pool and beyond.
Australia and Ireland have History in this comp. A long and close one. History says, Australia beat Ireland every time in this Cup. Albeit twice by 1 point.
Can Ireland beat a team, who I personally believe are the best team in the World right now? I doubt it. They are 2 years ahead of us in their squad development.
But, this Irish team has not performed for an age. Is this the game when Ireland wake up and show Kidney's winning hand? Have we been holding back for this one? I hope so.
Otherwise, Australia will run rough-shod over us and around us.
We are due a huge performance. And it helps our psyche that we are underdogs. A term I normally despise and refuse to accept, but it's true in this case.

Update:.
Pocock is out. Ioane is out. The odds have been altered drastically.
O' Brien is up against a rookie. Ben McCalman. A man even less experienced than him at 7. This is the winning and losing of this game in my opinion. The breakdown. An area Oz excel at. They bullied NZ there. Pocock did McCaw there. Not usual.
Can Ireland compete with the Oz backrow, with Ferris, O' Brien and Heaslip on our side? Can we stop and suppress the opportunities for Genia to do his thing and negate their brilliant back line? That possibility has now been increased, with the loss of the brilliant Pocock. How much so, we don't know yet. But, this will buy Ireland extra time and space to do their voodoo. If, in fact, they have it in them to do so. After a mediocre showing in 5 games leading up to it.
For Ireland: Kearney is back. Healy is Back. Sean O Brien is back. Key players, who were part of a side that demolished an English team chasing the SLAM.
It was the last time Ireland played to their full potential. All games since and before have been mediocre - over the last 2 years.
Aussie are a far superior, technical and cohesive side. No doubt about it. But with the loss to injury, of two key players, the pendulum has swung. It's game on.
Lineups.

Aussie, Irish and all other rugby-mad fans. It would be grand if we could have virtual-pints, mutual-respect, banter and craic on here. Before, during and after the game. Win lose or draw.
Enjoy the game.

Re: Ireland v Australia - Live Match thread.
Tommy Bowe made up for switching off from an OZ quick throw with sealing the match. Was gutted for Murray at the end, this time last year he was playing AIL for Garryowen a year later he is in NZ playing superbly against the 3N champions. Go on Kid!
Are people complaining the ref was biased against OZ? I thought he was ok overall. Rodders, all the fellas you gave out about were amazing!
A SinE styat for you,the winning margin in this match was the same as Munster's victory over Australia last November. 2 Irish players took part in that win while 4 OZ players were present.

Thanx Gibbo
Cymro - I hope you're right about Tommy's limping away there. Hopefully some a rest and an ice pack on it will sort him out. Hope D'Arcy and Healy are OK too, they seemed to have some minor injuries.

The pleasing thing other than the win is that we missed chanced the heads didnt go down we didnt blame each other we worked harder. Pocock was a big miss for the ozzys they were obliterated at the breakdown

Your forwards completely smashed us and the defence was awesome! We just had no answer - and were shown a lesson Gibbo would be proud of.
Believing worked!
The Irish players were so much smarter; with and/or without Lawrence... but that's no excuse. The much better team won on the day.
A great example of teamwork... and sticking to a brilliant plan. Our guys had no clue how to counteract. No rhythm, no flow as they say. They'll have to pick themselves up and try something different next time.
...and best of luck for the next match - all Ireland fans!
Very gracious sir! Best of luck to your boys!
Two difficult games coming up for us now but we've really put this group in our own hands now.

There's no use hiding Willie. Need to face reality
So it puts an end to the Ireland have never beaten Oz...overseas thing.
And what a way to do it. Avoid NZ, and put them in front of us in a Semi! ...if we even get that far.
However, the voodoo of Eden Park still remains for us.

Mickado, you left out DOC. Drico was immense for a fella who looked like he was playing with one arm. The whole team are legends, they gave everything on that pitch. Even though the OZ scrum isn't one of the best we annihalated them there.

+ 1 million.
Everyone was immense but the tight 5 deserve a special mention. ROG and Sexton delivered the goods too.
Bestie gets a slagging at times for his lineout throwing, and sometimes deservedly so, but in the biggest stage he delivered big time. I'm delighted for him.
Cian Healy was absolutely out of this world. Incredible performance!

Can only say congratulations Ireland, a top class performance engineered by the back row of which they seem to have a conveyor belt of talent. Would say hope to meet you in the quarters but not breathing a word before tomorrow's result.

Rory Best has been brilliant the last 2 weeks, deserves to be starting and is now guaranteed his place. A big hand to Conor Murray, going into a game against the 3N champions when you're 3 ahead for your 3rd cap. He dellivered, hats off to him.

Same with Tom Court in the scrum, came on and went straight into a scrum in the Irish 22.

Emotional interview by ROG on RTE there. He's another guy that came to the fore.
I can't praise every single player highly enough. This was a squad effort and I'm including the guys who didn't play too.
We need to keep our feet on the ground because there are bigger and tougher games ahead.
The Italy game will be a real war and Russia is a banana skin too.

Also, props to the phenomenal Irish support that made it over and outnumbered their Aussie counterparts. Who could have predicted that? The Wallabies looked shellshocked and the Irish fuelled with self-belief as a result.
Slightly regretful Pocock didn't make it. The battle will have been fascinating. No disrespect whatsoever to Ireland though.

Thanks Cari, Dave, rodders and everyone.
It's like being whacked by bag of cement right now.
Stunned, gutted and flabbergasted! but there's still hope it all might change in the next few matches. They were completely dominated in so many aspects by the Irish forwards ; they'll have to go back to square one again.
There's also new combinations that will have to tried and tested with players getting replaced or returning from injury... which is another headache for us.
I hope they don't take the US for granted... or else they could be in for another shock!
Enjoy the celebrations!

I suppose if I was being ultra critical I'd say I was disappointed with Heaslip. He was well below par and we need him to up his game.
We got the rub off the green from the referee too. There's plenty to work on.
To keep the Australians from scoring a try is incredible though.

Ok, It was the Irish pack wot won it.
But that double tackle and keeping the tackled player off the ground TOTALLY disrupts the Aussie quick ruck game. What it means is that they are playing pick and drive with the opposition player - Will Gemia being carried ten yards is the most obvious example. The ultimate in aggressive defence.

Yes he did it highlights the changed mindset of irishrugby. Its something we have been criticesed for in the past one of big performances and not following it up hopefully those days are over.Hound_of_Harrow wrote:tecphobe wrote:paulie just being interviewed sure its only a pool game weve only played to our potential need to play like that every week.

Re: Ireland v Australia - Live Match thread.
So. Why did BOD come off?
Anyone got an idea? He was holding a clean towel to his head and as I saw no sign of blood on it.
Could have been
a real blood injury
or
tactical
or
other injury
or
age.
BOD does not leave the field unnecessarily - especially when the game's in the balance.
And another question. Will Kearney get cited for the high tackle?

The ref dealt with the Kearney high tackle on the pitch. I don't think it warranted more than a penalty, and that is exactly what the referee gave. No need for a citing.
Re: Ireland v Australia - Live Match thread.
Did he come back on again?
I didn't notice him.
I sort of saw him on the touchline about ten minutes later though.

I phooking love Paul O'Connell. 'We have only won one pool game and we have only realised our potential in one game. We're supposed to do it every time' (or something to that effect)
What a legend.
I didnt believe they could do it (fair play to those who did) and i dont think many thought SOB and Ferris were the right fit in the backrow but they were immense. Cian Healy was simply superb and Rory Best did have his best game for Ireland.
Edit; well done Declan Kidney. He deserved that from the players

Oh come on Portnoy - give them an hour or so before we start nitpicking .
This is a huge, huge win for Ireland:
It's big monkey off the back. Not just a win, but Aussies without a single point in the second half? When did that last happen? It was a boa constrictor of a win!
In years to come, people might look back on this game as the moment when Ireland ceased to be a regional rugby power, and actually became a world rugby power. It seemed that significant to me.

I hope so. But just because the incident is dealt with on the pitch, does that mean that the citing committee doesn't get interested.
When a player gets stopped at the neck and his legs fly forward is problematical. And you'd have to ask Lawes if he agrees on the balance of recklessness.
