The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
First topic message reminder :
Welcome to the virtual rugby pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the collage of great current hookers pictures on the bar. We've got Tincu, Ledesma, Ford, Best, Thompson and Bennett all in action. Graffiti's a banning offence
So pull up a chair....what'll it be?

Does a state have a right to ban inappropriate culture? Would you object to some of the more obscene rap lyrics being banned?
If these women are in prison, it is of their own making. They should obey the law of the land. They can do this quite easily and still obey the strictures of the Koran to dress modestly.
Fundamentally I agree entirely with all you say, but I feel very strongly the state has no right to determine what is or is not inappropriate culture.
I would encourage civil disobedience when faced with an unjust law as well.

We lost 1-0. I was seriously lacking in match sharpness but that will pick up soon.

No only half pitch. Just a seven a side league. I played up front. Had a few shots. Best one was off my left.
Will be playing 11-a-side for the CU team this year as well.

More in style like the latter but my preferred position is midfield but my fitness needs to improve ten-fold to get there.

A 11 a side games in midfield,if they're 90 minutes you will probably need to improve the fitness. I'm a defensive mid who makes surging runs forward to bolster the attack.

I certainly need to improve my fitness but it will happen. Playing football twice a week, I'm also hoping to play a bit of rugby also as well as keeping up the squash while my diet shall be improved.

Munsty, all that activity it will improve. The 5/6/7 a side can do wonders for fitness if you're committed to it which I'm guessing you are.

KIWI - thanks for putting up that list for me. These things are quite important in the world cup - but that one is a load of rubbish. Not ONE Irish player, would've picked someone else over Max Evans from Scotland, and as for Phillips at number one...

At least Russia are getting a few scores. That was one where if it didn't go to hand they'd be under their own posts though!
You'd think our scrum would have them but there's a big difference in quality between our first choice and second choice.

I just saw this- how nice is it to see five Irish forwards in a NZ newspapers team of the week?
http://www.nzherald.co.nz/sport/news/article.cfm?c_id=4&objectid=10752982
I won't go on, because based on what I've seen there is every chance we could still not qualify. Italy have five points wrapped up here, if they beat us and thrash the USA they'll have 14, 15. Australia will have 15 if they win their next two games.
Even if we get all 5 against Russia, we still need to beat Italy. 6 points from the next 2 games would leave us on 14 points. We need to back-it up against Russia and Italy and win the group.
We were right to be furious about missing the bonus point against the USA.

Chillax there Notch . Stick yer bonus points, we need two wins and we're home free. 8 points. There's no reason to believe we won't get them even if we have to roll up our sleeves and do it the hard way.

Italy are going to be a seriously tough proposition. We;re gonna have to show we can win the tight games- again!
That's what this Ireland team has struggled with. They've already shown they can pull off big performances in big games before we beat the Aussies. They haven't shown they can do it three weeks in a row!
I'm glad the message was 'the hard work starts here' after that game because we've achieved nothing yet!

Ah thats a myth Notch, don't get sucked into the hype. This Ireland team has produced winning runs before. We were unbeaten in 2009 FFS. I know we've struggled for consistancy this year but there's been a lot of chopping and changing in tactics and selection, thats why I want to see us keep the same players for Russia.
Italy will be tough and Russia won't be easy but these are teams we need to be beating if we are to go beyond a QF. If we lose to either of these teams we deserve an early flight home.

Hi all, had super time in London. Thanks to Hughie, Asbo, Munsty and Kiwi who made it a blast.
Notch - I'd argue that we have been very consistent usually. Our seasons have tended to be:
- Beat Scotland, Wales, England and Italy
- Lose to France
- Turn in a top performance/result against one SH team
- Lose to all other SH teams
- Have a poor World Cup
We've been fairly consistent over last decade with that.

No, we haven't. We've consistently flattered to deceive. In almost every single one of those seasons we've performed below the standards we are capable of against France in the Six Nations and hence we won no meaningful silverware in that era. There were a fair few get out of jail free cards played against Italy and Scotland in that period as well.
The thing is, to win a Slam, you need consistency and quality. In that period we had quality but no consistency. We finally delivered in 2009 but in the time since we won that Slam we've been VERY inconsistent.

No, I have to disagree. I'd say our typical Six Nations campaignn has been; play very well against England, quite well against Wales and Scotland, scrape past Italy in a messy game and underperform drastically against France.
So we perform to our full potential on average once or twice in every Six Nations. We might win games, but in the Six Nations you don't need to play very well to win games sometimes. World Cup is generally a lot tougher- which is why your last point happens in the first place.
In fact, just looking at your list, that says inconsistent to me.
