The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
First topic message reminder :
Welcome to the virtual rugby pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the collage of great current hookers pictures on the bar. We've got Tincu, Ledesma, Ford, Best, Thompson and Bennett all in action. Graffiti's a banning offence
So pull up a chair....what'll it be?

I prefer the in-game songs to the anthems. For me there's no better feeling than there being a lull in play and suddenly hearing Flower of Scotland or Swing Slow Sweet Chariot, Waltzing Matilda, Bread of Heaven filling the stadium.
Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Spontaneous singing in the crowd is great, Stag. Music played from the loudspeakers is not.

Completely agree. They've started blasting music out before ko at Parc Y Scarlets, it completely drowns out the crowd which are trying to get a sing-song going and ruins the atmosphere. Honestly can't figure out why they do it

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
They make a similar mistake before internationals at the Millennium Stadium, Dreamer. They have a choir on the pitch singing hymns rather than a band playing them as they used to. I'd say people are likely to sing along to a band and sit and listen to a choir.

Definitely Lucky. I know lots of Scarlets fans have complained to the people who run the stadium but they still persist with it, and it isn't even a nice version of Sospan Fach they are playing!
I miss the bands at the MS too. Used to love that.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
One thing that I really hate is when a game's in the balance and the stadium announcer comes on and says, 'come on, let's get behind X' (X being the home team, of course). That's out of order, I think. They have home advantage and the home crowd shouldn't need to be reminded to cheer.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
In terms of the whole SUFTUM thing at Ravenhill, they play the music but when the crowd gets going they cut it out and the crowd goes on by itself. It sort of works because it gets it started.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
I've never heard of that happening Luckless. Notch I agree the SUFTU works well.
Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
It works because it starts just before the team runs out so everyone is singing and cheering when they run out. If there was no stadium announcer or music, we'd only start when the team ran out and not together.
The stadium announcer won't come on to spur on the crowd but he will occasionally add something like "Come on ULSTER!!" after he makes an announcement and at halftime. I think this is fair. You get the same treatment at away grounds for the home side.
Must add that before every match, the announcer also announces the visitors and asks the crowd to give them a round of applause.

Indeed! I was referring to general booing and apathy though.
It's pretty standard to boo players who get sent off, but not man of the match award winners. DON'T TAKE THIS TOO SERIOUSLY!!
Whenever I say these things some people take them very seriously sometimes.

Id love Bright Side Of The Road as our fans theme song of choice, for this RWC. Phhok Anthems. Lets Enjoy It While We Can. We may never have days like these again.
But Shoulder to Shoulder it is. Mickado and I belted it out together at Lansdowne and it felt so right.
As for Russia - we should use that game to get this backline firing, because it has not of yet . If we don't put at least 40 on them - something is wrong. They are clueless and must be put to the sword.
Italy will throw the kitchen-sink at us, like they always do. But, so did the 2nd best team in the World... ergo. I want 5 pts not 4 against them. Aim for beyond the hole, or the ball will never make it to the cup. I want us to blow them away like Oz did. We have it well within us to do it. We need to build momentum and mediocrity wont do now.
Ireland Expects.
Good aft regs. Hope ye are all fine and dandy vandaag.

See? People get really precious about it. Cari, was it not you who actually brought the poor conduct of the Ospreys fans against Edinburgh up in the pub in the first place?
Myself and Stag have many times discussed what we consider to be the fickle and tribal nature of some other Irish rugby fans and criticised them for it, but when you criticise someone else you're just 'having a dig'? Seems silly to get upset about it. Especially as you actually seem to agree with me.

Cari was just gonna type almost exactly what Notch did.
We spent this morning criticising many our own fans who have agendas and won't get behind the team.
Notch isn't "having a dig". Just talking about another teams fans too - ones your yourself were very critical of. You even complained about them on the Ospreys fan page.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
You might as well say I'm anti-Ireland as anti-Ospreys
Of course, there are two main incidents in recent years which have made me disapprove of the way Ospreys have conducted themselves as a club BUT I truly don't see the value in going over them again

You are getting a bit precious about it to be fair Cari
If you say it about the Ospreys it's ok. If I say the exact same thing it's not ok. And this conversation started by Lucky criticising the Ospreys stadium announcer and me defending him and saying I had no problem with his behaviour! I didn't bring it up. He mentioned the Liberty and Millennium Stadium.

You are in stir mode these days though Notch.
Burcas, Anthems, Flags, Ospreys...
What next? I cant wait.
Ok, how about bigotted Saffers? Paddy Wallace for Chief Water-boy? He has the quick hands and could dish them out with such precision - thus saving time and making us look a lot more professional...
But how about a serious one?
Rory Best for Captain after the RWC? He has finally and rightly claimed that spot on pure merit alone.

Gibbo, how are you pal!!
Here's a discussion that the outside boards aren't ready for.
Could Paddy Wallace see no game time in the World Cup? O'Gara at 10 and Sexton at 12 must have been a kick in the teeth for him.
With regards to keeping the powder dry I was telling Hughie and Asbo at weekend that before the Eng v Ireland warm up match I was introduced to a family member of his who suggested he was training at 12 as well as 10.

Australia are the only team to have not conceded a try.
The only teams to have scored less tries than Ireland are USA, Georgia and Wales. Namibia, Canada and Scotland have scored more than Ireland!

Cheers Cari
Paddy Wallace has great fast hands. They'll be much needed to entertain the matchday 22 with a great display of juggling etc. etc.
Rory Best is a good leader and is an important presence for Ireland on the pitch, but I think there is still a few years left in Paul O'Connell and I'd have him as Captain every time. Best is an important leader, you need lots of leaders and I'd say he's a guy who can fill in as Captain whenever necessary but O'Connell is kind of inspirational!
To be fair, I was talking about the old version of Batman this morning. Anyone got a problem with Batman? Wanna fight about it?

I think he will be picked against Russia but if not, it's possible. I have a suspicion if he's not named he and a few other guys will be on the bench for the Russia game anyway. It's possible that Wallace, Varley, Boss, Jennings and McFadden will not get any time on the pitch but I think Kidney will want to keep his full squad sharp and give at least some of those guys time on the pitch to a) keep them feeling involved and prevent a 'split' like in 2007, though this seems unlikely and b) make sure they are ready to step in right away if there's an injury.
The injury of D'Arcy makes me think Wallace will play 12 and Sexton rested- possibly to come on second half.

My gut tells me he will play against Russia but is:
10 O'Gara
12 Wallace
13 McFadden
not the weakest backline defensively you've ever encountered.
I expect mass changes for the Russia game. Wales will probably do same against Namibia. Why get overtired and have Italy or Fiji beating you.

Nah, I agree. The best part of today is when they scaled a wall and so obviously were creeping along the ground with the camera on it's side. And of course, the stock footage they re-use! Class.

Story Stag?
Hope you had a good one in Lahndaan mate.
Well... Gaffney has indicated as much. Straight from the horses mouth sotospeak. They are both fantastic 10's... but when the two of them are on the field together, I feel very safe. And always believe we can control the game and do something special. So YES, I'm all for that 10 12 combo in this RWC.
Mick and I saw it and commented on it v France and Kidney/Gaffney must have had in their arsenal already. Cute Hoors . Its a great option.

Actually Stag, that's been contradicted by McNaughton today;
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/rugby_union/14992095.stm?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter
The article also infers Cullen and Wallace could make their first appearances of the RWC as O'Connell and D'Arcy may be rested after sustaining knocks.
I think the fact Wallace started two warm-ups at 12 suggests he'll be in like flynn but look at the number of games Fitzgerald and O'Leary had in the warm-ups! That said, Wallace played better than those two.
I agree with the sentiment that O'Gara-Sexton is a great option for us.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/rugby_union/14992095.stm?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter
Paul McNaughton wrote:"Yes we could [make 13 changes] but we won't. You saw the USA game. We will prepare properly. We won't make that many changes and will take the game extremely seriously and win that and get it over with and then move on to Italy. We've used about 24/25 players as it is, or at any rate 24/25 have togged out. So if we do give a game to some of those guys who haven't had game time, it doesn't infer 13 changes, it doesn't infer massive change."

I'd imagine something like:
Healy, Cronin, Buckley
Cullen, O'Connell
Leamy, O'Brien, Jennings
Murary, O'Gara
Wallace, Earls
Trimble, Kearney, McFadden
Best, Court, O'Callaghan, Ferris, Reddan, Sexton, Murphy
Healy, Cronin, Buckley
Cullen, O'Connell
Leamy, O'Brien, Jennings
Murary, O'Gara
Wallace, Earls
Trimble, Kearney, McFadden
Best, Court, O'Callaghan, Ferris, Reddan, Sexton, Murphy

Paul O'Connell picked up a calf strain against Australia remember Stag. I can't see them risking him if he's carrying an injury, however minor.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
All Saffers seem to know their rugby. As do the Kiwis. I spoke to a girl from Rotorua on Sunday night. She made a brilliant case as to why NZ will not lose a game in this Cup. Then, as she was walking out the door, she put her hands around her throat in a mock-choking expression. Brilliant.
She was cute too.
Holy odd-socks Batman! Robin, in the original TV series, was class. Sooo camp. They must have pished themselves laughing making it.

No they'll call them two 5/8ths. 5/8ths (10 and 12) are the players in between the halfbacks and the three-quarter line (11, 13, 14).
This doesn't really happen too much anyway, except sometimes off scrums in centre field.
