First topic message reminder :

Welcome to the virtual rugby pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.

The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the collage of great current hookers pictures on the bar. We've got Tincu, Ledesma, Ford, Best, Thompson and Bennett Shocked all in action. Graffiti's a banning offence Wink

So pull up a chair....what'll it be?

Tonga v Japan is a super game so far. How's everyone. Munsty I'd say why bother to make any active efforts to discourage her. If she asks you out or makes a move then just say you aren't interested. If she doesn't do anything like that why the need to stir the pot?

I had a MicroKorg a few years ago. The sounds you can get out of it are amazing, I'd spend hours on it with my headphones on. But I can't play piano so I couldn't play proper tunes and I wasn't in a band by then, so I sold it to my brother-in-law, who was in a band.

Did you know Stephen Ferris gave his matchday shirt to an Irish fan in the crowd after the game at the weekend? What a memento! I 80% feel it was an awesome gesture, and 20% feel he abuses every opportunity to take his shirt off.

I can play a few cords already just from messing about on buddys guitars and ill just teach myself the rest. I do have manky fingers though that don't like to bend in certain waya so iy might just scupper me haha

Hughie, i have been playing for four months now and are starting to really enjoy it, know a few songs off by heart and from sheet music can play a number quite well, we have a three man jam session every friday and it is good fun.

See if you can find one or two guys to play with, it helps a lot.

Here are some websites you will find very useful.

For all your chords. It gives you over 400 different chords to play. start with the basic ones first, then the minors and 7's
http://www.8notes.com/guitar_chord_chart/B7.asp

to get the chords for all your favourite songs.
http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/

I have done around 50 songs on word, so if you require them I can emial them to you, just pm me your email address, they are ready to print.

The way we do it is to listen to the song a number of times, get all the pauses and strummings right and then start practicing.

good luck.

Just a note my songs aren't the new age wacka wacka, it is mostly from the beatles, eagles, ccr, chris de burgh ( although we struggle to sing as high as he does) and some other golden oldies.

My favourtie ones are House of the rising sun and Streets of London.

The best part about learning to play guitar is the first time you manage to play along to a song and change chord in time with the song. It's a real breakthrough. Mine was Nirvana's version of 'Molly's Lips,' the whole song's C and G all the way through.

I'm asking for subtle hints not saying it to her straight out. Makes me feel uncomfortable myself.

Missed the first half of this game. Sickened. Second half has been very exciting. Good try by Vainikolo. Connacht fans will enjoy watching this.

Thats fair enough just make sure you don't come across as being rude or unfriendly when doing so. Unless she is taking active steps to seduce you, I say just forget about it if nothings gonna happen.

Not necessarily for this tmo but do you all think that the ref's are becoming a bit too reliant on going to the video ref? Some of the ones for this world cup have been obvious tries.

Possibly Prop but a ref will get crucified if he allows a try in a World Cup and the TV replays show it shouldn't have been or similarly decides its held up and we see a try has been scored.

I don't like the TV ref myself but I think referees should certainly use it when they have it.

Yeah I agree with that Stag, but there's been some where surely the touch judges would have seen a blatant foot in tough, I can't remember who it was but someone had their foot quite a way in touch, went on and dived over and it went to video ref with the tj right by the player!!

Biltong, why not try experimenting with different voicings for the chords when playing it? There are multiple different ways you can voice those chords even in the first five frets. Try exploring some of those voicings and see how it changes the sound whilst maintaining the essential harmony thumbsup

Ultimate guitar is a good website Hughie, there’s an app too. it even scrolls down in time with the song so you can set it and forget it!

Right now I’m enjoying playing in different styles of tuning. Have it tuned to some kind of openG at the moment, i think? (DGDGBE), sounds really nice…

That's open G Mickado yes. It's a pretty easy tuning! Already harmonised when the guitar is open.

Regarding Ultimate Guitar, it's great in the way wikipedia is great. Anything can be put up by anyone and is rated by members. So some of the tabs are just inaccurate, but some are great.

Great analogy. There is some garbage on there, suppose if i play something and it doesn't sound right i'll cop it but that might not be possible for a beginner.

Nice use of open G here from Sungha Jung:

Tonga v Japan has been one of my favourite RWC matches this year.

Prop - if they scored any of those kicks it would have been different. They wouldn't have got the other penalties necessarily as the game would have changed. It would have restarted differently, different rucks, different plays. Tonga could have scored a try from the restart who knows.

France and New Zealand will get through in this group but I'm really looking forward to seeing Tonga play against France. Could be a really good game of rugby.

I hope Kirwan stays in charge of Japan. He's done a fantastic job with them and I can only see them improving further under him.

Thanks Notch, will be trying things like taht soon, at this point especially with chris de Burgh that is quite necessary because of his ability to sing much higher than we can. We have changed a few songs to get the chords a little lower as well.

But I am at the beginning stages still and will get creative once I am confident enough, at my age it is a challenge in itself to learn a new instrument.

Was just a simple observation about decision making and the number of penalties given. Ok I may not know about the tactical bit of rugby but I do like to comment on it now and again. Got to love the supportive nature.

Yeah no need to rush things! Just take your time and enjoy it. I wasn't talking about transposing up or down though, you can change the voicing without changing the key.

For instance the most common voicing of C major is;

0
1
0
2
3
X

But it can also be played like this, with an added 7th (B)

3 7 12
1 5 12
4 5 12
2 5 10

or without the 7th;

3 8 12
1 5 13
0 5 12
2 5 10

Basically if you imagine C major is 3 different notes (C, E, G is the major triad- the 1st, 3rd and 5th degrees of the scale. The 7th degree is B, and this gives it a nice jazzy inflection) than any combination of those three notes anywhere on the neck of the guitar is a C major chord. Why always play one voicing? You can play any chord in so many different ways across the instrument.

When you say "voicing" do you mean that you can also play a Cmaj as:

0
1
0
2
3
3

?
I'm not familiar with properly musical terms. My pal got his masters in Music last week, i should really mine him for some tips...

notch to make matters even worse, I play left handed and had to inverse all the chords for easier reading, otherwise when you come up with a new chord it takes too long to work out where your fingers go.
