The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
First topic message reminder :
Welcome to the virtual rugby pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the collage of great current hookers pictures on the bar. We've got Tincu, Ledesma, Ford, Best, Thompson and Bennett all in action. Graffiti's a banning offence
So pull up a chair....what'll it be?

I'd say yourself and MrP have in many ways a more intimate and considered relationship than I do with the hairdresser/barber (what is the correct terminology?) I just met today!

Nothing, I'm just fed up of facebook. Plus, there's a massive data trail of my personal info on facebook. It's impossible to erase it now but de-activating my profile would help.
If I mind my privacy settings from the start with Google+ it won't necessarily be the same. I won't be putting my phone number etc. on there, which is currently on facebook.
Let's not be silly and say Google care about privacy and don't snoop into personal data- they don't and they do. But I would plan to be a bit more savvy about what I put on it.

You'd probably have to go through the courts if you wanted to delete your facebook account lucky. You can only de-activate it. If you decide to come back all your profile information is still there.
This is good because you may have a change of heart, you can pick up where you left of.
This is bad because Facebook retains all the data you have ever entered into their site even if you expressly request that they not. No backsies! And then you wonder who else has that kind of info...
Big Brother. It's here- Google, Facebook etc. are all at it.

People didn't ask questions when they first joined. This is the consequence. Same in Ireland where people spent so much money during the boom years without asking questions.

Yeah, it is. But facebook aren't exactly up front about it. It took a lot of criticism to get them to say anything about it.
I remember when facebook started in the UK in 2006; it was exclusively for students and networking in Universities at that stage. It was just a cool, new, trendy thing to have and people kind of got sucked along without thinking it all the way through.
Beware the wolf in sheep's clothing!

It's funny to think back to 2006 because I was just starting University in Edinburgh; for us, facebook was the way we negotiated our freshers week and so on. Took over from bebo within about two days, because it was the internet hangout for students by students.
So when they decided to open it to the general public it was this massive deal! Controversial. I mean, just anybody could join and see your photos. Your drunken freshers week photos with all the boobs, beer and joints- and now there was nothing to stop your parents signing up and seeing it. That was so weird to us back then.

Its also the 1st port of call for a prospective employer. They scan all those sites as standard now. People really haven't a clue what they do with that info.
I'm thinking of getting away from GMAIL now and using my ISP mail instead. They are complete and utter, intrusive - basterds and build up a complete profile of you. They scan your message content FFS! They know what is in your private mail. It's like opening some one's letters. Isn't that against the Law? Did I just say Law? Sheesh.
Im soo phhoked. I used get death-threats from Funda-mentalists, who did not like.. lets say... my style of writing or opinions on Youtube. I used go rabid on them, Corporations, Yanks, 911, CIA, Brit intelligence, Mossad, too. All the no-no stuff.
I deleted that particular userid and as much content as I could. But hey... id bet its all still there.
They've got my number if they need me.

It's not really what I got into. When I joined the site you needed an e-mail address ending with .ac.uk or international equivalent to get an account. No way for non-students or non-academics to access it. Jeez, did that change quickly!

what's weird is that I still have to log in with my .ac.uk e-mail address even though it's defunct and can't be used for anything else. Weird. I've made sure that I've got maximum privacy settings on mine now though so only friends can see my details.
Munsty - nope looks like there's f all on the teledu tonight. Never seems to be anything good on it much anymore, and deffo not mid week!
And just seen on another article that Scarlets have signed on Garin Jenkins as their forwards/scrummaging coach for the short term. A great move by them I have to say.

When was the last time anyone wrote a letter about just stuff?
Not congrats or condolences or ritual stuff like Xmas. But just a letter.
I'm searching my memory bank and frankly it must be ten to fifteen years. And I'm pretty certain that most people under 25-30 never have (school-sponsored pen-pals excluded).
A lot of social history will disappear without letters and a lot of present and future burgeoning careers will be peremptorily shortened by the eternal memory of social networking.

More information will live on indeed as it's entrapped within a web that is far more lethal than that of a spider.
And once the technology evolves to convincingly drill down in a very clever algorithm, then nobody will be safe from flippant or (worse) candid declarations or images or audio etc.
Closing old accounts won't work in the case of people who want to hide their past. And the more technology progresses the more every keystroke/digital interaction will be monitored.
Anyone who truly believes that digital encryption is safe is deluded. Whether by trojans or geeks they will be decryped as the Germans were in the WW2 Enigma Code.

The personal letter is of inestimable value. I recall letters I wrote to my mum as a student and she loved and treasured them almost as much as my Dad's from Burma in the War.
There is something very special about a written thought.
Must write one soon. So much more personal than tinterweb.
How long does it take? Ten minutes. Get a stamp and shove it in a post box.
Starting one now to my brother...

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Chavhanga deal done
I write a lot of letters when I'm away and the ones I receive off my family mean so much. My good wife writes so often to me and it really makes my day getting blueys (letters) off her, even though there is a way you can type them online.
I was made to write a letter of thanks to an activity centre in North Wales as punishment because three lads and I broke the curfew on a night out. I didn't really see it as punishment though, as we had a great time and so thanking the four instructors (one each) was very worthwhile.
Anyway, later.

Ah, as I've hid the link it's not that visible on my last post, but there's finally something official on the Tondi Chavhanga move to Dragons (in that he's confirmed the move). Hope we get to utilise his pace. At least if Adam Hughes is centre, we'll get somebody who can straighten a line and not cut him out.
Just need an official announcement from Rodney Parade Ltd and hopefully the Andy Tuilagi deal will be announced soon too.
Probably only of interest to Lucky and Rhino (if he pops in). On that note, I bid you goodbye for a few days or more.

I used to write letters regularly when I moved from my home town down to the south coast in the mid-90's. Letters to my parents, my sis and to friends were a regular occurence. I think I stopped when I moved back oop north. I did love getting them though.

Not quite so, Thomond.
The British Library is obliged to archive everything published in the UK - easy with books, all publishers have to send them a copy; but the internet is proving a nightmare for them; average life of a web-page (a few years ago) was eight months; so if the BL was nine months behind the times, they'd lose it ...

Like some of our posts on 606. Mad, mad, days and nights.
We have cleaned up our act on here. Its more PC.
But is it better? Maybe its just different.
Having said that, myself, KingKenny and PJHolybloke, had a riot last night/mid morning - without banning. We had to moderate ourselves in the end. And we did. Sooo...

Evening folks,
When I used to go to the Gaeltact as a chizzler it was common practice to write goodbye notes to as many people as possible and every note you'd right/receive would have your/their address with it. Many letters were sent and received and it was brilliant. We were lucky back then as we were on the cusp of this internet age, I guess its all "find me on facebook" now and not a letter exchanged between any of them, shoite buzz.
Just in bed now, having a hot whiskey hoping to blow away the man flu that is creeping up on me. One of my girls is moving back to oz on Sunday and I'm really going to miss her, she's great and not going to lie, have developed a few feelings towards her, another Poopie buzz
Gibbo, just been thinking about something and you will have a PMS asap, its important

Interesting that you should say that because if you ever get round to reading any of James Lovelock's books he points out that in the event of a global scale disaster and the failure of our energy supplies all of the knowledge we have acquired would be lost to any surviving humans and only those in written text would prevail for future generations.
