The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
First topic message reminder :
Welcome to the virtual rugby pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the collage of great current hookers pictures on the bar. We've got Tincu, Ledesma, Ford, Best, Thompson and Bennett all in action. Graffiti's a banning offence
So pull up a chair....what'll it be?

No, this week is freshers week. Bloody freshers staggering around the place all over the shop! Nothing worse than watching other people having fun. I myself have several books I'm meant to have read and digested by the start of term. No jagermeister here pal!

I still have my Encyclopedia Britannica. 33 volumes. All knowledge is there to kick-start it and to preserve what came before. I can reinvent the wheel. If I can keep em dry that is.

Probably not but things like modern medicine, engineering etc. all this knowledge we've acquired over the past century would be gone.
Didn't we lose lots of knowledge of astronomy when the mayans were wiped out? And during the dark ages?

How would future generations know about Ireland winning the RWC in 2011?!!

Best chance of that is if there is a nucleur holocaust and the hardy survivors can make up whatever they want! Unfortunately, rodders, I don't think you are quite hardy enough

Bore da pawb / good morning all. I've still got a box of old letters I've received from friends and family over the years. So much more meaningful than an email, even if you printed the email. They're time capsules, too. I should write more letters. We should write more letters. Everyone should write more letters.

Chavhanga's coming to the Dragons, Rev? I hadn't even heard rumours about that. That makes him the first Springbok (or ex-Springbok) we've had since Percy, I think.

Not congrats or condolences or ritual stuff like Xmas. But just a letter.
I'm searching my memory bank and frankly it must be ten to fifteen years. And I'm pretty certain that most people under 25-30 never have (school-sponsored pen-pals excluded).
A lot of social history will disappear without letters and a lot of present and future burgeoning careers will be peremptorily shortened by the eternal memory of social networking.
I write letters fairly frequently Portnoy, to one of my best mates from Uni who I very rarely get to see. We both like writing and receiving them so works for us.

I think there were some top points made on the letter front by Portnoy. Its such a more personal way of doing things.
I think this marks one week now when I have agreed with every point Portnoy has made in here and disagreed with none. Spooky

Could well be. SA have looked very sharp so far. 17-0 already and they've had another possible try ruled out.

I really am quite impressed with a lot of Namibia's play. They aren't being bullied by SA at the breakdown and they're really looking to run the ball.

What is all this nonsense about letters being in some way more 'personal'? Does less thought go into an electronic form of communication than a written one? It's what's in the communication, not its format that matters - time to accept that there is such a thing as progress. Sounds to me like you lot would take us back to writing on clay tablets!
Will that do?

I can see your point, Asbo, but I disagree. I'd say that, in the main, less thought / consideration goes into an email. Not every time, of course, but most of the time. I have done no research whatsoever into this.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Good evening/morning all, I hope everything's fine.
They're usually the words I start my letters off with... then I go into the main body with some anecdotal story or a trivial account of a journey somewhere... always ask about the pets, send your love to the other relos and then sign off with plenty of Xs and Os.
I think SA might pull away here in the second half. Namibia have shown promise are but unfortunately behind on the scoreboard.
I hope it's not a cricket score. (We have a cricket break until they depart for SA in October... it's been non-stop since 2008 and we've lost everything - twice.)
I'm trying not to worry about tomorrow's game v USA. There's so many replacement players. It's like a patched up old WWII air craft carrier with a severe shortage of state-of-the-art jets on the decks. I can see them doing OK but the real test will be after the Russia game at the end of the round. We need our big five back.
The weather is nice and mild at the moment. Cool breezes taking the edge off a hot spell but there is more heat on the way coming from the desert areas to our north west.
I tipped SA by 44 but I can see them scoring more than 13 points easily once they start throwing it around with the speedsters.

I don't see why that should be the case, Lucky, tbh - the advantage of electronic communication is the speed of delivery, it need not affect the content. Now telephone call vs text is a different argument altogether ...luckless_pedestrian wrote:I can see your point, Asbo, but I disagree. Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
In music, we call it the fetishisation of the analogue. People cream over old vinyl records, old analogue tape recorders. Of course, there's plenty of valid reasons to bash many digital encryption algorithms and MP3s can be pretty low quality but have you ever tried to edit magnetic tape? I haven't but it's an incredibly difficult, painstaking process.
I think what people miss about vinyl and analogue recording is the imperfections; little anomalies in the frequency response that lend the recordings a sort of character, like your lover's messy handwriting. Somehow something thats slightly off, well- it just seems more human somehow.
But nostalgia makes us ignore the drawbacks to the old ways.

It shouldn't be the case, Asbo, but I bet it is in most cases. There's something about committing something to paper that makes you pause a bit more and consider what you're going to write before writing it.

There's nothing wrong with the medium at all. But the immediacy with which you can send an email, and any corrections, might lead people to put less thought into what they write. As I say, I have no evidence for any of this, it's just a hunch.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Asbo I would say it depends wholy on the circumstances. For something urgent I would have to consider e-mail the best way forward. However in many social situations a letter is the more personal touch. I think I've written 4 personal letters in the last 12 months. One for example was from Ghana. I could have logged onto Facebook and jotted down info. Instead a 5 page letter was way better to send.
Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
I see where you're coming from, Staggy, but why did you, the sender, believe that the written word would be more personal, or why did you believe that the recipient would find it more personal? What would have been the actual differences in the content had those 4 letters been sent as emails?red_stag wrote:Asbo I would say it depends wholy on the circumstances. The handwritten element of the letter makes it more personal. Seeing their style of handwriting spelling mistakes, words scribbled out, maybe jottings in the side margins, doodles on the back.
Plus, it always always more exciting to receive a letter than an email.

Because its the thought and effort that counts.
A similar analogy. At Christmas I can buy someone a voucher for a shop. Or a can put a bit of effort in and buy a gift which is more personal. Similarly seeing something in one's indiviudal handwriting adds a personal touch which is more appropriate in the right circumstances.
BTW - Houggard is really impressing me. IMO he's their best scrum half going forward.

Tosh! Unless your style of handwriting changes from missive to missive, how can someone who knows you already (ie the recipient) read anything into handwriting style? Most folk would try to avoid scribbled out words, and spelling mistakes would be as commonplace in e-comms; as far jottings in the side margins and doodles on the back?! Hope I never get a letter from you, Munsty!!!MBTGOG wrote:The handwritten element of the letter makes it more personal. Further nonsense! Why does written communication require more thought? Or even effort? (in Ghana for example, I presume that pen and paper were more readily to hand than an internet connection?). Your analogy is a poor one too - a better one would be using the internet to buy a specific gift versus going into a shop - ie the end result is the same in both cases!red_stag wrote:Because its the thought and effort that counts.

Munsty - it wasn't signed. Actually its wasn't handwritten. An envelope with a scrap of paper with printed letters. It said something about cleaning up their act, how can people be expected to live amongst all the flith. It was really random.
But it was addressed to them by name and posted.
