Stephen Peters is the new Northants Championship captain, and Alex Wakely the new one-day captain.
Meanwhile, (old news but not reported here) Niall O'Brien has moved from Northants to Leics.

Worcs have signed 29 year old paceman Graeme Cessford on a one year contract after he was granted elite athlete status by the RAF so he could sign the deal. Played for the 2nd's a fair bit last year.

Apparently he's a Corporal so should certainly get support from one of our regular posters!

Sajid Mamood has joined Essex
Great signing for them. Still a great bowler, esspicaly in the county championship. Maurice Chambers could also develop as a cricketer with this move, could learn a lot from Sajid.

Re: County Ins and outs
Mahmood an interesting one - still has potential (but hasn't shown it for some time) but is he really what Essex need? They already have a tearaway in Tymal Mills.
Meanwhile, Rob Key has stepped down as Kent captain after being the longest serving county captain - anyone know who that mantle passes over to now? James Tredwell replaces him, with Geraint Jones (the vice-captain) tweeting that the announcement of Tredwell as skipper was the first he knew of Key's resignation!

Shelsey - very much with you about both Mahmood and Mills.
Some Lancs supporters I chatted to at Guildford this summer said what a ''lovely bloke'' Saj Mahmood was but conceded his bowling had been too erratic for too long.
At a Surrey members' forum towards the end of the 2011 season, Rory Hamilton-Brown emphasised that Mills was incredibly fast.
No idea who the longest serving skipper is now. Glenn Chapple at Lancs? He's certainly no spring chicken.

Re: County Ins and outs
Mark O'Neil will not be returning to Middlesex in 2013 .He has been their batting coach for the past two seasons during which time the county won promotion to The First Division of the County Championship.
Much speculation abounds about his replacement, with Mark Ramprakash 's name much to the fore.
Mark left the county in 2001 when the club reluctantly released him from his contract and he joined Surrey .
The manner of his leaving directly after enjoying a successful benefit with Middlesex still rankles with many at the club.
Mark, close friends with Middlesex director of cricket Angus Fraser with whom he played club cricket before joining the county has often commented that ''he has unfinished business still at Middlesex, where he first played as a seventeen year old.

George Bailey is Hampshire's overseas player for 2013, and Neil McKenzie will also return (as in 2012, a desire for some time off between the SA and English seasons means he'll come over for the T20 and then stay on for the rest of the season).
Meanwhile, Bilal Shafayat has been released (again)

Worcs had been in talks with Phil Hughes about a return, guessing his return to the test squad may hinder those talks unless he has a poor spell.

Hasn't really worked out for Jordan at Surrey - never regained any consistency after his long injury lay off. Hope it works well for hims at Sussex - he certainly had a lot of natural talent. But I think he's at the stage where he needs to kick on fairly sharpish or his career will peter out all too soon.

Good signing that.
Abdur Rehman is back at Somerset for another season, whilst Ramnaresh Sarwan will captain Leicestershire in the Championship next year (Josh Cobb was appointed one-day captain a few months ago)

Hope Ramps does well in the job. Be interesting to see whether it works out as achieving huge success as a county batsman doesn't necessarily equate to having the ability/personality traits to be a good coach.

Re: County Ins and outs
Ramps has aquired all his coaching badges, worked extensively with young cricketers over the past few years and has been acknowledged by many to have all the attributes that a good coach needs. He commands huge respect through his own magnificent achievments in cricket.
The long association he has had with Middlesex since a very early age makes him the ideal candidate for this post and the county fought off stiff competition from elsewhere for his services.
I've little doubt he will be a huge sucess in his new role.

Ed Cowan has signed for Notts for the first part of the season.
Sure to raise some controversy with the Ashes coming up, but my view is that its not the county game's job to make life difficult for England's opponents.
I'd rather see two well prepared sides in any case. Additionally, we shouldn't assume he'll necessarily benefit - what if he has a poor run on green seamers and loses form/ confidence?

Worcs have signed Australian wicket-keeper Michael Johnson on a 1 year contract. He played for Kent 2nds last year, lives in England according to his twitter so I'm guessing he's a kolpak player rather than our overseas player, at least I hope so!
Re: County Ins and outs
very good signing for Notts...altough im not sure how he slots in to their side to be honest..

I distinctly remember Phil Hughes scoring stacks of runs for Middlesex before the last Ashes series over here, and there being an uproar about it but it didn't do him too much good in the end!

Only a bit of an exaggeration but season before last Ojha almost single handedly got Surrey promoted to Div 1 by his dramatic contributions in a few matches at the end of the season

Re: County Ins and outs
I think Hants have done very well there... Bailey will be a very useful signing in the first part of the season, and then Ajmal will surely take bags of wickets at the end.
Only slight caveat is that Ajmal has dropped out of county deals a couple of times in the past. You never know when international series/ the Pakistan Super League etc. might pop up.

Evening all, Even if it's only a two month deal Ajmal is a good signing for any side. Especially at the end of the season. To be fair to him on dropping out of contracts just about every popular overseas player in recent years has done it a few times. It isn't surprising at all to see some counties giving up on signing 'marquee' players in recent seasons.

Chris Jordan has been completely useless for the last 3 years, although that's not to say he won't find some form with a fresh start at Sussex.

At the risk of being pedantic I would draw attention to Essex v Surrey in Sept 2011. In a crucial match Jordan scored 71 and 79* and took 4 - 57 in Essex's second innings. So he was not entirely useless, tho it's fair to say that this performance was pretty much a very rare exception. Maybe Jordan and Sussex can somehow between them find a way of rekindling the spark.

Chanderpaul has signed a two year deal with Derbyshire.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/cricket/20955711
I don't know a huge amount about the make up of the Derby squad but this can only be a good thing for it following their promotion to my eyes. He's a quality batsman who has proven himself time and again (10,000 test runs at well over 50 now).

Somerset have signed Alviro Peterson as their overseas player for the T20 this year. A step down from some of the signings of recent years, but I guess they wanted someone who they feel can be relied to be about for the whole campaign and to avoid the near farce of getting last years overseas pro!

Good signing for Derbys. Important to remember that WI play Tests in April and May when a lot of Champ cricket is played though. Unless he's planning a Test retirement of course.

At 38 it must be coming soon but it's hard to tell with Chanderpaul. With his style of batting and temperament he could keep going for another year or two yet. It'll be a big blow for the Windies batting line-up whenever he gives way that's for sure.

Bit late on this but Worcs have signed Thilan Samaweera(sp) as their overseas player for the entire season.
I'd have preferred to get Hughesy back, but seen as that was unlikley, this is a good solid signing. Hopefully we might be able to snare Hughes for the T20's

Manager, Giles White added; “Adam will add competition with the gloves and comes with an impressive first class batting average. We have experienced, first-hand, that he is a young player with great ability and we hope that he is able to fulfil his potential and build on what has been a bright start to his career.
“Contrary to reports, no assurances or promises have been made to Adam but we are delighted that he has chosen to pursue his career at Hampshire.

Bates had a brilliant year last season, i think he played in every game though, so Wheater could be brought in to cover when he is injured? Can see Wheater and Bates both playing in the same side though. We really do have a great crop of youngsters, Vince, Briggs, Dawson, Wood, Bates and now Wheater, mix that in with Carberry, Adams, Ervine and Dimi, really think we will win div 2 this year
