I find the notion of being labelled "Celtic" actually insulting. However I am Irish and couldn't really care if England won or lost.

What's the problem being described as Celtic?

I resent the Celtic label as well actually. It means nothing to Irish people. Its usually used by the English to lump Scots Irish and Welsh into the one bucket.
Or used by the (mostly) Welsh and Scots (less so) to coat tail Irish successes.

I find being called Celtic no more insulting than being called European, but I identify with neither of them. I haven’t voted because I don’t fall into any of the categories. It all depends who’s playing, who’s the underdog etc.

Celts aren't really a group of people anymore are they? As Boyne said,it's a term used to lump the Scots,Welsh and Irish together.

Afternoon all...
Try as I might to resist joining v2 after 606 shut down, here I am, doing it all again.
Fantastic to see many familiar names already... I have even missed the continual Wumming from 606 too. How's me old mate TGG? Still frothing?
I'm English so naturally want England win, but will always show appreciation and applaud good play from whoever.
Was actually cheering Wales on against SA and Scotland against Argentina so I don't think I am too one eyed.

Re: The ABE test.
I don't think I'd go as far as saying I'm an ABE supporter but would definitely support the other Celts against England most of the time. Being from Ulster I feel the closest affinity with the Scots out of the other home nations and lived in N Wales for a while and although I love it when we beat the Welsh I generally support them against England. I've nothing against England personally but I enjoy the rivalry with them and the banter when they lose .

Portnoy's complaint, you see allot more people would like England if it werent for your media.
England fans are great, its just your media and papers are revoltingly one sided and lack any objectivity.
It's actually quite sickening to listen to ITV.

The Celts were never really that much of a group. Even linguistically they're divided into p-Goidelic (Welsh, Cornish, Breton) and c-Goidelic (Irish, Scots Gaelic, Manx).

I have to say that the English media is pretty sickening (particularly Sky Rugby).
But then I have also dipped into the Irish Independent, the Western Mail, Scrum V etc. and find no solace there either.

Being called a celt doesn't bother me at all.
Well fancy that, not all of us are in agreement about the term. It's amazing we can all come together under the ABE umbrella. What a truly unifying experience!

I'm an England fan and support England first and foremost. After then, I'm as pragmatic as I can with my support. What result will best help England? If the match will have no effect on England I move on to supporting who I picked to win on SportsGuru.
Canada are my least favourite team now, because I was doing an accumulator on every game of the World Cup and they ruined it by beating Tonga (same reason Murray is by least favourite tennis player). Anyone But Canada (and Murray).

Grossly, deeply shockingly rubbish isn't it - especially on the rugby front.
Makes most of the English media look entirely moderate.
Still that's the cross the English have to bear for being the root of all evil on these isles.

Yeah I remember that one too.
Went something along the lines of 80% showed some celtic heritage, 19% showing Saxon, Roman & Viking, the remaining 1% is other. The borders of those groups is also very blurred as most people have mixed heritages.
I guess the story here is that before the romans showed up and "created" Eng, Ire, Scot & Wales we were all a mixture of celtic/gaelic tribes covering the whole of the islands and quite content killing each other. over turnips and sacred trees.
Not like now is it

So in fact what Portnoy is suggesting is that 80% of English people are ABE?

Apart from the fact that I support Irish rugby and pretty much always have (along with the French).
I think that you misconstrue me. I'm trying to assess the ABE opinion. I was just alarmed that some Irish punters seem to not to want to be included under the Celtic banner.

Re: The ABE test.
Portnoy I have voted. I picked "I'm Celtic and would prefer the best team to win irrespective"
However I find the term "Celtic" is dismissive which dilutes my countries achievements. I used get sick to death of hearing on old 606 about how "Celtic" teams had won X amount of Grandslams and Heineken Cups and all that.
We have a domestic league together with Wales, Italy and Scotland but I'd ask not to be labelled as a "Celt".
I have no more affiliation with Wales or Scotland than with France or England. If Ireland didn't win the 6 Nations this year I was glad it was England. I think there is an Anyone But England attitude amongst many fans and a strong English side is in some ways very good for Northern Hemisphere rugby.

Re: The ABE test.
I understand your point, stag, but I don't see anything wrong with the term celt.
From a points scoring perspective on achievements, you're right, but we all do that to some extent (even going as far as celebrating an NH rugby victory over the SH... that's stretching things a little, isn't it?)

2 teams - Wales and whoever is playing England. Although I find that is really hard when it's NZ or SA playing England in which case I'm ambivalent.

Re: The ABE test.
Grey, I know its not meant as offensive or anything just a term I don't buy into it. I like the underdog to win but I don't do the NH or SH thing either. I like New Zealand and would be quite happy for them to beat France or England in a knockout match. On the other hand I'm not a fan of this SA team and would prefer another team to beat them. In a few years that may all change.
