Very sad news indeed if true. Rory has been in the form of his life. Lets hope Cronin can step up to the mark..

Playing the best rugby of his life....after his brother going home at the last world cup too. Feel so bad for him. Hope he's not injured for too long!
Massive opportunity for Cronin though. Let's hope he takes it.
Who gets called up? Sherry? Did any other hooker go to Carlton House in August aside from Fla, Best, Cronin and Varley? Fairly sure not....gonna be hard to come in now and learn all the calls ... again, massive opportunity for whoever gets the chance though.

Did not seem like he was a man suffering from a broken collar bone, I would wait for the official announcement.

I agree to an extent, I have read this on the planet rugby forum, but haven't seen anything official yet, however, isn't it night time in New Zealand now anyway?Cymroglan wrote:Did not seem like he was a man suffering from a broken collar bone, I would wait for the official announcement.
So I would assume something more will come out in the morning over there.

Sherry and Kyriacou I think are the only options. It seems like his tournament is over though.

I really hope this isn't true.
It would be heartbreaking for him and awful for Ireland too.

Sometimes the rumours are true, sometimes not. For Carter they were true; either way I'd be surprised to see him against Wales.

Awful news for Best and Ireland. Before the tournament we were talking about the strength at hooker and arguing which of Flannery and Best would be starting. A few weeks on and suddenly we're looking very thin in that department.

Always horrible to see a player unavailable through injury, whats his replacements like - which I guess are your 3rd and 4th choice now what with Flannery out as well.

Sad news. The increasing injury list is representative of the way pro rugby is getting increasingly attritional.

The injury sustained by Rory Best, feared to be a broken collarbone, during today’s win over Italy is the most pressing concern for the Irish management as they turn their attentions to next weekend’s quarter-final against Wales.

Ah jeez. That's such a shame. I hope he makes a full and speedy recovery. Sorry to hear his tournament had to finish like that.
Just a note, during the match commentary (on ITV) the medical staff were quoted as saying the injury to his collar bone "...was not looking good" at the time.

Wales 3rd choice Hooker (at least before the WC) vs Ireland 3rd choice Hooker in the 1/4s then.

Apparently O'Connell has a hamstring problem also, so it will be interesting to see what develops there.

Yes, but that pre-dated todays game Alyn. Only time he's trained fully since the Australia match was on Friday, which makes his performance all the more impressive.

No the reason they took him off in the 58th minute was because he aggrivated it apparently.Notch wrote:Yes, but that pre-dated todays game Alyn. Only time he's trained fully since the Australia match was on Friday, which makes his performance all the more impressive.

Pre-cautionary I would imagine. I would be pretty adamant that he will play. Talking about POC btw.

Very reliable team source in New Zealand tells me "99% certain" Rory Best is out of World Cup q final with shoulder injury. Mike Sherry?

Collarbone gone, tournament over I'm afraid. And the front row issues may not end there.....

Gutted for Rory, think he's been a stand out player for Ireland in this campaign. Horrible way for your tournament to end.

Re: Rory best broken collar bone
I don't like to see any player injured, I like Rory Best, I feel sorry for him, he has been playing so well it is tragic that he has been injured just as he was getting back to his very best form. I am only passing on information for the forum posters that I am coming across.DOD wrote:Alyn is only projecting a desire rather than having any knowledge of why poc was taken off
We won't know what's what until the morning in New Zealand, but any information we come acros is worth talking about.
Wales have a few injury worries ahead of the Ireland game, Hook, Lydiate, Shane Williams etc, so lets see how both teams have come out of their physical games against Italy and Fiji.
everything I haveread via other forums, the news agencies and twitter, points to the fact rory was taken straight to hospital when he came off and has a collarbone injury, O'Connell aggrivated his groin strain and was replaced in the 58th minute which was precautionery so it didnt get worse, and Tony Leen the Irish Examiner sports editor has tweeted that there might be another Irish front row injury.

Who knows alyn. All reports have noted poc was taken off as precautionary. Haven't seen any reports about another fr injury unless tony buckley stubbed his big toe

Feck this is terrible for Rory and for Ireland. Best has been in the best form of his career and this is a massive blow, especially with Flannery out as well.
Cronin and Varley will have to step up to the plate big time.
I have faith that they can.

I agree, it is a crying shame but I think an injured player has to physically leave NZ (apart from a NZ player obviously) before a replacement was allowed. It seems very petty if that is the case, though.tecphobe wrote:If its true very sad for rory after such a fine tournamnet and finally nailing a starting place. .... but obviously hand them over one-handedly (to make up a word). He wouldn't be able to fold them neatly first, either. Or shake hands while similtaneously handing the jersey over. A good idea but, sadly, the whole thing is a minefield.

Michael Corcoran had this to say on Twitter;
I'm optimistic because he's actually traveling with the squad, reporting for RTE.

Rory Best has a sprain to his AC joint, doubtful for the game v Wales but not ruled out of RWC 2011, further update 2moro #rterugby #rwc

Re: Rory best broken collar bone
I'm hoping Rory can shake this off. Not only has he been in the form of his life, he has been one of the most consistent performers at this World Cup.
I shudder to think what we will be like without him. On Sunday after he came off we lost a scrum against the head, had a misfire in the line-out and our previously sound scrum was visibly wobbling.

Re: Rory best broken collar bone
Positive news there Notch.
I think we have to faith in Cronin and Varley against Wales. Cronin did ok when he came on I thought and Varley has plenty of big match experience with Munster so he can't be that bad.
Best has been a massive part of our forward performances so far though so it would be a great boost if his tournament isn't over.

My brother did something to his A/C joint and he was never the same, it was always a niggle and a weak tackle shoulder for him, obviously he didn't get the same care or treatment Rory will and Rory's is only strained.
I hope the lad is living in an ice chamber at the moment!
