Not a fight i want made
Watched the Martinez fight today and I really don't see what all the fuss is about.
After the fight the presenters immediate talks turn to a fight with Manny or Floyd. Both pretty much max out at WW, and they are small welterweights at that. They are miles apart in p4p stakes and the only reason Martinez has even a small chance is because of the physical advantages he would hold over them. If/when Manny or Floyd are beaten it would be nice to know that it isn't because they are fighting at a weight they are not comfortable at. Froch would beat both of them, does not make him the better fighter.
If this fight somehow does get made Manny and Floyd pitch shut outs against Martinez... Too careless defensively and can't pot shot his way to victory against these two, despite his physical advantages. Just not good enough.

I would agree with you on Martinez. Have never been convinced hes anywhere near the elite level of Mayweather or Pacquiao and feel his popularity has led to him being a bit overrated.
However he still represents probably the biggest vaguely realistic possibility to the big two outside of them fighting each other so its definately a fight I would like to see. There isnt really anyone in the welterweight division to properly challenge Mayweather or Pacquaio so unfortunately its seems that giving away some size is the only way to get competitive fights. I would agree that both beat Martinez though provided it doesnt take place above light middleweight.

I'm not sure he is even the biggest threat. Khan would pose more problems to both of them before being stopped in both fights...
He would outweigh them both by around 20lb each come fight night as I don't think he would do 154, despite making noises to suggest he can.

I think Khan would be a credible fight but would still say that having to step up a weight to face Martizez as opposed to facing a light welter stepping up would be a greater challenge.
Given the stage Martinez is at in his career I would think he would be willing to do whats neccessary to try make a lower weight limit in order to secure the kind of financial opportunity Mayweather or Pacquiao would deliver. Theres also the potential for a catchweight scenario. But I think if Mayweather/Pacquiao were absolutely confident they would beat him then they would be willing to explore the possibility of fighting him and that doesnt appear to be the case. I have some sympathy with them because its at the stage where in order to to get a really competitive fight (at least on paper) they would need to sacrifice some weight advantages and its difficult to realistically expect them to take on a tough fight against a guy like Martinez expecting to be outweighed significantly.
I wouldnt entirely rule out Mayweather making a move to light middle in the future especially if Alvarez continues to grow as a name or the potential winner of Cotto v Margarito might be tempting for him.
