The OFFICIAL Luke Donald - Is he arrogant thread
Rather than watch a wum clock up another 100 post thread of people taking the bait, why don't we discuss the merits or otherwise of the latest World Number 1 here.
Personally I don't think Luke is arrogant, I think he's refreshingly honest, has had an awesome year mainly due to his laser like iron play and sublime short game and is a worthy replacement at the top of the world rankings to to Mr Westwood, purely co-incidentally of course, the board WUM's previous target, who in turn replaced the WUM's object of affection/love interest at the top of the rankings. Hence the subsequent inane stupidity and ramblings from our resident board clown.
JAS
"I've played better than anyone else over a two-year period and no-one has been as consistent as I have."
"I've beaten the top players week in, week out, and other than maybe one or two guys, I've earned double the amount of points than most players."
"Obviously it has been a great year and I'm not only at the top of the world, I'm increasing my lead as well."
My Goodness when was the last time we saw a sports man blow his trumpet this much? Must be the inferiority complex of not winning a major. We heard Westwood try to debase majors when he was number 1 and now Luke blowing his trumpet. Hello Luke where are the majors and the big number of wins year in year out?
Martin Kaymer would be too classy to make a comment like this. I missed him as number 1. He was humble and more to the point a major winner.

Well put JAS. Personally can't seeany arrogance in what Lukes said at all. He has done nothing but say what is true and speak on facts that any golf fan can get by looking at the OGWR site likewise on www.PGATour.com or www.europeantour.com .
He is the most consistent player on the planet for last 2 years and said WUM said where are his mulitple wins over the year(s) clearly he is not bright enough to have noticed he won Madrid last year, followed up by adding WGC Matchplay, PGA at Wentworth, The Barclays Scottish. So 4 wins in the last 12 months not bad from an average player as said WUM seems to think!

Re: The OFFICIAL Luke Donald - Is he arrogant thread
It makes me laugh that we bemoan the English guys for not having the major winning mentality but then we have Luke showing the belief and confidence that will help him bag a major and some (a WUM granted) call him arrogant.
Give these guys a break!
Re the WUM, I believe over the period Luke is referring to he has won exactly the same number of majors as a certain Mr Woods and in fact only 1 less than anyone else in the world....

Re: The OFFICIAL Luke Donald - Is he arrogant thread
I agree i don't think he is arrogant, the fact that he is the front runner in both money lists, just shows how consistent he has been.
The only thing he has is total belief in his ability, which everyone at that level of the game has.
Interestingly he is also an excellent role model for the discussion on the GPS thread, he is by no means short compared to club golfers but in comparison to many of his compatriots he is always taking a club to 2 more into many greens. He never seems to try to match up, just hits his distance to a high degree on accuracy, and putts to a very high standard.

Luke Donald: Best golfer in the world over the past 13 months, no ifs, ands or buts.
Always modest, self-effacing, but good to see him become more assertive (hopefully not defensive) when asked about his Number One status. Almost three full points ahead of Number Two. I would bet he'll be Number One this time next year, though he'll have a ton of points to "defend".

It pleases me to say this but as a duplicate threadhas been created and one that does not act as an insult to donalds status I am locking this thread as no need to discuss in both

not half as arrogant as a board who thinks its acceptable to treat people the way we have Keizo by shutting his thread down in the manner we did.

He seems a pretty thick skinned individual Mac. I'm sure he'll get over his joke of a thread being closed

I agree with Mac on this one; if Keizo makes a point worth debating, debate him. If not, ignore him. Pretty simple really.

I'm all up for ignoring him (as I was) and all up for free speech, but there is a limit.
An MP couldn't walk into the House of Commons with a valid point but starting with 'you're all pr*cks'. Which is essentially what Keizo does.
His threads are debatable? Possibly.
Inflammatory? Definitely.

I can't think of anyone else on here like that Kwini.
There are some who say things others don't agree with but generally you can at least see the hint of sarcasm. Even with Mac! That's not the case with Keizo. He's simply trying to incite.
I'm not sure I follow the cravat thing? Is he German??

Again Mac you miss the point of what the moderation team set out at the begining of this forum being opened and that was to avoid what we used to get ond old 606 with having multiple threads on the same topic. So a decision was made and i'll accept full responsibility for that decision to close down the thread as we didn't need 2 of them. The reason I chose that one to close down and not this was the inflammatory way Keizo come across with his WUM posting of such topics and I think were all a little bored of seeing insults fly around from posters over such things. So feel free to fling insults, PM's or any other such things my way for disagreeing with me, but I do seem to remember you yourself have taken offence in past to the way Keizo has opened some debates. Now how about we stay on topic at hand from now on

Re: The OFFICIAL Luke Donald - Is he arrogant thread
For want of us MOD's been thought to be seen as some sort of post apocolyptic gestapo type agency not allowing all the chance to speak even those that look to incite, I have merged Keizo's thread into JAS's so both points can be discussed in one place

Re: The OFFICIAL Luke Donald - Is he arrogant thread
Luke is absolutely the most consistent golfer this past year - the numbers prove that.
But, many look to World #1's to win majors and he has won exactly the same number of majors this year as Tiger Woods, Lee Westwood and myself. I suspect that's why some in the press and many a fan are less than awed by his golfing display this past year.
Player of the year? For my money it's Rory. His comeback and domination at Congressional was amazing given his flame out at Augusta. He's got some metal fortitude.

Luke Donald arrogant ? Methinks probably not, more confident in his abilities and comfortable in his skin.
Still only 33 and can see that swing working nicely for another 5-10 year easily, whether his putter will stay as hot is another matter entirely.
Donald would be my player of the year, Rory has been incredibly inconsistent over the year but for sure bagged one of the 4 tournaments he wanted.

Sr,
In that case, the ranking system needs to be changed such that Charl, Rors, DC and Keegs fight it out for Number One. I'll go for Charl.
Drives me crazy that golf goes out of its way to use the owgr's as golf's currency and then incites public opinion against Number Ones when they don't like the way the new math turned out.

With you 100% on this one Kwini the rankings are the fairest way to work out No1 and thats what Luke is but something that people always complain about when majors are not in the No1's locker.
There is no way any of this years major winners deserve the No1 tag, but of the 4 the most consistent is Charl.
As for player of year again I agree Luke should win it but I feel the tour will give it to Braddely

Thats a bit extreme isnt it Kwini ? I dont think "golf" feels like that at all. Probably the fact that two of the guys who have held the number 1 spot have been English, when England has had quite a long wait for a major, has maybe served to put a bit more focus on the matriculations this year.
I personally dont dispute either Westwoods or Donalds right to be seen a the number 1 golfer, whether I would have preferred to see them win majors rather than hit the top spot is another discussion altogether and to be honest Id probably come down on the side of the majors.
Its just an interesting debate, it doesnt have to devalue what Donald and Westwood have done just because someone feels winning majors is a huge part of a golfers legacy.

Re: The OFFICIAL Luke Donald - Is he arrogant thread
Kwin - I'm not suggesting the ranking system is flawed. Luke's #1 is well earned and his accountant also will also attest to his success! He finished very high in just about every tournament he competed in.
But I'm not of the opinion that the world #1 should always be player of the year. What I saw Rory do was just amazing, and his feat (to me at least) was so impressive I give him the nod.
Both had great years anyway you look at it.

Re: The OFFICIAL Luke Donald - Is he arrogant thread
Digs,
Perhaps I should rephrase that by offering "American golf", the media, the Tours. Donald gets more respect than Westwood did but that's probably due to lw1 not being a Tour member.
Even Kaymer's ascent to Number One was only accepted grudgingly here.
TW will have to play incredibly badly over the next five years to dispel any public notion that he's not Numero Uno. Who knows, that faith/mantra might prove well-placed, but until events dictate otherwise, Luke Donald is a very worthy Number One.

PS: Clearly World Number One and POTY are two entirely separate discussions.
Luke would be World #1, but PGA Tour #1 is still up for grabs I'd say.

Fair enough Kwini, I think most golf followers are savvy enough to know Luke has had a great year and is a worthy number one. And im sure most golf fans would also love to see a guy like Luke win majors as well!

Re: The OFFICIAL Luke Donald - Is he arrogant thread
Donald has had a great year, and is a worthy #1. Obviously some people will say that he's only keeping it warm for the return of TW, but until he starts looking like a decent golfer again, Luke will be #1 for a long time. As far as arrogance goes, I think he's pretty much the least arrogant modern-day player I have seen.
At the end of last year I couldn't see anyone touching Kaymer. I thought he had such a good game and could really dominate, but it appears that his obsession with trying to hit the draw to master Augusta (no pun intended) has backfired spectacularly, as his game seems to be in a really bad way at present.
Westwood deserved to get to #1 too. He had some great results to get there, but he just can't seem to turn it on when it really matters. His driving/ballstriking is up there with the all-time greats... it's just a shame that there are better putters playing in monthly stablefords up and down the country every weekend.
Of course, all of these players pale in comparison to Ryo Ishikawa...
