Debuts Empty Debuts

Post by The Boss Thu 06 Oct 2011, 11:28 am

Morning lads,

As some of you know I made mention a few weeks ago of a charity fight night that I had coming up. Well the fight was a few Saturday nights ago and to anyone interested i was beat on a majority decision. I have to say that with all the training that I did and all my years of football trainng, no matter how hard it is, there is nothing that prepares you for a boxing match. Even with the result being what it was I would love to keep training and maybe have a few more fights to see how it goes. (My excuse for the loss being that I was over-matched and was fighting a Fella with a lot more experience than me haha).

In light of this, I just want to ask the question;

Which fighter's career got off to a less than perfect start only for them to turn it all around?

And have any of you been in the same situation?

Cheers

The Boss

I'd forgot about this, unlucky mate, but you certainly didn't disgrace yourself!

What entrance music did you plump for, in the end?

Bernard Hopkins is one, in answer to your question.

Forgot to give a couple of my own examples, as well. I believe the likes of JMM and Sergio Martinez didn't get off to the best starts although I could be wrong.

Went for something a bit different, Fists. One of my cousins is in a pipe band so I had him lead me out to the ring playng the bagpipes. All a bit of craic and in aid of a good cause.

Nice one. Any moments of success in the fight? What tactics did you go for?

I think Liam Walsh lost his first 10 amatuer fights.

First up, Boss, very well done for your effort and for your commitment to keep going.

There are quite a few stellar fighters whose careers didn't get off to a flyer. Hopkins, for example, lost his first.

Perhaps the most notable would be Henry Armstrong. The pick of many as one of the two greatest fighters of all time, Armstrong lost his first fight, one or two others shortly afterward, and took quite a while before he gave us even a hint of the lofty heights he was to climb later on.

Me.

I lost my first fight, but I didn't let it get to me, and turned it around to be the bitter, lonely, borderline alcoholic that is tapping away at the keyboard now....

Stayed orthodox throughout. I could have done a lot more training but all of the sparring i did never prepared me for the energy you can lose in a minute and a half haha. I was the aggressor throughout with my opponent boxing me on the backfoot. I knew I'd have to walk him down as I knew his jab was quicker and better than mine. Best round for me was the 2nd when I caught him with a few sweet right hooks. Unfortunately, the best shot I caught him with knocked his gum shield into the crowd and he got time to recover when i would have wanted to pressure him and keep attacking. However, I thought it was a fair result in the end.

Cheers, Windy. I'm not in bad company as it stands so far.

Bob, I haven't turned bitter yet but I could have ya cornered on the other 2.

My playground record stands at 4-0-0 (2 ko) so unfortunately i'm unable to pass on any words that'd be of any use as i'm not familiar with losing...

I have no examples to add for your question Boss but just wanted to say I'm sorry to hear about your loss (so to speak).

Keep at it mate. You've metaphorically got more balls then me, unless you have three, and seem like a pleasant, humble bloke when telling us about it. Hats off, Sir. thumbsup

Thanks lads. Coxy, thanks for the advice. Taking a whle off training now as i sprained both my thumbs in the fight an have a few Gaelic matches to concentrate on so when i get started back then I'll definitely try that.

Another thing I noticed that i wasn't expecting was the heat off the over ring lights. Was unreal!

Il Gialloblu, I,m gonna stick at it but for now i think it'll just be for charity and fundraising nights but I could change my minda after another few fights haha. (if My success rate picks up Wink

Alexis Argeullo if not mentioned already.

I think I read somewhere that Harry Greb lost one of his early fights (newspaper decision). He did fight in Black and White though so was probabley rubbish Wink

Not sure if this makes you feel better or worse but believe Johnny Nelson lost something like his first six fights.

The stand out has to be Hopkins.

So you can continue fighting and have a career like B-Hop or you can run the risk of having a career like Johnny Nelson.

Toshiaki Nishioka lost 2 of his first 8 including one by KO and has only lost twice since in 40 odd fights enjoying a pretty successful career.
