Wind Tips
As we're now into the Autumn and Winter season, and reading about JAS and Shanks down the south west today in a 4-club wind etc. It started me thinking about the problems I have into the wind, as my normal shot off the tee tends to baloon and the natural fade gets exagerated, which loses distance
Whats the best way of hitting a low penetrating shot under the wind

Re: Wind Tips
Wind tips definately avoid protein rich foods and curry....
Other than that! Club up, grip down and inch maybe more if comfortable with ball postion just slightly back of where you usually have it; hands ahead at address and swing smooth but no more than 3/4 length back and through. That's how I was taught many moons ago and having played links for years found it works a treat.
Also try to perfect hitting your driver off the deck, again you'll need to grip down and address the ball slightly open allow for a fade with the club but the low flight and and run produced with this shot is ideal for winter conditions.
Another shot I like is the one el Tigre used to play is the stinger long iron or fairway wood from the tee

Cheers Mav, it's the gripping down I wouldn't have thought of because your head tells you that you need to give it the kitchen sink to get anywhere because of the conditions

Re: Wind Tips
Doc , the gripping down helps to control the clubhead and makes it harder to get overly active with the hands, plus the most important thing to remember is the smooth 3/4 swing, because if you do as you say go with the natural instinct of hitting it hard, this will in fact impart more spin onto the ball causing it to rise be blown back at you. Whereas gripping down and swinging smooth will reduce the spin giving you lower ball flight you require

Re: Wind Tips
If you go at it you'll just put more spin on it causing it to balloon in the air and go nowhere.

The saying I always use try and plant in my brain when its windy and before each shot "in the breeze swing with ease" then execute it.

Re: Wind Tips
Good advice from Mav
Also
The stronger the wind the slower the swing.
Set your scoring targets much higher, scores go up a great deal in a high wind and folk lose heart and give up.
Put another 10 shots on your projected score and keep positive.

Cheers doon I find avoiding the protein rich foods does work...
But on a serious not I think the point you make of remembering to adjust scoring targets is one peole always fail to factor in. In a strong wind the Par of the course on the card may well be the same but SSS/CSS will go up so don't get dispondent at being a couple over handicap eveyone else will that or worse too

Re: Wind Tips
Yep, all correct advice.
The simple physics is...... the harder you hit the ball, the more spin you put on it. The more spin you put on it, the more the ball will climb up into the air.
Get into the mindset that there is nothing wrong with taking a 3 iron to hit the ball 125 yards. 3/4 backswings, curtailed follow throughs, hands ahead of the ball and commit to the shot otherwise you can easily come out of it and lose it to the right.
It's great fun playing in the wind....enjoy!!

Re: Wind Tips
I thought we were thinking about having a tips 'sticky' for quick reference. Things like this are invaluable for many, as we tend to forget basics at times, and the Cat 1 and 2 players especially are a great help.
Wind
Ball above your feet
Ball below your feet
Greenside bunkers
fairway bunkers
Avoiding paying at the bar

Just out of interest, what do you say if someone replies 'Which shores?'.
