India vs England, 5th ODI Debate
First topic message reminder :
So the final ODI is about to start shortly.
Changes for both sides. India have opted for Manoj Tiwary in place of the out of form Parthiv Patel. That should mean Gambhir will open, at last.
Graeme Swann is back for England, but the not so happy news is that Kevin Pietersen is out injured, their by opening up a place for Ian Bell.
England have won the toss, and they have opted to chase.
Will India complete the whitewash? Will England manage to salvage something from this series?
Lets debate.

Jadeja gone, Bell with a fine catch at short mid wicket and Patel has a wicket. Daft shot that, with Dhoni going so well surely just knocking it around for singles would have been the better option...

Sweet six hitting from Dhoni, he really is in good nick in this series.
England doing ok though, and will be happy if Dhoni goes soon.

good work from Cook and England in that over, Dhoni only facing one ball.

Ashwin gone now, chipping Patel straight to long on, not too sure what he was doing there. Bit of a poor innings from Ashwin, didn't get Dhoni on strike enough.

Dhoni can do no wrong with the bat in this series ...losing partners though and England have done well to keep India under reasonable control.
If Dhoni doesn't slaughter the last few overs the target could be gettable...won't be easy though, this is not one of your 300 pitches...

Oh I know, as a nation we are terrible for it. We really need to move away from such an outlook.

250 is looking easy.....and they must settle for 250...without trying to maximize too much

lousy keeping from Kieswetter again, but that's probably the end of a very good day's work with the ball for Patel: 2-39 in 8 overs.

i wish we would. lets be more like Aussie and celebrate our success.
i'm a fine one to talk i know but i love it when we do well and i hate how we happily forget and ignore all achivements the second it goes badly.
Nothing about this poorly scheduled tour can take away from what's been achieved in recent times.

Absolutely sickening isn't it. He never waxed lyrical about the likes of KP when he was demolishing the Indian attack to the four corners of England this summer.
Re: India vs England, 5th ODI Debate
Kieswetter with yet more lousy keeping, and Meaker has taken a lot of tap there, just couldn't get the yorkers in and Dhoni takes full advantage...

Fine fifty , Dhoni (Again!)
21 off the over and it is starting to look like 270 after all ...
This is what I feared when Dhoni came in. You have to just admire the man.

Kumar well caught at long-on, but if you were going to bowl Patel surely Bresnan should have bowled the previous over?

Re: India vs England, 5th ODI Debate
Patel has actually gone a long way to proving me wrong with the ball in this match.
However, consistency is one thing he needs to add, as is the case with many of the fringe members of this team.
He also needs to back that performance up with a good display with the bat to show his real all-round credentials.

Fine catch by Bairstow ! Probably should have kept Patel on earlier ...

ah well 273 isn't impossible by any means, but we badly messed up at the end there. Cook didn't get his bowlers right at all...

272 to win...I fear that may be 10-20 runs too many for us. Need a good start.
Catch you guys after the break.

and I agree with the general sentiment, the way England are cosying up to the Indians is really annoying to see.

Re: India vs England, 5th ODI Debate
If Dhoni wasn't playing this series we might have won a couple, there is literally nothing you can do about him at the moment, crazy to think how bad he looked at the start of their tour of England. Patel bowling the last over was possibly a mistake but the same could easily have happened no matter who bowled.

Re: India vs England, 5th ODI Debate
271 is too many I think.
That is why I wanted an all out (Finn) attack on Dhoni when he first came in...might not have worked but the last ten overs have gone (predictably) for lots...so it would surely have been worth trying?
Can't honestly see England chasing this in a fit...240, 250 might have been a chance...ah well : congrats India
(Feel free to prove me wrong, England - I won't complain)

Re: India vs England, 5th ODI Debate
Fantastic from Dhoni, but let's not forget he is getting these runs against a 2nd rate bowling attack. He would get more plaudits from me if it were against the likes of Broad and Anderson.
Re: India vs England, 5th ODI Debate
yeah he is and he's very good at doing it in his own conditions.
he didnt do as well in the world cup against eng as they were stronger.
still, these kids will learn from this.

Re: India vs England, 5th ODI Debate
still England's best bowling performance of the tour IMO. Patel bowled well, as did Finn. Bresnan looked to have got some energy back, while Meaker looked pretty promising I think, but would've needed a clam head helping him out in that last over.

Re: India vs England, 5th ODI Debate
Fantastic finish there from India, and MS Dhoni is just taking his ODI game to aanther level.
But the slow start and that mid-innings collapse means India have put up a good total, not an impossible one by any means. If Kieswetter gets going at he top(he defenitly should perform with the bat, his keeping, regardless os some stunning catches, throughout the series, has been terrible), and Cook and Trott play big, then England do have a chance. The Indian spinners should expect some dew trouble as well.
May be Ashwin's powerplay bowling skills should be put to good use at the top.

Fists, Dhoni's batting revival had in fact started during the 3rd test in England. And he continued his fine batting form throughout the ODI series in England as well, before taking it to the next level in the return series.Fists of Fury wrote:Fantastic from Dhoni, but let's not forget he is getting these runs against a 2nd rate bowling attack. just like Eng rose to #1 against a second rate India bowling and batting earlier this year

Re: India vs England, 5th ODI Debate
Broad was injured during that ODI series too, was he not? Know what you're saying though...
WIth regard to Kieswetter's keeping, let's not forget that Dhoni was utterly abysmal behind the stumps in England, and it can be pretty tough keeping in foreign conditions where the bounce and pace is different.

To be fair, we would likely have panned India regardless of who was playing. In our own conditions and in that kind of form England Test side is nigh on unstoppable.
Re: India vs England, 5th ODI Debate
England were missing Tremlett and Trott for most of the series in England too anu
Don't want to start the whole "weakened team" argument. For me England outplayed India this summer and have been outplayed here.

Zaheer, yes, given how toothless India's bowling looked at times. Sehwag, no, his record on pitches which do a bit for the seamers (NZ, SA and Eng) is awful.

Re: India vs England, 5th ODI Debate
Sehwag did really well...king pair. He doesn't have the temperament when the ball is moving around.
Zaheer would have helped but 1 man doesn't swing a series when so many of our batsmen were in form.
Solid start from England here *mockers alert*
