I'm not too sure he would have, look back to 2007 vs France when the pressure was on, Carter got injured, 2011 huge pressure on the All Blacks with the RWC on their shores and guess what Carter gets injured, again!

All I know is B A T H have yet another World Cup winning fly half and I'd pick him over Carter everytime.

It wouldn't surprise me if NZ try to hold onto Donald he'd only be 31 at the next world cup.

Donald only barely got it, Carter would have too. Even if he'd missed they would have covered it up

I have to say I was pleased for Donald being that his soon to be a Bath man, but I'd rather have DC on Baths books.

Shame Bath haven't yet got their world cup winning fly half yet....

I expect that he'll soak up so much praise and admiration his head will explode. He is certainly having second thoughts about going to Bath....

Yeah that was great. Wrapped for Donald actually getting the chance to redeem in the best possible way after being the most slated AB/ scapegoat for many a year.

On a rugby show last night they showed a cartoon pic from months ago where someones having a night mare about Donald stepping up to kick the winning goal in the WC final...classic.

And man what that will do for his confidence at Bath who can put aside all the worries about performing under pressure any more. Fairy tale ending for him...

Frankly Carter will be lucky to regain his place. Three players have now worn the 10 shirt since Carter's last appearance and even with my maths that makes Carter at least 4th in the pecking order. He may as well retire now with some dignity and whilst we can still remember him as a half decent player.

disagree... the only issue with Donald was his being suspect under pressure situations in test matches. He's a naturally confident player and rushes things- that caused problems in Hong Kong where composure was required. Even noticed both mcCaw and Henry comment specifically how 'composed' he was. I mean McCaw's words post test were something like 'hats off to beaver, MAN was he composed'

Other than that he's got all the skills, has pace and will take the line on, can kick very well and from all accounts is a very popular and loyal team man. Amazing what 50 minutes of rugby can do...

Wilkinson was shocking this world cup. Amazing how some teams drag out every last remaining drop out of a player before sacking them.
Donalds short cameo was ten times the effort of wilkos cup. Shame these great players have to end their fabulous careers this way.

kind of proves nothing. this is from the only game where I saw him live in action but thought this piece of skill, albeit not a huge blunder, does not imply that he's up there with the likes of DC, LM or NE (amongst other famous NZ flyhalves that are still playing). overall he did well in scoring the penalty but appart from that? am certainly not wasting my time looking for other examples and for the sake of argument will give him the benefit of the doubt and wait for all his AB class to help bath to win the HC

Wilko's World cup was a bit of a disaster, admitted, but the great man won in 03 away from home and in 07 i really feel that we got the true measure of the man dragging an imploding England through to the World cup final in a show of great guts and nous.

In addition Jonny Wilkinson is an ideal sportsman, not flashy or brash, but a true Corinthian, who does his not inconsiderable best and has done it over 4 World cups and although this one wasn't great, he'll have his Winners medal, and runner up medal to console him, while Dan Carter won't!! There is the measure of a true player and man. I thank you.

Well jw getting a wcup medal over dc is more a measure of being injured as i think he wouldnt have hurt our chances if he'd played.

Like oz with cooper they kept picking their 10's even though they were rubbish formwise.
At least our 10s kept stepping up and performing right down to donald who was whitebaiting two weeks before the final

Stephen Donald is a good ,steady ,Fly Half in difficult circumstances he had the game and skill set to close the RWC final down.
He has a RWC winners medal to console himself,and for the gainsayers here.
SO does Dan Carter,RWC winners medals go to the WHOLE RWC squad including the injured.
After a twelve week layoff Dan Carter will be hopefully as good as new
and is young enough.
IF he keeps his form to be there in 2015 RWC,more likely he will be mentoring his successors.
Ritchie Mc Caw is still not out of the Frame for 2015 ,but is more likely to be a back room boy then.
Certainly Players like Latimir,Sam Cane, the Braid Brothers,and Matt Todd could`nt have a better mentor.
Surgery and rest,hopefully,he will be back for 4Ns.
People were asking PRE-RWC could NZ win a RWC without DC and McCaw.
Well not the complete answer but Captain Tackles on one leg was enough .without DC to get them home Just!!!

Donald has been ripped apart for years in the NZ press but still managed to come back and show incredible composure when asked to do a job in a RWC final. He did it very well and deserves all the credit he gets. Thats said, he is not close to DC who i personally feel is one of the best players to have played the game.

How can it be said that Donald is better that Carter is beyond me, Dondald was for the All Blacks the final straw, the last chance saloon, the only one they had left with any form of international experience that they could bring in at the last minute.

Trust me IF, IF, Carter remained fit and nothing had happend to Slade, then Donald would not of even been considered for the All Blacks at all.

Donald was obviously always on Henrys list somewhere.
With the time available no one else was AB 10 material after the injuries. He'd toured with the ABs a couple of times and knew the players, pattern, expectations of an AB etc. No one within coo-ee had that experience and to play a new 10 would have been disaster under those conditions.

He was last resort and did brilliantly. We who pasted him after Hong Kong are equally praising his efforts- nature of the beast. you do well you get the praise, you have shockers, you get the insults. Way it is... ask any Wilko, Gatland, Hook, Mike Phillips etc of this tourney...
