There's a couple of Miller stories on the 'It's a funny old game' thread that you might find amusing.

Alastair Hignell - England Rugby Union fullback and Gloucs middle order bat. He played cricket with the previously mentioned Arthur Milton.
The late David Bairstow (father of Jonny) played cricket for England and Yorks plus football for Bradford City.
Arnie Sidebottom (father of Ryan) played cricket for England and Yorks plus fotbal for Manchester United.
Quite a few non internationals - most now sadly long forgotten - played both county cricket and professional football in the 1960s and earlier. One I do recall is Graham Cross who played for Leics CCC and Leicester City FC (including two losing FA Cup Final appearances).
Away from cricket - although he shares a name with one of our posters - Fred Perry was a World Number One at tennis and also a World Champion at table tennis.

Oops,
Forgot about Hignell and shame for forgetting Graham Cross. There must be more, Ian Buxton for one.
We had a thread on the 606 golf board a few years ago about the conspicuous lack of pro golfers who excelled at other sports. A couple of pro baseball players made cameo appearances on the Senior Tour but cricket has a host of versatile sportsmen. Amazing really.

A few years or more ago, Essex seamer Ian Pont (brother of the perhaps slightly better known Essex all rounder Keith) had pro baseball trials in the US but it came to nothing.
I suspect the reason for cricket in the past having ''a host of versatile sportmen'' was largely due to it being a case of needs must. A short season paying comparatively little then.

Remembered another - suspect the Corporal might know this one.
Micky Stewart (father of Alec) - Surrey and England plus Charlton Athletic.

Bob Willis was goalkeeper for Corinthian Casuals in his early years.

.... which reminds me that the late Graham Roope (Surrey and England - decent middle order bat, ordinary medium pace bowler and world class slip fielder) played in goal for Woking FC.

And Ken Taylor had a pretty good career, mainly for Huddersfield I think, plus Yorkshire and England.

Guildford - thanks - must admit this was a new one on me. I also imagine that "GRJ" would have been a pretty good goalie, particularly at horizontal full length saves.guildfordbat wrote:Remembered another - suspect the Corporal might know this one.

Chb,
Perhaps Mickey Stewart was at Charlton the same time as Derek Ufton.
Silly me, and guildford, as we both forgot Ron Tindall. Both Ufton and Tindall compounded their careers by managing as well!
