How much will his personality hurt Floyd's legacy!!!
First topic message reminder :
Simple question...We all know Merchant hates him as he did Camacho.....Majority of old historians rated Dempsey higher than Johnson probably because he was a more engaging personality....
We all know it's hard to separate the fighter from the Man....
Tyson for me should be a top 10 heavy (well around ten anyway)...But he his kind of disrespected mainly due to his unloving persona.....
People we don't like we sometimes find any reason we can to put them down....
I think Floyd is a top 10 alltime fighter but I believe he won't get the accolade mainly because of his personality....I don't have to list his achievements..
How much will Floyd's personality affect his legacy!! Sure it has to!!

Tell you this as well...Catchweight is a disgrace and how he uses it...
It's a shame Leonard hurt his eye in 82...He could've beat Hagler at 155....Spinks at 166.....
and been the greatest ever......

Re: How much will his personality hurt Floyd's legacy!!!
Floyd doesn't like 50/50 fights.
He just doesn't know in his own mind that he will beat Manny without having to get into a war.
The Mayweather's seem to be genuinely spooked by their idea that Manny is cheating.
Floyd has demonstrated his talent over and over again but outside maybe an ageing Oscar when has he not been the clear bookies favourite in a fight.

He doesn't...That's why he fought Oscar at 154....
Stay on trash talk strongy..
Don't think it looks good trashing a top atg......think you're being silly.
Manny is a great just wish he'd beat more prime meat...and kept off the catchweight menu...
Floyd doesn't like 50/50 and yet Manny is getting praise for smashing his cast-offs!!

He isnt really though, you just seem to be saying he is. Most reasonable people didnt rate his wins over Oscar or Mosely as particularly special and opponents are viewed as better wins for Mayweather.
The question posed was about Mayweathers legacy, not Pacquaios, so the answers were directed towards Mayweather as opposed to Pacquaio.

Fists of Fury wrote:Probably because they had some much bigger names on their records, Truss.
Floyd's is good, no doubt, but not in that league.
I think it's a great debate started by Truss and I agree with you FoF.
For what it's worth, my take on Floyd is that he beats Manny but if they never fight then Floyd's legacy is damaged more than Manny's, who I believe has a better record despite the contentious latter fights at catchweights and guys like Clottey.
Anyway, back to Truss's point about Floyd's personality, I think it will hurt his legacy a great deal. It's easy to admire Floyd for his greatness (and he is undoubtedly great inside the ring) but very difficult to like him. He's often booed when he fights, has stunk out arenas and despite his big ppv numbers, I think most casual fans watch him to see him lose rather than watch him to gaze at his talent.
The Ortiz fight was a good metaphor for his personality, I've no complaints with what he did as it's a fight after all, however, the unsporting nature of the act against an opponent clearly unprotected left a bitter taste.
Watching 99% of all media related appearances by Floyd leave me with that same bitter taste.
Did anybody read Gareth Davies's latest column, he places the blame of a non Manny fight solely at Floyd.

I already replied. Since then you either have a persecution complex about Floyd or are wumming at it's not particularly original.
Floyd is well respected and his personality isn't considered important now and will be even less so in the future.

Manny sure does like Mayweathers leftovers. Bet he would get with Floyds misses if they split up
I have a bit more respect for Floyd nowadays since he has started coming to fight and just sticking his shoulder in their face for 12 rounds
Manny had the guts to take on Cotto and Margarito though. Cotto was still undefeated 3 years ago. Floyd should of fought him then. 'Someones 0 has gotta go' and all that. That would been better than the snoozefest of his "fight" against De La Hoya

Oscar was well ring worn and had already been beaten twice by Shane at welter as well as other loses.
The thing is the fight was a split decision with Oscar starting great before age caught up with him. Mayweather actually had to fight and he wasn't used to it.

No I can happily avoid your threads TRUSMANN66 and I usually do however your poor attitude and insulting behaviour spills across onto many threads and I think the forum is far the worse for it.

Re: How much will his personality hurt Floyd's legacy!!!
Less of the bickering please, chaps.
Here is the FoF viewpoint:
Trussy, the article is an interesting one, and I think in the long run his persona will be forgotten and he will be recognised for his talent and achievements, HOWEVER, the fact that you say Barrera was past it when Manny beat him first time round is most definitely incorrect. He was near the top of the pound for pound tree, had toppled the seemingly invincible Hamed and had beaten Morales. That, like it or not, was a fantastic win and far outweighs any single achievement of Floyd's. Anyway, Manny isn't the subject of this article, so not quite sure why he has been brought up.
Floyd will be remembered for what he is...a truly outstanding fighter that could have held his own, and more, in any era of the sport.

Not everybody deserves to be where they are in the list Man....
Fact is the guy had lost to Jones twice as well as others...
Last I saw Jones wasn't up there with DelaHoya..
I'm not bickering per se...Nothing personal.. although I must admit someone outwardly expressing a desire to ban someone when a guest on his thread could be thought of as a little tasteless..
But hey I'm a liberal fisty mate..

For the record, to re-answer the OP, I think Floyd's attitude only damages his legacy/public perception in the short term, whilst he's still active and a personality in the boxing community. Most more dedicated boxing fans give him his dues and respect him a lot already, in the future the armchair fans will follow.

Several fighters at the top of their game have had losses to inferior fighters in the past, though, Trussy. Robinson losing to Turpin, is just one. Sometimes a fighter will have the Indian sign over them, it happens. I don't think we should be too unkind to Marco regarding the Jones losses, as he showed he was far from past it with some tremendous wins outside of those.
Re: How much will his personality hurt Floyd's legacy!!!
He didn't lose to Turpin twice.............
Great fighters tend to find a way..
But you know maybe I'm harsh on Marco....but beating Barrera at 130/135 for me isn't the same as Oscar at 154....
But we can disagree...

I know this is often used as a cliche but isn't that one of the beauties of boxing, call it Indian signs or clash of styles, but A beating B, B beating C does not mean A will beat C.

It's a good point.
To digress, what would we think of Sugar Shane losing to Forrest and Wright twice but also holding a better win over Oscar than Floyd?
