First topic message reminder :
Hi guys
Just a quick one to let you know that I have spoken with All Out Cricket regarding the amount of Surrey fans we have here at 606v2, and they're going to look to provide any Surrey related blogs/news/articles that they have to this section. Given that their office is located near to the Oval, they often chat with the Surrey guys and as such get some good interviews, so hopefully they can get some of those across here for you fellas to get your teeth into.
Cheers

Ansari, playing for Cambridge against Lancs, has just passed his previous best first class score of 41.

Corporal - Ansari was quoted in the Surrey Advertiser* a few months back as saying that he saw himself primarily as a batsman. Mind you, that was shortly after we had signed Murali Kartik - he's not daft!Corporalhumblebucket wrote:Ansari, playing for Cambridge against Lancs, has just passed his previous best first class score of 41.
* Highly recommended. Better than the official website with none of the obligatory political correctness. You want to get it delivered to the barracks!

Re: Surrey news/articles
He finished 59*, well played young man. We possibly have too many player atm which is very good for competition but is going to lead to possible problems of unhappy players. Ansari is a sort of Batty deputy atm who can bat 7/8. Jordan is showing he can hold his own with the ball now and his extra batting ability puts him above the likes of Linley. When Kartik gets here where does he fit in?

Re: Surrey news/articles
Carrot - that's a very good and concerning question.
In a recent newsletter to members, Adams refers to Rory Burns being ''an example to others of what can be achieved through consistent hard work and application''.
Fair enough. However, there cannot be a greater example of consistent hard work and application - plus success last season - than the Viscount. I do wonder what sort of message it gives to the likes of Dunn, Edwards and Jewell when they see the Viscount now unable to get a game.
The best experience someone can get for playing CC cricket is to play CC cricket. I suspect that some of these players including Ansari may need to go out on loan or leave altogether to get it.

Second 11 currently in action against Sussex, Harinath fell early and Roy went for a breezy 41 as per. Burns continuing to impress after opening the innings he's 36* currently.
Edit: He's now out for 36.

Spriegel finished on 52* as Surrey made 201-7 from 60 overs, they will bat 40 more tomorrow. Sussex made 158-1 from todays 40, not exactly a great day for the kids!

The Viscount isn't playing in the current seconds game which suggests he's under serious consideration to get a recall for Thursday's CC game against Middlesex.

Re: Surrey news/articles
Corporal - I suspect a scorecard from the last seconds match against Sussex would be almost impossible to produce.
The intention was for it to be a two innings match with each side having 100 overs, 60 in one innings and 40 in the next.
However, rain interrupted things after the start and reduced the remaining overs available. Then on the morning of the last day Sussex put in some replacements when several of their players were withdrawn due to call ups to the first XI squad for the CC game the following day.
To add to the confusion, the batting team continued in the second innings where it left off in the first - Surrey were about 200-8. Then when the tenth wicket fell, the not out batsman stayed at the crease and was joined by one of the openers.
Oh and as Sussex ended up walloping us, one or two of their batsmen retired.
I'm not a tweeter at all but if you google ''surrey cricket twitter'' and then scroll down for a bit, you'll find various bits and pieces charting the course of the game. The only Surrey player to emerge with any credit was Matt Spriegel who scored a ton.
You did ask!

Thanks, Guildford. Reminds me a bit of cylindrical chess. Various attempts over the years to find new forms of chess. In cylindrical chess you imagine the board as a cylinder rather than as a flat board and so a piece (eg a rook) can move sideways off one side of the board and come back on on the other. If that makes any sense....

A comfortable win by 40 odd runs for Surrey seconds away to Gloucs in their 40 over Trophy match today.
Info appears thin on the ground but half centuries for Burns, Harinath and Roy as we made 210-6. At least 3 wickets for Spriegel as Gloucs bowled out inside the distance.
Three day Championship match at Gloucs starts tomorrow.

Really hope Roy isn't playing in that match so that he has a chance of playing v Worcs! More realistically I guess he'll be in consideration for our next match away from the Oval.
I'm away for all 4 days of the next CC game so for what it's worth I would play the following team:
Reindeer
Interesting (Steve Davies, get it?)
Gramps
The Brain
Hyphen
Wine Gums
Le Roi
Norah
Never Knowingly
Meaker
Dernbach
Need some nicknames for the last 2!

Thanks, Guildford, good news if Burns and Roy can put pressure on for first team places. If Spriegel can start taking wickets that may mean he resumes last year's role in limited overs games.

Meanwhile......the Surrey website does a good line in irony in reporting the 2nd XI match with Gloucs:
"The prized scalp of Surrey legend Jonathan Batty – now plying his trade in the West Country and batting at number eight – went to Tom Lancefield, who forced his former team mate to drag on whilst aiming a cut at his left arm spin"

I've only recently picked up that we had a point deducted for bowling our overs too slowly in the Middlesex match. I suspect that's something we'll need to watch with a heavy reliance on a seam attack.

Absolute runfest in the three day second eleven game at Gloucs.
Gloucs 343-0 declared. Double century for Benny Howell and a ton for our old boy Jon Batty.
In reply, we're 151-0 at the end of a rain interrupted day two. Third Degree on 88 and Harinath on 53.

I remember Dernbach was sometimes referred to as Dirtbag on the old 606 site. An alternative, given his appearance, would be Tattoo or something to do with tattoos, like pin cushion!Dulwich_Dog wrote:Nickname for Dernbach = Dirtbag. Meakers, I'm struggling , Meaks ? Meakers ?.
Meaker - maybe Streaker, given his speed?

Streaker, yeah - like that, he's certainly got wheels, and his name does't lend easily to the usual cricketing practice of adding a "y" or "ers" at the end of name.
Yes, D'bach's got more artwork than Amy Winehouse. "Popeye"maybe ? Must have cost him a month's wages to get all those tatts done !!!

Bit of an around the houses route but I can't find another. Google ''espn cricinfo tom jewell''; that takes you to The Jeweller's page where you can access scorecards of his last few matches including the Trophy one above.

Reindeer flying back tonight from South Africa on Santa's sleigh. Expected to play in this week's CC match against Durham.
Viscount playing for the seconds tomorrow in a Trophy (40 over) match at Essex. However, he's not playing for them in the 3 day Championship match starting on Wednesday, also against Essex. That suggests he's under consideration for a recall for the Durham match.
Roy's not involved in this week's seconds games at all. Suggests he may keep his place against Durham.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) today confirmed that the Surrey batsman Mark Ramprakash has received a penalty under the ECB’s discipline code.
During the LV= County Championship match between Surrey and Worcestershire on 19th – 22nd April 2012, Ramprakash was reported by Umpires Nigel Llong and Jeff Evans for a Level One breach of the code (using language that is obscene, offensive or insulting and/or making an obscene gesture).

Sadly, it's probably another sign of Ramps' frustration at his own performance. At the risk of he really should have retired before - probably at the point he got that lengthy injury layoff when playing football.

Re: Surrey news/articles
Some new Tweets from Mr. Ramprakash tonight. And he won't let the pitch issue go!
"Why should county players have to take risks worried about unplayable/uneven deliveries? Not good prep for young test batsmen?"
"How do Cook/Trott get big scores in Test cricket? Do they have to hack good length balls back over the bowlers head ?"
I am concerned that he is not spending the time on his game - the thing which he needs to get in order. Whilst his points are somewhat valid (though I don't totally agree with what he says) he has spent the three days between matches on the IPL sofa and tweeting.
Incidentally, I'm a big fan of Ramps the batsman.

Dernbach and Meaker have just been named in the twelve for the England Lions four day match against the Windies in May.
Good news for them although it does mean they'll miss the CC match at Worcs. As Tremlett is unlikely to be fit by then, a lot will depend on Lewis and Linley. Maybe a chance for one of the seconds as well?

Interesting that Hyphen is due to captain the 2nd XI in a one day game against Somerset. That squad also include le Roi , Winegums, Nora and River - so it's quite a turn out..... But of course it may be rained off anyway....

The first CB40 game of the season is meant to be on Friday and on TV so hopefully the weather holds up. Any thoughts on our team for that competition? I'm thinking:
Davies
Le Roi
Hyphen
Wine Gums
Reindeer
Brain
Spriegel
River
Lewis
Dernbach
Meaker
I feel like I've forgotten someone... looks OK though top 7 are all very capable of making big runs and gives us 6 bowling options. I fear Meaker and River will leak quite a few runs but also capable of wicket taking deliveries.

Carrot - quite a decent team though I think it's a bit unlikely that both River and Meaker/Streaker would play on account of possible leakage of runs. May be completely wrong but I would not be surprised to see the team you suggest but with Batty instead of River....
I think there is fair chance that Meaker will play, on basis that he has bowled quite tightly as well as fast in the cc. I think Adams will be looking for ways to get him in at least some limited over teams even though it did not work so well last season.

Re: Surrey news/articles
Carrot - I'll be surprised if River plays in Friday's CB 40 game. He's scheduled to play - along with Ramps and Viscount - in a seconds' three day game at Reigate starting tomorrow. Although anyone could be pulled out on the last day (Friday), that suggests to me these three won't be involved at the Oval.
The player you've missed is Nora. I'm sure he'll play on Friday. Maybe not that relevant for this week but he bowled very well against Somerset in the CB 40 final last season (even though Dernbach took the bowling headlines with late wickets).
The other player who could come into contention is Wilson. He was down to play alongside Hyphen, Maynard, Le Roi , etc, in the seconds' one day match today that was rained off. Contrary to River, Wilson isn't playing in the seconds' game starting tomorrow and I think that's significant. Before anyone starts moaning, only fair to point out that Wilson put in some good performances for Ireland just before our season started and has hardly had an opportunity with us since last year.

Somerset have a first XI injury crisis so their Second XI is all kids. But a great effort nonetheless.
