First topic message reminder :
Hi guys
Just a quick one to let you know that I have spoken with All Out Cricket regarding the amount of Surrey fans we have here at 606v2, and they're going to look to provide any Surrey related blogs/news/articles that they have to this section. Given that their office is located near to the Oval, they often chat with the Surrey guys and as such get some good interviews, so hopefully they can get some of those across here for you fellas to get your teeth into.
Cheers

Agree it's good to see Roy and Harinath get some runs.

Hopefully Hyphen and Maynard can get some runs over the next 3 days and he bowlers can continue to get back into their stride. The trouble with the fixtures this season is that if you don't start well you could be out of it by the end of April with all the CC games crammed in.

That's more like it!
In the 3 day game that started today, Somerset all out for 160. 3 wickets each for Lewis, Viscount and Dernbach with 1 for River. 4 catches for Burns.
Both teams playing 12 (with only 11 batting and fielding). Hyphen has returned to the side along with Freddie van den Bergh. Meaker sitting this one out, apparently rested.
In reply, we're so far 6 without loss. Harinath and River opening. River opened the batting a bit for the seconds last season - I just wonder, surely not ....

Harinath 4
Lancefield 0
River 11
Maynard 6
Hyphen 28
Roy 34
Spriegel 11
Burns 28*
Lewis 36*
Adds up to 170/7 at the close. Good runs again for Burns and Lewis showing he is a decent lower order hitter. We're also ahead of Somerset now which is impressive, very impressive bowling figures earlier which is encouraging. Hyphen and Roy doing their standard 'get a start and get out' routine.

Re: Surrey news/articles
Oops! Not a great second day.
We lost our last 3 wickets this morning for just 10 more runs. Lewis top scored with 40 whilst Burns finished with 33 not out. 180 all out, a lead of 20.
With centuries from Kieswetter and Hildreth, Somerset reached 429 - 8 before declaring. 3 wickets for Freddie van den Bergh with one apiece for Lewis, Viscount, Dernbach and Spriegel plus a run out. Burns added to his growing reputation with 2 catches and 2 stumpings.
Chasing 410 for victory, we ended the penultimate day on 22 -1 with Jordan back in the hutch for 10. His fellow opener Harinath is still there on 1 with Lancefield having scored a quick 11.
It'll take something special to pull off a win from here. Adams will certainly be hoping we don't fold like a pack of cards in the morning. He's got to face the members at the Club's AGM early tomorrow evening. A pre-season loss won't take too much off the gloss from last season's achievements but it's something Adams won't want.

It's really a very poor warm up for the season. With the exception of Burns, hardly anyone has enhanced their claim for selection. Unless you count the Brain and the Reindeer on the grounds that they weren't playing. Still last season we had that horrendous match against Cambridge....

Evening Corporal - just looked at the wallpaper site now. Can't see anything that out of the ordinary there. Am I missing something obvious or has there just been a mass deletion? Thanks.Corporalhumblebucket wrote:

Guildford - yes maybe a bit of hyperbole on my part. It's just the usual 41 gun "salute" from the ex PM and the inevitable responses to it! So predictable....

Re: Surrey news/articles
Thanks, Corporal. Understood and so predictable of the ex PM as you say.
Just back from the AGM. Lot of whinging about introduction of new membership categories without proper consultation and poor admin by the ticket office.
On the cricket front, Chris Adams commendably paid tribute to the role that Chris Schofield had played at the Club.
For the first CC game, Adams and Alec Stewart commented that we'll be looking to select a pretty experienced eleven. Adams confirmed that the Reindeer (liked that one, Corporal! ) will open. His opening partner wasn't specified but Ramps (I think) to be at 3, the Brain at 4 and Hyphen definitely at 5. Adams didn't want to be drawn on the seamers or keeper but stated that Batty would play.
Stewart added that the younger bowlers would have good days and bad days. Interestingly, he added that Dernbach and Meaker were still young guys whilst the Viscount can be regarded as experienced. I was surprised that Stewart is so involved with the first eleven - hadn't appreciated that, probably should have done as he's Executive Director of Cricket (quite whatever that means!). I spoke briefly to him at the end and warmed to him.

Interesting that Batty seems to enjoy a fairly senior or preferential status in the club. I suppose it's not entirely surprising when so many of the younger guys are erratic or unproven. Last year he did come across in interviews as a team man, particularly anxious to ensure that the catering staff were not overlooked when the plaudits were issued....

Oh dear!
Surrey 143 - 5 at lunch on the first day having been put in by the Leeds / Bradford university students.
A fifty for River who again opened (I again wonder ....) but not much for anyone else so far.
Wilson and Burns both playing. Wilson shown as the keeper according to ESPN CricInfo. Meaker omitted from the originally named twelve with a stiff neck. Lancefield and Harinath didn't even make the squad - that seems to be their geese cooked for awhile at least.
Still time to turn it all around in this match. The Viscount and Clive will be looking for quick and cheap wickets. They should get them - before today, the eleven university students had one first class appearance between them. However, all in all, far from encouraging ....

Re: Surrey news/articles
Not exactly an ideal start Mr. Bat!
But currently Maynard and Monty Burns have put together a partnership worth over 100 (257/5 as I type).
I get the feeling someone will be playing the rebuilding role for us quite a lot this season. Top order batting collapses have been the trademark of our pre-season efforts so far.
Still, Mr. Burns is continuing to be impressive, and may have played himself into the team for the start of the season.

314 - 6 at team - after a sprightly partnership between Maynard and Burns. Tom Jewell getting a rare outing today and will be wanting to make most of the opportunity. But as I type he is out immediately after tea.
Burns making a strong bid for selection ahead of Roy in the cc (if there is place for one of the younger batsmen apart from Hyphen and Maynard)

He's certainly making a strong bid for selection in next week's CC opener, either as keeper-batsman or pure batsman!

Re: Surrey news/articles
Nice to have a positive day in the end, very pleased for Monty, I wonder if he should play ahead of Wilson as our keeper now? If Roy is to play then only the opener slot is free as surely Maynard and keeper will be 6/7. Batty at 8 and then Lewis, Viscount and Dernbach although if fit I think Meaker deserves a place ahead of possibly Dernbach based on last year's performance. Hyphen and The Brain will have to bowl their share of overs as we only have 4 'proper' ones.
Speaking of Hyphen, he really is going to need to score some runs or bowl well or something to justify his place in the team as competition for places will be high. Same goes, unfortunately, for Ramps. A bad start for him and they may have to consider giving someone else a chance.

Interesting comments from Scyld Berry in the Telegraph today. Seems to feel Surrey will be major players in the CC this season - even suggesting that we are widely tipped to win it!

Roy will be fortunate if he is in starting line up.....Carrotdude wrote:If Roy is to play then only the opener slot is free.
I think Surrey are a considerable way short of championship contenders. If Meaker and the other seamers really clicked I could see us mounting some sort of challenge. But I think our batting will be too fragile to mount a consistent challenge

Survival would be enough for me regarding the CC.
I'm particularly interested this season so see how the Dukes ball will affect things, hopefully Linley can master it like he did the Tiflex - it will also be a good learning curve for Dernbach and Meaker should they play test cricket in the future.

Who else will open though? Jordan? Spriegel? I'd rather see Roy there than not playing at all, he needs to improve and to do that needs to play. I agree with your assessment of our chances, our batting is far too fragile to be a consistent threat, it will occasionally come off and we are in a good position for chasing totals and forcing results in a short amount of time, but it will often fail as well. Bowling should be reasonably solid, I like the idea of Lewis/Linley with the new ball and Dernbach/Meaker with the old (although I know they are unlikely to all play in the same 11).

Leeds/Bradford bowled out for 205 - 45 of which were extras!
Hyphen opening with Jordan in the 2nd innings according to cricinfo.

Bizarre - even by Surrey standards! At Thursday's AGM, Adams maintained that Hyphen wouldn't open in the CC and would bat at five.Tibor wrote:Leeds/Bradford bowled out for 205 - 45 of which were extras!

Of the 45 extras, 16 were byes conceded by Wilson. That should increase the chances of Mister Burns keeping in the CC opener although I still don't think that's completely certain.

Hi Carrot - just tuning in. Tense stuff although I reckon the Viscount and River might still save our blushes. I would also back Clive to get a wicket if Hyphen is prepared to risk him - mighty expensive so far in this innings.

big season for RHB then?
if he is already dropping down the order, he isnt overly consistent, and he dosent bowl as much as he used to....he will surely be under massive pressure, everytime he bats..
