Hearns v Mayweather jr @ 147.
Hearns is one of my favourite boxers ever and could be the perfect answer to PBF. That lightning fast powerful and accurate jab would cause nightmares for Floyd, he'd have the speed to cope and be able to apply the pressure required to take Floyd out his comfort zone. Plus I don't think Floyd has the power to trouble Tommy's only weakness - his chin.
Hearns LKO.
Other than that I'd say (prime for prime) Tyson v Frazier, Frazier LKO, or Calzaghe v Jones (again prime for prime) Jones LKO would be great fights to see.
Don't know enough about the old era boxers to suggest anything interesting there however having seen a few Youtube clips recently (courtesy of Oxy's thread) I'd agree I'd love to see Dempsey v Marciano (over 15).

sodhat, it's the oldest cliché in the world, mate, but I swear that, once I'd picked it up, I found it almost impossible to put down. Always a case of ' just ten more pages....'
Not only a superb historical document, but also a very entertaining read.

To use a tried and tested cliche, you can hold that one in a phonebox, Dempsey ko for me.

Bobby Chacon vs Israel Vasquez - for the shear fun of it!
Ali vs Tyson - to see Ali beat Tyson in and out of the ring.
Floyd vs Manny - to end the talk
Manny vs JMM @ 135ibs in 2008/2009

I would like to see Jeffries against Marciano. Two absolute beasts clashing with the last man standing. Doesn't really matter whose rules they used and they can compromise by having it take place over 20 rounds. Make it somewhere fairly hot and tell the ref not to get involved too much.
At t'other end of the spectrum, I would love to see Ricardo Lopez in against one of the true greats to see just how good he was. Someone like Villa or Wilde.

Ali v Louis to settle once & for all who IMO is the greatest heavyweight of all time. My heart says Ali but my head thinks that Louis would come from behind on the cards to win by KO/TKO 14th or 15th round.

Good call Eyetoldyouso, I'd be very keen to see those two against each other. I'd find it very difficult to call personally. I'd probably say the same as you, but a razor thin Louis win on points.

Alma and Windy have beaten me to Hamed V Morales and Ketchel v Greb respectively. A great shout on both counts.
Tunney v Louis is one that intrigues me. Not a huge difference in size between them and it really would be a case of the great hunter against the great backfoot fighter. Stick that one on at the Polo Grounds over 15 rounds and give me a hip flask full of prohibition era moonshine and I'd be a very happy man.

Eyetoldyouso and Sodhot, you'd better get out of here quickly before Truss turns up and sees that you've had the sheer nerve and audacity to pick Louis over Ali!
Superfly, good shout on Louis versus Tunney. It's strange, because in many ways we're still all a little unsure of just how good Tunney was / may have been as a Heavyweight. I don't think he could knock Louis out, but at the same time I don't think that Louis could outscore Tunney (assuming they're both at their absolute best, of course). Gun to my head, I'd say that Tunney builds an early lead against Louis, who could be slow out of the blocks, but eventually the 'Brown Bomber', though continued pressure, creates an opening similar to the one Dempsey did in his second fight with Gene - only this time Louis, who remained much more deadly than Dempsey did in the latter stages of a fight, finishes the job with a stream of hooks once Tunney is against the ropes.
Tough on to call, mind you. Louis by a late stoppage would be my best guess.

Re: If you could set up one fight in history????
Cheers, Chris. I wrote an article on the old site questioning how Tunney would have got on against both Louis and Ali as it was something that was raised in Jack Kavanaugh's biography.
Leaving Ali, to one side, I tihnk I concluded that if Louis and Tunney fought three times that each woudl win a fight and the other would be a draw but if anything, now I woudl lean towards Tunney perhaps edging the trilogy with two close UD's in his favour. It would be damn close though.
I agree that Louis is more than capable of finishing Tunney given half a chance and I tihnk he does it at least once in a trilogy of fights. However, if Conn and Schmelling can find faults to exploit in Louis, then Tunney is certainly going to find them and unlike Conn, you can bet your bottom dollar that Tunney sticks to the game plan for the full 15 rounds.

Ketchel vs Hagler would be brutal and it would be interesting to see if Hagler's extra thick skull could absorb the withering power of Ketchel.

Hearns v Pacman at Welter, can Pacman take Tommy's right hand or does he go the Duran route face first.

Like to know what Ali would be doing for the 13 rounds before Louis nails him...probably shutting both his eyes with the jab or something...
Louis footwork, skill levels, chin, durability, jab and movement weren't as good as Ali but hey.......he had everything else going for him..
Hearns v Manny is a mismatch for me.....Never get past Hearns jab and if he did the right cross would be waiting..

Agreed - although I dont see it such an easy win for Ali
Hearns vs Pacman = decapitation.

Chin ? Jab ? movement ? Skill levels ?
What on earth are you on? Have you watched Louis or boxing for that matter. Louis had a lot more natural talent as a prizefighter than Ali, the most precise punching fearsome punching machine in the heavyweight scene ever in my opinion. Where do you get Louis had a bad chin from? That's just absolute top class nonsense.
Think Louis has a comfortable night with Ali's style, Joe didn't like fighters crowding him, Ali wasn't going to do that. Louis would parry the jab until he found the distance and took Ali put by about the 13th.
Skill levels? Ha I've heard it all, just because he didn't do a little shuffle doesn't mean he wasn't the most terrific skilled fighter ever.

When Truss reads that all hell is gonna break loose...
Also I would have loved to have seen arguably the two best SFW's in Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Alexis Arguello go at it, I would tip Mayweather for it but I see it being a mighty difficult fight for him.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion and its that what causes debate, but when you outline nonsense like skill levels and chin, it needs to be addressed.
It's like me saying Earnie Shavers is feather fisted or Mayweather takes too many punches. The comment by Trussman is as nonsensical as that.

Naz could hit enough to be 46 in 100 greatest punchers and from angles and higher than he should have - Khan is easy to hit. Not a great combo.
