Should Roger Be Released
Release Roger
In 2013 (or 2012?) Federer will no longer have to play any of the mandatory ATP tournaments. This priviledge is awarded in recognition of his long term commitment to the ATP tour. If he chooses to take advantage of this priviledge (and by doing so perhaps allow him to lengthen his career) it would of course affect the number of ranking points he can obtain and as a result of this his rank. Cleary in this case Federer would have a rank that would not reflect his true ability.
IMO this is already the case. For further discussion please see the article "Ranking Points Are Ridiculous".
As a privilege for his outstanding achievements for his time on the ATP tour I propose that Roger should be released not just from playing mandatory tournaments but also from the ranking point system.
Dont worry CaledonianCraig as this will not affect Murray... or indeed most other players as they will still be able to go about their everyday scramble for ranking points and rank. The only player that it will affect will be Nadal. This is because as part of the priviledge Federer will be able to chose to be in the opposite side of the draw to a player of his choice. I doubt that Nadal will object as I'm sure he'll see it as the mark of respect that it would be. It would also mean that tennis fans would be saved from the travesty of seeing these two great rivals play each other in a non-final.
Instead of a ranking Federer would just have "exempt" in big red or gold (Federer could choose... ) letters next to his name.
Really its a win win situation

I voted Yes - I figured the OP wasn't being serious, so neither was I.

No, I don't.
I apologise if I mis-interpreted your article. I assumed you weren't serious in suggesting the rules of tennis be changed to accomodate one player getting a bit old.
Actually, I still assume that.

Standing in for CC, I'll add my criticism and jump on the OP for daring to write a funny article.
Hawkeye, can you add another choice to the poll so I can vote..

Re: Release Roger
So are you implying he should have a 'favourable' draw at future GS events?

Re: Release Roger
The OP has still not answered the question on the previous thread. In this fantasy situation where do you suggest placing Roger in the draw. On the opposite side to Nadal they have stated. However are you going to place him to be an expected finalist (1 or 2), expected semi-finalist (3-4), quarter finalist (5-8) or is he just to be in the open draw with the chance of playing Djokovic in round 1. If he gets an honorary seeding then he would be affecting more than Nadal.

Re: Release Roger
I think Hawkeye means that Roger should just be in the final and forget all the other rounds. Byes all the way through, kinda like getting a VIP pass to the head table.

Re: Release Roger
Roger is eligible in 2013 for playing the 'Challenge' round. Bring back the 'Challenge' round for Roger only.

Ah but you have got to be careful. They have not actually said that. Don't want us to have to go round that loop again. Maybe if Hawkeye can clarify then we can progress.

Re: Release Roger
Poorly disguised anti-Federer WUM.
Surprised no-one else has spotted this.
The last article gave it away; this one just confirms it.

I must be mis-understanding your comment. Are you accusing me of being "anti Federer"?!

Re: Release Roger
I have to admit I am very dissapointed in the poll results.
11 posters are too mean to award Roger this small priviledge in recognition of his great contibution to the ATP Tour. Maybe this is due to 606v2 not being representative of the amount of support for Federer amongst tennis fans in general.
Moderators is it possible to end this Poll and close the thread? The option doesn't appear to be available on the edit key.

Re: Release Roger
Can we have a poll as to whether those who voted in favour would also accord Federer the small privelege of scattering rose petals in his path as he walks on court.

Re: Release Roger
If thats the case and if I am Roger's manager, i would make sure Roger face only world no.100's till QF's of every tournament he face.
What about more privilages, like he can come and play his match any time during the tournament, [like MITB in WWE] i.e so once Nole and Murray clash out in semi, Federer could order Nole to play him immdly the finals , and if he still cannot win, then lets make another rule Djoko has to win 3 sets where as Federer has to win just 1 game for the match [come on after all he is on ATP service more than 13 years].
The best is this he could ask the sponsors not to let Rafa bring any bottles nor line them up during the match and ofcourse no pant pricking too.

That was a much needed vote. I have just noted that the vote for granting Federer some well deserved privileges is creeping up. There are now 9 yes votes to 11 no votes. 3 more votes for Federer and I may have to inform the ATP of the result. Does anyone know their number...

Re: Release Roger
A Nadal fan is worried that Federer will be more fresh for a SF meeting with Nadal, than a final. By the way, this scenario probably already happens judging by the legendary socal's article:
