The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
First topic message reminder :
Welcome to the Virtual Rugby Pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing picture of Micky T above the bar!
So pull up a chair....what'll it be?

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
At my school we had two pitches and two sports teachers, but we'd play rugby on both even though we had more good football players than good rugby players. We played loads of rugby matches against other schools and won once in a blue moon; the one football match we played, we won by a street.
Another thing that annoyed me with PE was favouritism. One year it was announced that we'd be getting a side together for a table tennis tournament. Next thing you know the team's been pinned to the notice board and it's made up of our best rugby players. Did we do well in the table tennis tournament? Did we bullocks.

I can see where the PE teacher was coming from.
You have a group of teenagers who are committed to coming out training hard and representing their school.
I know it is a source of frustration for coaches who have players doing GAA, soccer and rugby. I think at that stage you are looking not just for personal development but for team development.

My old school just played in their first ever game of rugby this month

Just to think I remember trying to drum up some interest in getting a team started about 10 years ago!

In my opinion the biggest problem is the teachers just ignore the lower performing pupils in favour of the more naturally gifted kids.
Rather than helping the weaker kids get up to speed the gap just widens further.

I know what you mean Lucky.
We hardly ever played Netball, in fact we didn't know the rules but a local school who we always swamped at hockey challenged us to a netball match. The team consisted of the 5 forwards, the centre half and the tallest back from the hockey team.
Was really embarrassing when the ref kept blowing the whistle and we ahd no idea why.

Rodders, you're right and it's the worst thing a teacher can do. No doubt it's easier for them to focus on pupils who like their subject, but it's a disgrace that the ones who need most help get the least.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Im lucky in that our school never had any of that.
The best thing our rugby coach did was once he took aside one lad (a foreign chap) and suggested to him that he wasn't very good (obviously he said it nicer) but had a number of good skills would he not try GAA - that he could be very good at it.
This lad have never even heard of GAA but gave it a go and loved it. He only did rugby as his mates were doing it.

The writing on the wall has been read;Jacques Delmas has been fired as USAP head coach after five months, and 7 defeats in 12 games. He will be replaced by Goutta/Manas for this season. After a fairly positive spell at BO, and a disaster at Stade Francais,he has been unable to drive the Catalans;bloggeurs are talking of a certain ML for next season

It could be applied to any subject I suppose Luckless but to me its so crucial for P.E.
It a vicious circle. You can't get good at something you don't enjoy and you tend not to enjoy someting you're not good at.
With the lower performing kids its about encouragement and helping them enjoy it and not feel like failures.

This is exactly what happened to me at school.
Now I love sport, even though I'm no good at it, but in my first 3 years at secondary school, I really did try and take part in a lot of things like cross country running and gymnastics. With cross country specifically I received next to no encouragement, because tehre were girls in my year who were much, much better so I was left to just get on with it, with no help at all. I gave it up when I was 13.
The only sport I've ever been good at was swimming, but our pool got closed when I was 14, due to foundation issues/ unsafe building structure and we never got a new one.
Thus ended pretty much any interest I had in participating in any sport, and all that by age 14. I agree that the way PE being taught at school needs to be changed, I just don't see how this testing is going to help at all. All I can see is that it'll make it worse.
