Edinburgh v R Metro joke result
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/rugbyunion/club/8899469/Edinburgh-48-Racing-Metro-47-match-report.html
This is surely some sort of windup? I mean, for years euro-centric lovers of this fine game have harped on to all and sundry that there is no defence in the south and that the relative dogfights up north are played out due to the strength put into the defence of the teams. Makes you think though that in terms of internationals, trying to find any sort of conclusive strength behind this argument is nigh on impossible. Looking at combined results every year it is always the big 3 of the south putting it over their northern brothers.
There was mockery thrown at the outright ludicrous result between the Waikato Chiefs and Lions a couple of years a go. The score was 65-72 on that occasion and the heinie-lovers had a field day. Now I find that Edinburgh scraped a 1 pt victory over French upstarts from Paris, but had to score 48 pts to win.
Therefore, I can only assume that next time there's a scoreline blowout down south people will remain quiet about the defence, we need only mention this game as proof that the defence up north isn't all that it's cracked up to be!
In fact, I wonder why I can find little mention of this aberration?

I'd rather see 48-47 than 3-0!
Both teams obviously threw it about and commited men to the rucks which left gaps behind.
Sounded like a fantastic game to me.

Indeed....no real mention of the poor defence, but a lot of people calling the game an 'epic'

It might be because we couldn't care less about the poor defence.
We won. We were entertained. I don't need much more.

You misunderstand the intentions of my post IanBru and well done to Edinburgh.
I am trying to highlight whenever there is a scoreline like this in the Super XV, there are inevitable calls from the North that it is basketball or rugby-lite. Does this mean Rugby-Lite has spread north?

I think it's called 'wumming' chewed_mintie. The fact that you've appeared to have bitten shows it sadly probably worked.

Contrast this game to the sarries biaritz game. A snooze fest compared to what I saw last night. Jog on mate

Hang on ruggerradge, I am making a valid point so I won't jog on.
Clearly the tone of my original post was tongue in cheek. I couldn't care less if it was a Scottish club team involved, what I am pointing out is that now that we have had this sort of result in NH rugby, it is suddenly ok. It is exciting and action packed. Which I don't disagree with, a last minute try to nick the game is of course exciting especially if it your team that scores it.
I am just hoping the next time that it happens in the SH, we don't get the usual hysteria about the Super XV being inferior to the H Cup (which it isn't) because the game is more attack focused.

It could also be that this game is the exception to the rule, not the norm
Maybe

Picking 1 result is a bit silly when trying to generalise, no?

Perhaps real rugby supporters can celebrate a try fest such as the Edinburgh game but don't whinge about the need for new laws to replicate it when it doesn't happen every week?

Incidentally, Iain Morrison made a similar point in yesterday's Scotsman:

I for one will book tickets for the return game in the hope it will be half the game of last weekend (at least Racing should seek for revenge and play for 80 minutes this time).
at the I'd go with Riskysports, its more an exception that confirm the rule.

mintie, fair comment - hopefully not to many of those throwing derision on the Super XV migrated across to v2

Indeed, and now that the All Blacks have cemented their dominance with a WC win, perhaps even the likes of Stephen Jones will have to concede that the Super XV is producing better players.

No your not, your just banging on about SH v NH rugby in a thinly veiled way. There is no such thing as the NH way of playing. Each national side has hugely different styles of play, each of the teams within their domestic leagues has hugely different styles of play.
I think, as others have pointed out, you've just had some leg pulling and have bitten.
