First topic message reminder :
This has literally made me feel sick.
I'm feeling pretty disillusioned with the human race, right now. Restore my faith, peeps:

I think Mercurio used exactly the same phrase to Mac that I used to Keizo which got me a 24 hour ban. Actually I used Tuesday and he used Thursday.......but the gist was the same.
So if the mods are being consistent then they will have applied the same ruling.

For those of you who do feel strongly about this sort of thing, there is one of those e-petition thingies here

Not a fan of these e-petitions myself but I know some people rate them

Actually I think that post was removed or edited long before any bans were implemented (if indeed any bans HAVE been implemented)

A noble cause, but I think we must get our priorities in order. More serious crimes against people can carry less severe sentances than those being proposed in this petition. When someone can get less for Cuddle in a bad way than someone who chucks a cat in a bag off a bridge in a weighted bag then there is something wrong.

I think they are a good idea, but tend to get hi-jacked by the professional protestor, soap dodging hippy types, who somehow feel they have to disagree with every element of society (anti-capitalism, Bankers are "Bad" etc , and thus diminish the credibility of the system and any good intentions it may have.
Bloody lentil knitters.

What the guy did was disgraceful, there was another instance the other week of a guy just picking up a cat in the middle of the day in Ramsgate town centre and swinging it round by its tail (that one probably was Mac).

I agree with super (about the sentencing). I knew some good would come of this thread.
I wonder if we Scots are too wild and untamed to get with the animal love fest you southerners are into. Not including that guy with the Porsche obviously.
I have to say having met some Scots dog owners it seems the bug is spreading unfortunately.

I don't think we are, I think we've just happened across a few people who aren't big animal lovers and just happen to be Scottish (not that I consider myself Scottish untamed or wild)
I think it was a disgraceful act, but much worse goes on in the world to be "outraged" about.

I think by and large the system itself does a very good job of diminishing its own credibility without help from anyone else.
Ian Hislop has a show on BBC2 tonite called When Bankers Were Good (I know he's not everyones cup of tea) thats meant to be very good. Illustrates when bankers were philanthropists involved with society and contrasts them with todays masters of the universe.

Now we have the MODS' attention, would ADMIN please elevate Ned's Fantasy Game for the South African Open to the sticky category? Many thanks.
Back on topic, our newspaper's front page last week featured a dead raccoon that a lady had battered the door to City Hall with, apparently dismayed that the roadkill carcass(sp?) had not been picked up by the "City". Judging by the outaged letterstotheeditor writers, not a popular move. Idiots.

Too much blame is put on the bankers though Diggers as if it is solely their responsibility, yet these same protestors cannot see that governments allowed it to happen and have made as just as many mistakes which have helped put us in the state we are currently in.

Indeed, but I dont think that excludes the bankers from their actions. The fact that you are in a position to do something doesnt mean that you should go ahead and do it.

Hope we haven't lost too many posters; every one is highly valued on the Golf Board and trust no-one has received anything more than a one-shot penalty. If that. Certainly not out of bounds. Thank you.

No problem. Anything else needs doing let us know.
Nobody has gone out of bounds, we don't want to lose posters either. A one shot penalty was issued for a second infringement. I believe, and hope, that is the end of the matter.

"Research from National Pet Month shows how our nation’s love for pets is stronger than ever due to companionship needs, security or just simply for more family fun. There are 27 million pets in the country and 43% of households contain at least one furry, feathery or scaly family friend, making pets well and truly part of the UK’s landscape.
Leading industry expert, the Pet Food Manufacturers Association (PFMA) carried out the research on behalf of National Pet Month, which celebrates Great British Pets and runs from 5th April to 5th May. It has provided an insight into the pet purchasing trends in the UK outlined as follows;
* There are 27 million pets in the UK with dogs and cats being the animal of choice for pet lovers with over 7.3 and 7.2 million across the UK respectively.
* 60% of single people in the UK buy a pet for companionship – 39% of whom have replaced their partner with a pet
* 21% of pet owners have wanted a pet since childhood, and almost of half of people living in the North East have wanted a pet since their early years
* The East Midlands has the most pet lovers, with 14% of the pet population living in the heart of the UK, compared to only 4% of the population residing in Wales.
* 39% of London pet owners feel the need for companionship despite having over 7.5 million neighbours across the city
* 21% of owners bought their pet for companionship, compared to only 5% who have their pet for security"
When you see stats like this, it becomes clear that we are a nation obsessed with our pets. Mock our furry friends at your peril!

I thought this 'discussion' had died a death but thanks for resurrecting it
We are indeed a nation of pet lovers and I had to have my dog put down last year due to old age. What I have failed to grasp is how people seem to have associated a bit of humour with a condoning of mistreatment of animals.
Strange, but I love animals of all sorts yet I was able to laugh at a tongue in cheek comment and take it for what it was. Maybe it was a bit distasteful but how many people on here can honestly say that they haven't laughed at something offensive at some point in their life?

I think we all know I love cats and hope to have one as a pet some day so it is not like I hate animals or wish to see harm come by them. I will admit that a certain type of dog owner really gets to me. I think we all know the type. Often seen with a dog embelished fleece on.
Regards the use of humour you would think I would learn given how many times it has gone for me, but it just wont sink in.

I'm a cat man myself but this act was despicable. It's the act of an out-and-out coward who would pick on a defenseless (and presumably trusting) animal. Nothing personal Mac but the fact "it's only a dog" means what exactly? What makes you think that, as a human, you (read: or any other human) have some superior worth? You weren't put here by a God for some sublime purpose so you're just an evolutionary end-point and have no more intrinsic worth than a dog.McLaren wrote:Are you kidding me, it is only a dog. Not that I condone this sort of thing but compared to what we do to each other I find it hard to be fully outraged by this.

Here's a question.
When you (accidently) run over an animal in your car do you feel guilty?
I wouldn't care if it was a cat, yorkshire terrier or any other "joke" dog, but I don't like hitting songbirds and I'd probably feel a bit sad to run over anything bigger than a spaniel (even though a spaniel is still technically a rubbish dog)

Re: Off topic (but I don't care)
I think mocking the fact it was "only" 6.7 miles and then commenting that "only" makes me feel 10% outraged and then compounding it by replying it was one of the best comments that "person" has ever made touched a nerve with me I'm afraid. I do regret the "scum" comment, but I was shaking with rage at the time. Only got a dog 3 years ago because my son had been pestering me to get one. I never really was a dog lover before, but am very fond of it because they are great companions.
I think we all laugh sometimes at distasteful things. Just thought the whole mocking of it was a out of order and not really necessary. The comment made by Mac was so not laugh out loud funny to me. Humour is a personal thing I guess.

Super
Not bothered what I hit unless it makes a mess of my car. A badger is the worst thing to hit is it tends to badly mangle the bodywork and often the radiator if you are unlucky. Bigger game birds like pheasants are also a bugger as they seem to bleed a lot, especially when they get stuck in the wheel arch and you only notice a mile or so later.
Flado
Shaking with rage?? Really?
Just as well I toned down what my initial response actually was.

I suppose the point is that they believe that from their scientific research anyone who doesnt believe in a creator is the idiot. That for me is what makes it interesting. These guys arent religious creationist zealots, they are rational, immensley intelligent people.
Im not religious, 10 years of going to church as a kid made sure of that, but that doesnt mean it cant be interesting.

Smithers, what Im saying is based on a BBC series I watched earlier in the year. Im not saying that all scientists have this belief, or even the majority, far from it Im sure. But they rolled out a lot of people who were clearly at the top of their fields and for me it was an interesting perspective and made me a little bit less cynical towards the subject.

There is lots that I don't find remotely funny. I have to say I don't find any of the following funny at all:
Ricky Gervais,
Little Britain,
Catherine Tait
Russel Brand
Never seen Royle Family but it just looks like a load of scouse pikeys. Can't be that funny.

True enough. I liked the old episodes of the royal Family but it certainly got worse until we are only left with the dreaded xmas special.
Then we have My Family which is possibly one of the most successful sitcom in British TV in many ways and yet for me has never had one single funny line in it. (I have to watch occasionally it as my wife does the PR)
Equally for me programs like Never Mind the Buzzcocks and all the other samey time things are utter gash...but some people love them.
Be boring if we were all the same I guess.

Re: Off topic (but I don't care)
To be honest Faldo (I'm having issues calling you that, there is only 1 Faldo and it isn't you ) I find an awful lot of modern comedy pretty dire, think it might be best if I stick to Mock the Week
