Christmas Movies
With only 33 days to go till Santa comes.
What Christmas themed films do you enjoy to watch during the holiday period?
My two I always enjoy, and make sure to mark in the Radio Times are - Scrooged (staring Bill Murray) and A Muppett's Christmas Carol.
Anyone else got films they look out for, or films they avoid like the plague at christmas time?

Muppet's Christmas Carol. Home Alone was on some time lasty week I think, pretty early for it! It's a poor enough film but Santa Claus with Tim Allen used to be on the Saturday before Christmas and would always get you ramped up for it!

Re: Christmas Movies
It's a Wonderful Life - A standard at this time of year and while it's overrated in respect to Capra's other work it's still an exceptional piece of film making nonetheless.
Holiday Inn - Always felt this was the superior piece of work compared to the loose remake White Christmas just over a decade later. While both films used Irvine Berlin's wonderful songs the first also benefited from being based on Berlin's concept while the later deviated from that. Plus it's got Astaire in the mix which is always a win which the later didn't due to him turning it down.
The Shop Around the Corner - Another Jimmy Stewart film this time a film that often gets forgotten about but has one of the best on screen partnerships I've seen in any film of it's ilk. It would go onto inspire in it's plot premise the film You've Got Mail many decades later.

Re: Christmas Movies
Does it have to be Xmas themed?
It's not Xmas without a good dose of Ray Harryhausen films
Sinbad series
Jason and the Argonauts
Clash of the Titans
It came from beneath the sea
Magic.

I guess asking for xmas themed was a bit restrictive. Happy for any film that is regularly shown around the holiday period to be included in people's favourites.
Jason and The Argonauts is an absolute classic, and will always watch that when it's on!!

Re: Christmas Movies
I watched "its a wonderful life" for the first time last year. The wife blubbed like a baby!
Personal favourites include any version of a Christmas Carol (taped the Jim Carey one earlier - havent seen it). Particularly like Scrooged.
Also really like Miracle on 34th Street as well - that has a real Xmasy feel.
Other than that - Die Hard?

For a true Christmas classic you can't beat "A Christmas Story"

Re: Christmas Movies
Personally I love The Nightmare Before Christmas (being a Tim Burton fan).
Have to agree the Die Hard films are a must.
On a more classical note I love the version of A Christmas Carol with Patrick Stewart as Scrooge, not to mention Blackadder's Christmas Carol...never fails to make me laugh out loud. Although this may sound incredibly corny I also love watching The Great Escape.
One I avoid like the plague would have to be The Sound of Music
The Snowman, on the other hand, I'm failry ambivalent about. Don't mind watching it, but not bothered if I miss it.

Home Alone 1&2
Christmas Vacation
Elf
Fred Claus
Four Christmases
The Grinch
Santa Claus 1&2
Jingle All The Way
Will all be watched in my house between December 1st and 24th. I also like to do a Star Wars marathon on Boxing Day going in chronological order as oppose to release date.

Santa Claus: The Movie (one with Dudley Moore) loved that film and usually end up watching it every year, usually on xmas eve.

Re: Christmas Movies
Planes, Trains and Automobiles. To me an absolute Christmas classic. Just hush until the family are all sleeping tight, then I watch and have a good cry at a great comedy actor (John Candy) and the ending, that is so befitting of the man.

I love 'The Polar Express'
Someone mentioned 'The Snowman'.....I love this film but it has to be watched on Christmas Eve.....it's no use when they put it on Christmas Day or Boxing Day....it's too late then, it's not the same at all.

Re: Christmas Movies
No mention of Gremlins alongside Die Hard, you'd be hard pushed to find another Christmas film that isn't too syrupy and vomit inducing.

I'd also recommend On Moonlight Bay which has an amusing Christmas sequence in it, and Doris Day sings a Christmas song in it.

Has to be It's A Wonderful Life for me. One my top 10 all time favourites.
And I love The Snowman too, can't wait to introduce my 3 year old niece to it. She needs to work on her attention span first though
