How did you decide on your 606v2 name?
First topic message reminder :
Just for a bit of fun...
I did this artical back on the old 606 to try and find out how posters came by their various names. Quite a laugh at the time as some of the explainations were hilarious. I think it is time to remind everyone again.
Just to get the ball rolling: The two great loves in my life are Heavy Metal music & Leicester Tigers (don't tell the wife & kids!!!) so it was a case of putting the two together.
So Metal Tiger was born.
How did you get your monicker?

The ginger gene is recessive, meaning that both parents have to be carriers, otherwise another gene will present. We are a dying breed...

Rhino is my rugby nickname. More people call me Rhino than by my real name. Dragon was my old cage fighting nickname.

Later changed to Ravavivian on account of Landsdowne Road being renamed The Aviva Stadium.
This was shortened to Rava or Rav in the old 606 Virtual Pub.

I thought they had been assimilated rather then been driven out, in common with England. It was battles with the Saxons of Northumbria that the main battles of Brythonic legend (Taliesin and Aneurin) concentrate on, although it is quite possible that the Old North was unable to withstand the Gaels and Northumbrians in addition to Viking raids into what is now Cumbria.
I'm certainly no expert on the subject Glas but I do take an interest in history. The older history accounts tend to portray the surviving dominant culture as being the "aggressive conqueror exterminating the locals" but it is an incredibly subjective view point. In later studies it is far more apparant that, whilst battles did occur for dominance, the locals would just assimilated to whoever was incharge and rather painlessly in most cases.

Re: How did you decide on your 606v2 name?
Yes and it should be remembered that the very fact Taliesin and Aneurin wrote down their poetry was a result of the significant Roman influence on the Brythons which pre-dated the Saxon influx to the East. South of Hadrian's wall Rome and its culture was assimilated into to the local culture to a greater extent, especially at the level of the nobility. For evidence of this see the old Roman spas in Bath which had Roman and local Gods in effigy. In Wales this was less apparent. There were four garrison towns that tried to keep Wales in check (Chester, Caernarfon, Carmarthen and Chepstow) but Wales at this time was half in half out and at the downfall of empire was governed under a dispensation from Rome by the local nobility who were Romano-Brythonic.

Re: How did you decide on your 606v2 name?
Speaking of history, I arrived at my ma and da's house several years ago to find my eldest son (who was a sole toddler then) dancing around the living room and singing this disturbing off-kilter obscure Mike Oldfield song with them.
Before we left, I mentioned that, although it was very odd, the sing seemed vaguely familiar. I was informed that my da had just bought it on CD, but that it had been a B-side of one on Mr Oldfield's 45s, back in the day. My da used to play it on the record player when I was much the same age as my son, and I danced around in precisely the same way.
Song was "Don Alfonso".

That is almost identical to the DNA mapping for England & Wales.
Around about 85% of people tested showed Celtic heritage, the other 15% were made up of Norse/Norman (same thing) mainly predominant in the North & East and Saxon in the South & West, roughly split along the Dane Law line. But with successive migrations between & over the whole of both islands those boundaries are very blurred with a lot of people tested showing dual heritages.
We are all a lot more like each other than we sometimes like to admit.

Actually...
This was supposed to be a thread on 606 names but a discussion on language & heritage has broken out too.
I actually quite like that.
I think the best conversations do meander around a bit. Makes 'em more fun.

Re: How did you decide on your 606v2 name?
just a quick world on the Basque heritage: there have been a lot of speculation around them as their language basically relates to no other european language (doesnt fall in the indo-european family which includes celtic, german and roman languages amongst others) and also because there is a high proportion of RH- blood there. Recent Genetic studies showed that they dont have anything much different from other pre-farming european population (including celts) just that they somehow escaped cultural assimilation by local celtiberes, romans, wisigoths, francs or others newcomers...

Indeed Metal but in our case the relationship is with the Basque/Northern Spain as the Celtic clans that came to Ireland came via the sea not via Britain which was the original thinking. We have no other connection with Britain other than minor Norse/Norman to a small extent. Funnily enough when the English were here in any numbers there was little integration with the natives....

DOD, you say Norse/Norman but the Normans were of Norse origin themselves, weren't they?

Re: How did you decide on your 606v2 name?
Norse = Viking
Norman = Northern France Normans - the lads who took over Britain.
Am sure there is a connection originally with them..but not sure if that was part of the testing.

Correct, but my point is that the Normans came to northern France from Scandinavia.

Again it is subjective and depends on your point of view. If you want to find differences to support the "we have nothing in common" camp you will find them, if you want to find similarities to say "we have something in common" you also will.
Both Gaels & Brythones were celts and originated from Europe in the last migration after the ice age. But don't let language & ancestry get too mixed up as the same thing, they are connected but not inclusive. Most Celts in England stopped speaking their own dialects and adopted Latin & then Saxon. If you wanted to trade in europe it helps, and trade drives almost everything.
As for the English mixing with the natives... I certainly did plenty of that last time I was in Dub!

On a slightly different tack, there is a village team by us who's players tend to be short squat and aggressive and they play in green. They have been nicknamed "the Sprouts".

Both my kids are half Irish... Although they are both Nordies and yes I did marry their Ma! but it didn't end well tho For a brief time there was a beautiful moment between the barricades of the two communities, but sometimes you just can't over come years of difference like that, after all, she liked soccer and I liked rugby. It was dooooomed!
But I got my beautiful babes out of it so all is well.
