How did you decide on your 606v2 name?
First topic message reminder :
Just for a bit of fun...
I did this artical back on the old 606 to try and find out how posters came by their various names. Quite a laugh at the time as some of the explainations were hilarious. I think it is time to remind everyone again.
Just to get the ball rolling: The two great loves in my life are Heavy Metal music & Leicester Tigers (don't tell the wife & kids!!!) so it was a case of putting the two together.
So Metal Tiger was born.
How did you get your monicker?

No prizes for guessing what my name is all about! Definitely a contender for most boring name on 606v2.
I wanted to change it when I joined here but wanted people to recognise me from the old 606, so kept it!

I suppose I should chance it to Wales606v2 now...

My team mates used to yell "offload" at me so much I actually thought it was my name.
In fact it's a short version of my full name which is "Offload the ******* ball you ****".
Over the years I've learned to answer to just Offload - makes communication easier.

Surname is Ngan.
Mates called me versions of that my whole life. At 31 was starting to feel old so ran off to China for 10 years (about 12 years ago). Got myself a hotmail address and called myself nganboy to make myself feel young.
Still use it today as not any younger/

Only because you needed a translation. As in my case if it were in English (Be Strong New Zealand) you'd have gone "oh my, what a Tinkywinky". It would be like me choosing "Twlltinpobsais" or "Cymruambyth" Wales for ever. See?

Re: How did you decide on your 606v2 name?
lol Glas a du. You make a good point. But often translation from a language doesn´t do the word justice. You translate the Maori word mana with respect as in Tana Umaga was allowed to perform the haka even though he wasn´t a Maori because he had mana. Respect doesn´t convey the sense of the Maori word as it has other connotations that can´t be expressed by a singular word.
In English we say climax but in French it is a culminating point - point culminant. So you´re quite right, to put be strong Christchurch on t-shirts wouldn´t have the same emotive pull as kia kaha. Hence my username as I agree in English it sounds like sticks and stones may break my bones but the word choker really hurts inside so please refrain from using it.
Just as an aside, is there a Welsh version of Countdown? I´ll have a consonant please. Yeah me too. Another consonant. And one for me...

Re: How did you decide on your 606v2 name?
On the late-lamented ScrumV board I chose the name Portnoy's Complaint - which I retained on v1. But dropped the 'Complaint' in v2.
Portnoy's Complaint is the semi-eponymous title of a Philip Roth novel. I chose it as a entirely self-deprecating user-name as a reference to his 'manual habits' etc.
The name is analogous - if you google the novel on wiki and interpret the word 'sex' for 'rugby' then you may get an idea of my thought process.

Re: How did you decide on your 606v2 name?
Mine is Glas a Du (blue and black). It is a reference to the colours of my home town team, Rhydaman (Ammanford) RFC, est. 1887, winners of last year's inaugural Swalec Plate. Specifically Glas a Du referrs to the club song "Du a Glas yw y lliwiau..." "black and blue are the colours..." on the tune of Chelsea's "Blue is the colour..." Both of my brothers and I have represented the club amongst others. [/quote]
I always find it interesting to see the connections between Welsh, Irish and Scotish Gaelic. When watching games on Alba or S4C the shared words are often very aparent especially with Scots. However it must have been a colour blind St Patrick who landed on these shores. Du meaning black in Welsh is fair enough as it is Dubh in Irish. Glas on the other hand is the exact same spelling as the Irish for Green.

I'm a Welsh speaker and am always amazed at the differences between Irish/Scottish Gaelic and Welsh. Especially when there are similar words between Welsh, Cornish and Britton.
It's also interesting that Glasgow is called that because it's taken from Welsh meaning Blue Field after a battle that took place between 2 Celtic tribes back in the times before Romans.

Ah now then, it also means green. Strathclyde is a corruption of the Welsh name Ystrad Clyd, but in Welsh they were descibimg the valley as sheltered not naming the river. The river would have been Afon. Just the same as every other river. That is why you have 6 rivers named Avon in England.

Re: How did you decide on your 606v2 name?
Thanks for the language tip there Glas a du. Actually there is a connection between Welsh and Maori. They´re the only two languages where sign makers ask to be paid by the metre rather than by the hour: Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateapokaiwhenuakitanatahu and Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch work out more profitable that way.

No, it means green field. When grass is very lush it is called glas to convey the deeper green colour. Blood is a good fertiliser for grass.
