First topic message reminder :

Welcome to the Virtual Rugby Pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.

The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing pictures of Rhys Priestland, Cian Healy, or the special one of Charlize Theron and Gibbo above the bar!

So pull up a chair....what'll it be?

Pete - okay. Still don't really understand, but then I don't get how pensions really work.

The pension is still going to be a good one though, isn't it?

That's the understanding I've been getting from reading the newspapers, it's just not going to be as good as what people are used to having.

(I could be completely wrong, the coverage of the whole thing hasn't been very good imo).

Can I come too if your going please??!!

Dreamer: I went into Britannia and a personal advisor sat me down and talked through what a pension is, how much you get etc etc, he even said I should stick with my company one because it's a very good pension. I'd reccommend just going into a building society and asking whether you could have some advice on pensions etc. They did mine for free because I was with them too!!

Enough about pensions, let's talk about vegetables. Hound and I tried to get a conversation going about leeks yesterday but it fizzled out.

Prop - I should do really. My mam tries to explain it all to me, but I tend to glaze over half way through the convo. Just really doesn't interest me (which is not good, tis v imporant!).

Lucky, seeing as it's your birthday I shall do what you ask: which is better, your standard potato, or a sweet potato?

I don't like many vegetables. Potatoes, broccoli, celeriac, leeks, peppers, cress and watercress, I think that's the lot. And herbs, of course.

I love pretty much all veg.

not the biggest fan of leeks actually, and peppers tend to make me a bit ill (the green peppers do anyway).

Oh, but I don't like onions much.

Potatoes are my favourite though. By far. They are what I would call: LUSH.

And yay I've found something to do in work! an e-learning module on sustainable development. Excellent.

Glas, I don't disagree with some of what you say there, but in terms of the 'gold plated pension' you refer to, I pay 11% of my monthly wage into my pension. One of the attractions of joining the job was that although I pay higher contributions than any other public sector worker during my employment, I get a good pension at the end of it. If the government has their way and changes the pension scheme that I signed up to, I will end up paying 13% and getting less at the end of it. How can that be right and fair?

I understand that it's not right or fair, but what do you say to somebody who had the foresight to pay a private pension only to have to retire in the middle of a stock market crash? That's not fair, but its also a case of tough luck, get on with it. So whilst it may not be right or fair it may actually be necessary if we want a public sector to speak of in five years time. Now don't get me wrong, I wouldn't trust every word politicians say on this issue, especially Con-Dems, but we will all feel the pinch in this, nobody can be immune.

I agree, nobody can be immune to the global tightening of belts that is needed in the current climate Glas, but you have to look at the people making the decisions and question whose interests they really have at heart.

In all seriousness, I love my job and it would take a lot to make me want to leave it, but I face the very real prosepct that in 18 months time, despite the fact that the cost of living will have increased, I will actually take home less in my pay packet each month due to the increase in pension contributions and freeze on pay increments.

If that happens I will struggle to pay my mortgage and feed my family and will have no alternative but to seek other employment. I will not be the only police officer that is that situation.

Dreamer, They played in Wembley when I was over last month. I hadn't heard of them but there were decent enough. I preferred Tinchy Sryder when he was there. Chipmunk was garbage!

Class stadium. One of those places where there isn't a bad seat in the house. Very well connected with Tube and Bus lines. Plenty of good grub to be had close by too. (It does help that before the game there were selling authentic Lousiana barbecue, one of the best things I ever ate was some BBQ ribs and some pulled pork there)
