Harionrodaquay's da jumps to his defence!
Hilarious footage (first clip on attached rugbydump link) of Imanol's Harinordoquy's da charging onto the field to defend Imanol when his lad got involved in a bit a row with the Bayonne 7 in the Basque derby last night. After a bit of handbags with the Bayonne 7, the da gets tackled by Benji Boyet, the Bayonne 10, the da gets escorted off with Imanol quite sheepishly telling the da to get off and then the da being escorted out of the ground.
Very funny and all that, but not good news for Biarritz even tho they did get only their second win of the season - imagine the FFR takes a poor view of spectators invading the pitch in the Top 14 and then getting involved in a fight with opposing players. Bit of an embarassment for Imanol as well - can imagine the sort of slagging he's going to get in the weeks ahead from the opposition!!!
Off topic, didn't know that Peter Fitzgibbon ref'd Top 14 matches - or at least if it's not him he's a dead ringer. If it is then Ireland must have cornered the market in non-French but fluent French-speaking refs

Looks like Biarritz only win when Harinorduquy is on the pitch!

Poor Imanol. I'd say he was mortified...

This takes "embarassing parents" to a new level. Fans have been given life bans for this type of behaviour, I wonder what the outcome here will be?

Regarding the ref, I know the PRL get refs in from the Pro12 and T14 for league games. so the players are used to them for European matches. Makes sense for the T14 to do the same.

T14 round 10 (which included this game although was eventually delayed) had only foreign refs , part of some sort of exchange with other nations I heard :
Stade Français - Clermont : George Clancy (Ireland)
Toulon - Agen : Neil Patersson (Scotland)
Biarritz - Bayonne : Peter Fitzgibbon (Ireland)
Brive - Racing-Métro : Greg Garner (England)
Toulouse - Perpignan : JP Doyle (??)
Lyon - Montpellier : Leighton Hodges (Wales right?)
Bordeaux-Bègles - Castres : Carlo Damasco (Italy!)
was probably a one-off but should be a good idea to have it once every quarter to get french clubs up to speed when it comes to english-speaking refs management.

Hope the Stade and Clermont players had fun deciphering George Clancy's Limerick brogue - we find it hard enough in Ireland to understand the lad.
On Imanol's da, this sort of stuff is pretty common in gaelic football matches over here (a few well-publicised recent incidents in Tyrone and Galway) but first time I've ever seen it a senior club rugby match anywhere.

dads getting physically involved in their kids games frequently happens in 14/15 years old games in france... to Lucien Harinordoquy defense, his son was said to be beaten up by 2 players at the same time (well that's what BO supporters are claiming). hope the guy gets banned as its truly embarrassing for a professional sport.

Re: Harionrodaquay's da jumps to his defence!
to be fair, Imanol's not exactly a softy, imagine his old school dad.
unacceptable, but hilarious.
also, if he was getting beaten up by 2 opposition players, id be asking where the F*CK was his team mates, he's the heartbeat of the biarritz team and id be very surprised if none of his team-mates were straight in headfirst if that was the case! (not to say you're wrong whocares, i literally have no idea of the story other than what I've read).

You can say that again, seeing my old man brandishing fists at my own business just to get put to ground would probably be enough for me to hide my face for a few days
That was the only point of amusement to this story for me, the rest just reminds me of football and makes me wonder if it's happening increasingly often in rugby now...

It was a mass brawl, early game hand bags by the looks of it. A couple of Bayonne players and Harry Ordinary had branched off from the major melee. Imanol's dad came in to equal up the numbers (crazy bloke) only to be tackled from behind by a third Bayonne players and the brawl came to a halt mainly in suprise at the 'guest'.

Sam, that makes sense!
Alright its not on, but at the end of the day, a dad has seen his boy taking a few licks and wanted to protect him (however big burly and tough his son is).
Not quite the football equivalent of a man running onto a pitch in the middle of the game and trying to punch out the coach on the touchline for his religious beliefs. And then failing to get charged with assault by this countries authorities.

Re: Harionrodaquay's da jumps to his defence!
Lucien H apologised today for his behaviour saying he lost self-control for various reasons.
nevertheless, he could be brought to court and if found guilty , get up to 15 k€ fine, 1 year jail sentence and 5 years forbidden from entering any stadium. realistically he will not get charged.
brawls were much worst 10 years ago (in fact it was quite rare not to have one) so if anything rugby is much "nicer" on that regard.

Re: Harionrodaquay's da jumps to his defence!
You have to realize it was the Basque derby . And the Basque are really tough men ( and women ) . Biarritz and Bayonne are intricated into each other, twin towns . This Basque rugby is a big thing here, and the losers have a hard time days after the game . As the towns are stuck it's easy .
Here in the south-west, people have not completely understood the new professional era . Rugby has always been a sport of peasants and woodcutters in France, with quite a lot of handbags in and out of the field . We are very far from Oxbridge in the spirit of the game .
It used to be a war between villages or towns . And in the end, everybody drank and sang together .
What happened makes everybody laugh in France, and I guess no one would be willing to punish the old school Basque man . It reminds us a good old time of good old rugby . But well, no doubt the hateful globalized professional deathly coldly seriously non-French world of new rugby will strike .

Okay???
Spectator leaves the stand, enters the playing area and seems unsuccessful in landing a punch on a big, burly rugby player=....FFR may take a dim view.
Big, burly rugby player leaves the playing area, enters the stand and punches a much smaller, seated spectator several times in the face=...gallic shrug.
Odd that.
