BB - are you asking for peoples' opinions on the biggest names - or the ones they would buy?
Like burgers - most associated would be McDonalds but best would be Wendys

Re: Brands and associated products
Without really being able to describe it I think I know what you are getting at so here goes;
Drivers TM, callaway
Fairway woods titliest, ping
Hybrids ping, adams
Irons mizuno, titleist
Wedges vokey, cleveland
Putters scotty, ping
Balls titleist, bridgstone
Footware footjoy, adidas
Gloves nike, FJ
Carry/Stand bags ping, sun mountain
Trolley/Tour bags titleist,
DMD's what is a DMD?
Not all of them are what I would go for or what I understand to be the best in each category but it is just a feeling.

Re: Brands and associated products
Do people associate particular brands with certain types of people?
E.g. Wilson or Macgregor for old duffers.
Nike for Woods worshippers,
Titleist, those who have got sick of Woods and are now following Rory
TM for the gullible

Like burgers - most associated would be McDonalds but best would be Wendys
No way the best burgers are from 5 Guys, damn those are some seriously good burgers.
Not quite sure what the original OP is about, would it be what w think most people would associate brands to club or what we have/would buy.
So i'll assume it's what most people would associate with each item, not what I would, as that'd be a completely different list.
Drivers - Taylormade, Callaway
Fairway woods - Taylormade, Ping
Hybrids - Taylormade, Cobra(baffler)
Irons - Taylormade, Ping
Wedges - Cleveland, Vokey
Putters - Ping, Odyssey
Balls - Titleist, Srixon
Footware - FJ, Adidas
Gloves - FJ, Dunlop(the amount of these you see is unreal)
Carry/Stand bags - Ping, Taylormade
Trolley/Tour bags - Ping, Taylormade
DMD's - Skycaddie, Bushnell.
Thas the list I think would be most general to the majority of club golfers and non golfers, based on the amount of Aggressive marketing TM do I think its clear why they figure heavily on what I think people associate to that couple with the amount of club options they have out at anyone time.
If I was giving my list it would be as follows
Drivers - Adams, Nike
Fairway woods - Adams, Mizuno
Hybrids - Cobra, Adams
Irons - Cobra, Bridgestone
Wedges - Adams, Cleveland
Putters - Taylormade, Ping
Balls - Nike, Bridgestone
Footware - Ecco, Nike
Gloves - Bridgestone, FJ
Carry/Stand bags - Ping, Sun Mountain
Trolley/Tour bags - Cobra, Titleist
DMD's - Sky Caddie, Bushnell
Theres only a couple of cross overs on my list compared to what I think is in general associated with each area

Indeed SR I to do that. My associations would be.
TM for gullible flash prats - e.g my brother......
Titleist - those that are stuck with an old brand that really is not moving forward/ new rory bum crawlers
Wilson - Tennis players that make to transition to golf
Cleveland - Those that are trying to hard to be different
Cobra/Adams - Those that like quality products and want to play golf (being biased as I play them )
Queue a berating from those that play the above brands

Played against a guy who had his name stitched into his Nike tour bag (Prat) a while back, everything in it was also Nike.
Simply putting the name on his bag was enough to make me want to beat him.

Now imagine that in TM and thats my brother! Whenver we play together I have to tell him what a man sausage he looks, fortunately for him his handicap is low enough to utilise whats in his bag instead of looking like all the gear no idea, he still looks like a tool though!

Speaking perhaps as an old duffer, you've no idea how much I'd love to have my old and much treasured McGregor Eye-O-Matic driver back. Never had a driver before or since that I could hit the ball straighter with.

Can't find the old persimmon one which was just the job for me. Their newer drivers just don't give me the same feel.

Exactly what it says on the tin - Which mainstream brands do you associate with these product types? Not necessarily the one's you'd buy - just the brands which come to mind when thinking about particular products. Here are mine:
Drivers - TM, Callaway

Hybrids - Adams, TM
Irons - Mizuno, Titleist
Wedges - Vokey, Cleveland
Putters - Ping, Odyssey
Balls - Titleist
Footware - FJ, Adidas

Re: Brands and associated products
interesting patterns - most people listing the same brand/products on the whole, but many seem to be swimming against the current when it comes to their own perception of quality.
personally the only categories i don't have associated brands/products from my own list are drivers, woods, hybrids and putter. i'm a dead fish with the rest.

Isn't it amazing how we make assumptions based on how a player looks on the first tee.
Flash TM tour bag, full set of white headed woods and big cavity back irons = man sausage that can't hit a barn door.
Titleist carry bag, battered old set of 'players' blades, Titleist driver and 3 wood, scruffy old towel draped over the bag = Oops, I'm in for a stuffing today

My list is virtually identical to Davie's although I'd add adidas shoes in there.
Funnily enough, never thought of Ecco gloves before but bought a couple lat week and they are really nice. £11.99 for the leather ones which is reasonable compared to top of the range FJ and Titleist etc.

Interesting choice, I thought Bushnell would be the stock answer for most people. Leupold are best known for cameras/lenses??

Yes, they're better known for camera lenses, but their rangefinders are fantastic. I bought a GX-3 recently (seduced by the shiny chrome bits) and gave my Nikon away to one of my chums.
It's far more solid than a Bushnell or Nikon, as it's made from aluminum rather than plastic, and well worth the money despite the slightly higher price.

I wasn't aware of these Leupold lasers. They look really nice, with a vintage camera like finish.
I had a really nice Nikon in a metal case which I stupidly sold once I got a GPS. Should have kept it.

The advertising for dmds is astonishing. Skycaddie and bushnell and leupold all say 'legal for tournament play. How long is it going to be before someone stops them from saying something that is misleadingin two ways_ they are not allowed under the rules, and not allowed in most professional tournaments either.

I don't think its misleading at all. They are not allowed to openly state in advertising something which is not true.
DMD's are legal under R&A rules in all club competitions unless the specific club has a loval rule stating otherwise. They are also legal and allowed for use on the EuroPro tour, SkyCaddie even sponsor the tour.
Their not legal on ET and PGA tour through rulins the governing bodies set for their tournaments but they are allowed at club level and some pro levels. Only amateur events that don't allow iw are county and international level

No,that,s wrong. They are not allowed under the rules of golf. It's either 13.3 or 14.3 , can't recall which, that outlaws dmds unless there's a local rule allowing them. So if there's no local rule, they are illegal. So to say they are legal for tournament play is clearly both wrong and misleading, and that's why the ads should be stopped. According to the r and a less than half the clubs in the uk have the local rule, so I'd say it was highly misleading.

Ok then what about the EuroPro that does allow the use of them that's professional tournament play so all the while they allow it, its not false advertising as they can point to that as fact!

Re: Brands and associated products
OK,that's true but most ads in golf mags and websites are aimed at amateurs and not professionals. I suspect they mean club competitions when they say tournaments, people on here even refer to club events as tournaments, it sounds better than monthly medal. And if the rules say they are illegal, then I think the ads are misleading.

You seem to have a real bee in your bonnet over DMD's. The fact is, they are here to stay. It's all word play, R&A USGA, local rules. The fact remains that whichever way you slice and dice it, you ARE allowed to use them in the vast majority of club or open competitions. I play a lot of opens and I have never played in one that prohibits their use in the 3 years that I've had my laser.
And the bottom line is they speed up play, much quicker than pacing out a yardage from a post or sprinkler head.

Re: Brands and associated products
I don't have an issue with dmds. I have one.
It's the ambiguity in the rules that bothers me. Not allowed in the rules, but allowed by local rules is a recipe for misunderstanding, as maverick's post shows.
I want to avoid players being disqualified for doing something that they think is allowed in the rules bothers me. There was a prize giving at a club recently where five of the prizewinners were dqed when the club confirmed they hadn't passed the local rule.
This comes back, to the point I made on here about misleading advertising. It would help people to understand the rule if companies like bushnell didn't say things like 'legal for tournament play', without qualifying it.
