Amazing cricket facts/stats
First topic message reminder :
In the light of Hughes recent four innings, and all four being cGuptil bMartin, and probably never having occured before in Test Match cricket.(Of which I tried to check for, but found nothing).
I came upon these:
Alec Bedser the former England fast bowler is the only bowler to dismiss Bradman for a duck on more than one occasion.
Mike Hendrick of England in a Test vs. India clean-bowled Madan Lal leaving his middle stump upright and uprooting his off and leg stumps.
Bapu Nadkarni sent down 131 deliveries (21.5 overs) without conceding a single run vs. England at Madras in 1964.
India is the only team to be dismissed twice in a single day of a test match.
Clem Hill's scores in his first three Test innings was 99,98 and 97 runs.

Bradman never got out in the 90's I believe. Just too good.

Reminds me of Sreesanth every time he bowls, now that is superstitious

Talking of bowling superstitions, Steve Harmison would bowl a ridiculous wide in the first over of a test match during the Ashes....

When Neil McKenzie went out to bat, the dressing toilet seats had to be down, and flushed. Such was his paranoia that anyone inside one of the toilets was forced to come out and then go back in once the deed was done. I imagine he was not a popular man with team mates when they toured to the continent!

Another one I heard about McKenzie, althought I am not sure if it is as true as your one kia. Apparently, once his teammates taped his bat to the ceiling and he had to unpeel it minutes before he went out to bat and when he went out he scored a 100, and everytime he batted after that he had to tape his bat to the ceiling beforehand!

Australia have twice reached the record of 16 consecutive wins. West Indies in their pomp could only muster 11 wins and SA and Sri Lanka have 9 a piece. Maybe more cricket is played now but I always have the impression the Windies were a fortress at home whereas that is obviously the case for Australia but their away record was equally impressive.

I think draws were more common back in the 70's/80's. That might be one decent reason as to why they never got near 16.

Re: Amazing cricket facts/stats
Well that and the fact that the Aussies were just so damn good.
It´s funny though, when I think of the Windies I think of their bowling. As much as I admired bowlers like Lee, Warne, McGrath etc when I think of Australia I invariably think of their vast array of class batsmen - the Waugh brothers, Punter, Taylor, Hayden, Gilchrist ad nauseum...

The Aussies also had Warne.
That what makes the Aussies slightly better IMO.

Re: Amazing cricket facts/stats
There´s no doubt the Aussies were better. But the fact that the Windies often just had an all-out pace attack makes them more endearing to me. We´re tall, we´re fast and we´re going to knock your block off seemed to be their attitude. We don´t need to mix it up.
That said, I loved watching Warne bowl. Every ball he believed he could get you out. Even if you had been dominating him. To me he is the most influential cricketer of all time along with Bradman. They both did things that no other seemed able to do.

I'd say there is doubt. The West Indies didn't lose a test series for about 10 years.
A best of XI from these two sides would be interesting to pick.

Re: Amazing cricket facts/stats
Yeah that´s an impressive stat. Maybe that´s another thread. Apologies to going off track from the OP.
Geoff Allott faced 77 balls for his duck. That record always cracks me up, Would love to know how many times he touched the ball with bat.
Would love to also know if anyone has scored a fifty or a hundred without scoring a boundary in test cricket. I imagine a 50 would be easy enough but a century would be pushing it!

Thorpe scored a ton in Pakistan when England won there in the dark (this was in the first test which finished as a draw) which contained only 2 boundaries, one of which was after he reached his century.
Fairly sure Duminy scored 77 against Aus in an ODI without hitting a boundary.

I´ve tried to no avail to see the longest time to get off the mark who later scored a century. Or even the longest time to get off the mark. It always shows the longest duck!
I don´t know about fantastic Fists. More like shameful!

"Fairly sure Duminy scored 77 against Aus in an ODI without hitting a boundary"
Impressive performance for an ODI!!!
Might be worth looking at some of Neil Fairbrother and Michael Bevans's ODI performances for scoring lots of runs with few boundaries - both were so adept as quick singles and at placing the ball into gaps to make 2s and 3s that they could score quickly without resorting to power hitting..
One stat that always gest me is from the England v New Zealand test in the early 00s when Thorpe scored the (2nd?) fastest Test 200 in terms of balls faced, only for Nathan Astle to break the record in the next innings.

I've found the match in question on cricinfo. Duminy only scored 71 my apologies:

Re: Amazing cricket facts/stats
Astle scored 222 (a double Nelson! He should´ve faced the ball with one hand on the handle, on one foot and with one eye closed!) from 168 balls.
Sehwag replaced Tendulkar with highest ODI score recently with 219 off 149 delieveries.
We often talk about the hat-trick but Malinga has the record for most consecutive dismissals - 4. Surely he has earned the right to name that after his namesake. He got a Malinga.
I saw Jessie Ryder equal the first class record of 16 sixes against Australia A. He also has the record for most consecutive pies eaten.

Ricky Ponting has scored 2,000 more test runs than the entire New Zealand cricket team that played on Tuesday.

Back on the 'Hughes c Guptil b Martin' theme...
Do any of you realise that if Phil Hughes cuts himself shaving, then Martin Guptill automatically appears from out of the shaving cabinet with a piece of tissue paper... and a band-aid if necessary?
(I heard that one from Kerry O'Keefe the other day. He thought it was very funny of course...)

I remember seeing a photo of Dennis Lillee bowling with 9 slips to NZ.
Not sure if there´s ever been a dismissal by the 9th slip ever in cricket. Or any further out than 5.

Didn't England have a nine-slip field when Harmi was destroying the Windies in the Caribbean a few years ago.

Was that to get the nicks or avoid byes?

Re: Amazing cricket facts/stats
I´ve seen spin bowlers bowl to the tail-end with 9 around the bat in close-in positions. Doesn´t seem fair.
I remember PSW a fast bowler for NZ Heath Davis. He had genuine pace but was like a bowling machine set to random. There used to be a running joke that the square leg umpire had wickets painted on by square leg and the captain told him to aim for his stumps every time in order to get the ball on the real stumps or at least a lot closer.
I do remember Harmi though with his tendency for odd smelling fragrance deliveries: random spray.

Well, 7-12 by Harmison wasn't too bad, nor was 47 all out without, presumably, that many byes.

I can't recall but I'd be astounded if there wasn't a short leg in there...
I remember Australia once using 9 slips in an ODI against Zimbabwe (who were 9 down for not very many at the time). Adam Dale was the last man to join the slip cordon. In fairness he looked a bit sheepish. Think S. Waugh was the captain, so early 00s?

Former Indian captain Mohammad Azharuddin is the only batsman to ever score hundreds in the first three Test matches of their career.
