Lee Westwood. New World record?.
Lee Westwood has scored 60-64 for 20 under par at the Thailand Championship. Apparently, the world record for 4 rounds is -32.
Been watching it on TV and he's playing unbelievable golf. After most of his approach shots have ended up within 5 feet he and Billy Foster have been smiling at each other, almost as if their embarrassed at how easy he's making the game look.
Before anyone says it must be an easy course, Amata Springs is anything but easy. When he finished his second round he was 13 shots clear of a very good field.

It's a course that clearly suits his eye. Amazing going really. Bit of a Shane his best form has come so late in the year but looking good for 2012.

I'm with Diggers I think. Pity it's the end of the season. Can he keep this form in to the Masters? Hope so but quite a challenge.
Ridiculously good scoring though.

Re: Lee Westwood. New World record?.
I remember the Dubai World Championship a couple of years ago when Lee won comfortably. It was a similar performance then when everything he hit was close and all his putts dropped.
In fairness to Westwood though, his driving and approach play is always top notch. Its normally his putting that lets him down.
When he won the nedbank the commentators were saying he's been spending hours extra working on putting. Its starting to show in his scores.

Digs, when you said Westwood's form was a bit of a Shane, i had a vision of him riding off on a horse with the trophy in one arm, other arm drooped down by his side, unsure whether he made it out alive or not...............

It's rare for a player to be so hot in 2 consecutive days. Usually, there is a bit of a let down after a really low round. But, hats off to him that's an amazing standard of play.

MPB, I blame the IPhone for my poor spelking.
As it goes watched a bit of Shane the other day, still a great film.

He's got the game to score like this on a regular basis. It's only his putting that prevents him from doing so. If he could putt with any sort of consistency he'd have 5+ majors by now.

Re: Lee Westwood. New World record?.
His putting might have let him down in the past but that was a real knee-trembler he holed at the last (a good 9 feet and downhill, down grain) to make sure he didn't have a bogey on his card after two rounds. He said in his interview afterwards that was the shot which gave him the most satisfaction all day.

I see Sergio just made the cut at 3 over. Just your 23 shots behind.
Must be a record difference between 1st player and the cut surely.

He's already within two shots of the record European Tour margin of victory; another 60 and a second 64 should sort that out.

I think a lot will depend on how the course will be set up for the last two days.
If the organisers want to keep scoring down there's some diabolical pin positions they could use. Hopefully they will provide a fair test for all the golfers and not try to penalise Lee for twice taking the course apart.
Either way, it will provide some interesting viewing.

Others:
-6: Daly
-5: Jeev Milkha

Not good for Ishikawa who will probably depart the top 50 after this effort(?).

What's the record for having the biggest halfway lead and losing I wonder, hopefully that won't be another record he breaks this week.

If that happened, it would be hard to get over. Imagine playing 2 rounds as well as you have possibly done in the past and end up losing the tournament?

I was actually thinking the same thing. Imagine playing like that for two days and not winning!
No one's mentioned Charl and i've not seen much of the highlights aside from LW, but i assume Snorkel must have played some pretty awesome stuff too?

Indeed , it's not like he has an average guy chasing. Could be very interesting if Charl gets a flyer.

Cheers Kwinni.
I have been out seeing Father Christmas with 'the littlies' at Dumfries House [where they have the £20m bed]. So catching up.
Great win for Lee.

Diggers seems to have gone very quiet on this one.
Great win by Lee, and Charl showed that anyone can have a 'mare on the last day.
Good win by Poulter in Australia as well. Moves both he and Lee up a place or two in the OWRG.

Another poor tournament from Clarke. I suppose it doesn't really matter when you're Open Champ!
Does anyone know if he's getting appearence fees?

You'd call a 69 for a final round a bad round would you? He had three rounds in the 60's and one round of 73. Hardly struggling over the line.

Let's face it, the fact he played well for a month or so bucked the trend of his career in recent years. Not suprised to see him do little since the Open.

With a 14 shot lead, that at one stage yesterday was down to 2 shots. Yes that's limping over the line (by 7).

He was being chased by Schwarzel and its difficult to play like he did the first 2 rounds all the way through. No way that was struggling over the line.

He didn't struggle over the line. It was more akin to having a bad patch and then finding a second win and powering away to a comfortable victory.

Struggling? That's all he needed after a 60-64 start! Wonder how many other players would like to 'struggle' to a 7-shot victory?

If he was going after the World record, his puff ran out with 2 laps to go.

I don't think he was going for a record. Main aim would have been to win.

Re: Lee Westwood. New World record?.
Lee never mentioned the world record - the press did. As S-R says, all he was trying to do was win the tournament and that he did - in style. His first two rounds were phenomenal and it was not surprising that he had a bit of a blip on Saturday but he followed that up with a solid under par round on Sunday and it was Charl who "struggled" and cracked under pressure.
What is it with this Lee Westwood hate club?
