The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
First topic message reminder :
Welcome to the Virtual Rugby Pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the wedding pictures of Father Christmas, Sean Lamont and Paddy Wallace above the bar!
So pull up a chair....what'll it be?

Hmm, bit of a stretch that, Mickado - nobody knows for certain why the henges and circles were erected, and don't forget that the sun rose in a slightly different part of the sky all those thousands of year ago - I recommend this book if you are interested: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/1851094776Mickado wrote:Today is the day that Newgrange was built for.
At sunrise on the morning of Dec 21st the sun shines down the passageway and lights up the burial chamber. A serious piece of astrological engineering considering it was built over 5000 years ago!

Lucky - the Dragons v Chief match was live on S4C so it might still be up on Clic?
Swanny - congrats on getting the job application done! I am not looking forward to starting to fill my own out in the new year
And morning all, hope everyone's well!

Some great rugby there, Mickado. Leinster are a joy to watch when they're on song.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
But as, it’s neither a henge nor a circle. It’s a burial tomb.
And you could be right that the sun rose differently 1000’s of years ago but it’s a bit strange that the burial chamber is only fully filled with light on the winter solstice, which is a known pagan festival. I’m no expert (obviously) but that’s what we were always told in school.

Sorry, was lumping them all under a single label - it's a similar story at Maeshowe in Orkney - the light wouldn't have been quite at the right angle to flood down the corridor as is often claimedMickado wrote:But as, it’s neither a henge nor a circle. It’s a burial tomb.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Hi all.
It would seem a massive coincidence if Newgrange simply happened to fill the chamber with light on the Winter solstice. Too big a coincidence.
If the sun did rise differently years ago my only theory is that Newgrange builders were catering for the 21st century tourism industry.

The changes to the sun rise have been taken into account. The sun hits the chamber a few minutes after sun rise nowadays but 5000 years ago it would have been bang on.

The Irish are known as great builders and doing everything first. A prime example would be our whiskey being around before the Scots one....

Yes and it was Welsh missionaries that kicked it off. Whiskey is Welsh for 'dog sweat' a reflection of heat causing greater potency.

That looks like an interesting book ASBO? ....I read somewhere that our calendar is out of synch with the orbits, its too slow or something and that some of the ancient civilizations like the mayans had a superior understanding of astrology than we currently do. Not sure how true that is though.

The club are trying all sorts to attract fans, which is a good thing. Glad they are being pro active about it and trying to get bums on seats, as 6-8 thousand at the MadStad doesn't create great atmosphere, we need to be trying to push on to over the 10,000 mark.
