The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
First topic message reminder :
Welcome to the Virtual Rugby Pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the wedding pictures of Father Christmas, Sean Lamont and Paddy Wallace above the bar!
So pull up a chair....what'll it be?

Can't beat a Scarlets v O's derby match!
Unfortunately the way it is in Ireland, it's nowhere near as big. There's going to be a training camp for the national side which means all the internationals will be missing.
Still be more fans at the inter-pros though!

That's true, the only tickets available for Ulster vs Munster are behind the goals. Only 300 tickets left in the ground as a whole, so I'd say there will be well over 11,000 for that game. But then it's a big tradition for a lot of families to go over the holidays. I know a few casual fans who only go with their family over Christmas. Normally on Boxing Day.

If I didn't then I seriously meant to!
Will add him and Wilko to the one of Chris Patterson in the next pub.
Cheers dreamer
And another question...
Different newspapers and websites are fond of posting things like 'team of the week.' I think they should also be encouraged to publish a 'referee of the week' too.
Anyone agree?
It would give the guys in the middle some recognition.

Fair enough Hound.
I'm sure every club has their undesirables.
Except Scarlets of course.
They are the epitomy of "Rugby" in every facet!

But of course MrsP!
I am actually starting to get a bit worried about being able to go to the Scarlets v O's match. My Dad's hurt his back somehow, which for him is not good (he has a long and not very nice history with back injuries), so he's struggling to stand for any long periods of time. Really hope he feels better by Monday (otherwise I'll have to attempt to nab a lift of my cousin)

But isn't the fact that contracts are already restricted for NIQ players already similarly dodgy?
Interesting poll this;

I bet if you included the North as well, rugby might even be the second most popular sport.

Two things,
I love that Dreamer's concern about her dad's back extends (or so it would appear) only as far as her lack of transport to the game!
And,
That Glas thinks even Irish lawyers are guilty of "Negativity"!

Dublin winning the football isn't an outstanding acheivement. They get the msot funding. They should have won it 2 years ago. Cluxton winning the award is no surprise though

Oops! Guess it does appear like that. Well okay yes, partly concerned I won't be able to get to the match, but more so would be really disappointed for him if he can't go, he really does love his rugby (and I love going to matches with him).

I'll tell you what's wrong with this country:
Soccer was the favourite sport for 30.9pc of those polled, with Gaelic games at 20.9pc, just marginally ahead of rugby at 20.5pc.

Notch, Dublin were favourites this year. Nothing I have said there isn't true. They have one or two outstanding players, a very well structured gameplan and some very decent players. Solid as a rock is what they are.

All depends who they asked and where.
Ask the people of Kerry, Mayo, Offaly, Kilkenny, Wexford, Laois, Westmeath, Sligo etc what their favourite sport is and you may not get the same answer as in Dublin, Limerick, Cork, Waterford etc.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
I am a bit bitter but what I've actually said today is true. Dublin capitulated against Cork two years agao and they did in the league final. They summoned some fierce mental strength in the championship to get it done especially in the last few minutes so hats off to them. They showed a toughness I didn't think they had. There was no doubting their quality it's the mental side that let them down. Looking forward to some quality battles with them over the next few years.

Something decidedly WRONG with that.
Do 30% of the people polled go to League of Ireland games? Do they phook. We’re a nation that’s obsessed with sports teams from another country, which are owned by people from another country than that and with players from all around the world. And the sad thing is that on the world stage, they’re not even the best. So it’s not like Irish people love the breathtaking football played in the premiership, otherwise they’d all support Barca.
Whereas our sports, the ones we invented, languish behind because we saturate our media coverage with crappy football, and even the sports that ARE played by Irish people, are behind it. Leinster are the European champions, the Holland of ’78 of the rugby world (according to Tony Ward) yet in most pubs in Dublin people would rather watch Kiddeminster in a mid table clash against Crewe.
Isn't sport supposed to be an expression of your identity? I am a Dublin fan, and I am a Leinster and Ireland fan, i'd tatoo that on my face it if wasn't so tacky. But i'll wear my heart on my sleeve at their games and scream my face off for them. I can't do that if i don't care about a team, and i can't understand how anyone can care for a team that has as much connection with them as with any consumer on the other side of the planet.
Wrong.
(in my opinion)

Whether we like it or not, we are inextricably linked to England and that is why we are saturated by football. Though, I promise you, it is much better in Ireland than it is in England where it is very hard to realise there is another sport.

(in my opinion)
Most of your bands that you would like aren't Irish. Most of the films you like wouldn't be Irish. Most of the TV you would like isn't Irish. yeh there is some that you like but what's the big deal with liking something that has originated from another country. Why aren't these things an expression of your identity. and if they are (which they are) why isn't the same expectation that you should like all things Irish with regards above? If you like something and get more enjoyment from elsewhere, what difference does it make that its not originating from your home country?
I was a big GAA fan for many years. playing and attending the games. I don't overly care for that sport as much any more. I don't associate sport with my identity for everything. I love Leinster because I am from Leinster agreed that's where it came from first.
I tried supporting FAI football but I don't rate it. so therefore I started following Man United as a kid. Barcelona wouldn't be as easily accessible on your TV stations as they are now a days. so its just something you grow up with and get used too..

Of course music and movies arent the same. They aren't linked to who you are, or certainly not who I am. As soon as people meet me, within the hour they know about my love of sport, but I don't carry a Muse supporters club card with me, or pin a picture of Florence on my wall in work.
Sport is tribal. Music is just art, you can take your pick. Im not having a go at you, just giving my opinion.

I agree with Mick. Geography is by no means the only type of connection you can have to a team but the strenght of Irish peoples links to Liverpool FC, Man Utd etc is staggering.

I think there is one sports team that I don't have a Geographical link too.
Stag, I suppose a lot of Irish people moved to Liverpool during the Famine but that isn't the reason people support them. Let's face it if Accrington Stanley were popular and winningthe premiership people would be supporting them. Chelsea gained a lot of fans over a 4/5 year period.
Cork City/GAA: from there
Munster: from there
Leeds: dad supports them
Ireland: from there
Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Uncle lives there/ spent a lot of time there

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
I know mate.
I just don't think there is a huge difference. all things we love form our identity. Sport might be tribal to you. But it isn't for 30% of those people or at least the ones that like the foreign teams don't class it as Tribal.
Your Leinster/Dublin is a huge part of your identity.
Take my brother for example Music is a huge part of his identity. He doesn't really have something in sport that aligns himself to something Irish.
Our hobbies, Interests form our personality and identity as we grow up.
Sport I can see what you are saying in terms of location etc. But I have friends that are die hard Leeds fans. this is not because they are from Leeds or have any geographical affiliation to Leeds.
It's because their Grand-dad who played a huge part in their identity was an avid fan most likely due to the Irish connection that they had there in the 60's.
It forms their identity but not one that is obvious to their location.

I don't believe it was Stag but either way the point is valid. but if you see my other post about the Leeds example I don't feel just because they aren't from there that it makes one bit of difference to how passionate they are about that team.
They have taken there love/passion for that team from someone that they love and were close to. You can go through the generations and find out who it was that decided to follow that team on a whim but as it goes through the generations the passion that's picked up from the previous generation can and is just as real as me or you following our provinces in Rugby

Micky, what I would find it strange is if people use "we" when reffering to that team. I would never say "we" when reffering to the Bucs or Leeds. It just doesn't feel right as I'm not from there nor do I play from them.

That's where we disagree, Ive heard comments from a Hammers fan in Molloys slagging a Liverpool fan because Spurs beat Everton
"London teams are better than Liverpool teams"
Well that's not where we disagree, cause that is just silly alright. that's a minority. For example. as a United fan albeit not as big as other friends, I don't overly care if Man City won the league over Man U this year because of the location and rivlarly of the team.
I don't have that hatred of Man City that someone from there could claim to have.

I have no great problem with people supporting teams of any sport which they have no true connection but it is difficult to listen to lectures about not supporting "foreign" sports given by folks wearing a Celtic top.
Some Irish sports fans want it both ways.
By the way, I'm sure you all know that I am not talking about anyone here, just folks in general!

Ye Thom, I would agree there. although if they mean WE as in "US MAN U/LEEDS supporters etc that's fair enough.
But not based on location

That sketch conveys my thought really. It depends Mick if I said "we hammered Notts Forrest last week" that just sounds stupid like.
