First topic message reminder :

Welcome to the Virtual Rugby Pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.

The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the wedding pictures of Father Christmas, Sean Lamont and Paddy Wallace above the bar!

So pull up a chair....what'll it be?

Glas,

Gotta get the lingo now we have a "Hoops" player in the family!

Poor kid was out in a howling gale today try to shoot some baskets. It has been too windy to get her own hoop up, we tried and it blew over and hit her wee sister.

MrP took her to the park today despite the weather to try out the shoes and ball at least!

Which point about the Scarlets Glas? About your version of the dark arts?

Yea I took a few days off 606.

MrsP - Sean Scanlon who was at 15. Munstys lad was Luke O'Dea who was at 14. I think Paddy Butler will have big Munster future ahead of him. The youngest player in the entire Musnter squad and has carried well in the games he has played at #8.

Didn't know your sis was unwell Thomond. I hope its just a bout of the Winter sniffles and nothing more serious.

Yea Scanlon looked good alright. Made a good break, scored a good try and was solid in defence. Can't ask for more on a debut.

Evening all, not long been back in the flat and have been welcomed back with a leaking bathroom tap (it's been on the blink for a while), and had a mental 20 mins where I just couldn't switch it off, water was everywhere! Managed to get it down do just a bit more than a trickle now, am hoping my flatmate can sort it properly when he gets in from the pub.

Thomond - hope your dad and sister get better soon Hug

Well the PS3 is offically for MrP and he is....old enough.

The kids are 8-15 but I suspect the 13, 12 and 10 year olds are the ones who it will interest most.

Apparently it was supposed to come with a choice of one of three free games. They didn't have any of MrPs 1st or 2nd choice games left so they let him have the game he wanted to buy free!

It's called...sky something, I think!

Nothing major anyway so it will all be grand in a few days.

Skyrim is supposed to be a quality game. Jonah Lomu Rugby Challenge and the old reliable Fifa 12

The New Sonic
may interest the kids and MrP!

Would you allow the kids to play games that are for older age groups? i.e a game rated 15 or 16?

Probably not. I would have to let MrP decide because I have no idea about any of these games.

I know the wee fella has played that COD thing at friend's houses along with his friend's much younger sibling.

He is nearly 14 so I suppose a 15 would be okay. I wouldn't want them playing anything too violent. What are they like, these games?

The games I told you about above are sports games and Sonic is a platofrm game which means you run about the gaff collecting things and getting involved in minor scuffles. Sonic gameplay can be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tV1Osnkr5Nc

COD is more violent, it involves guns and a fair bit of killing ,the oldest should be fine with it. But the younger ones might get a bit scared.
Example of what you do: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=995kDu_ZO3s

Uncharted 3 is a bit of a mix of the two. It's a fabulous game that I completed yesterday. A fair bit of shooting in it but the violence aspect isn't the most important. Uncharted gameplay: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mwywuVzrJTg and 1and 2 can be bought
here and the 3rd would be bought separately.

Also if you got onto youtube/Google and type in any game with gameplay at the end you will more than likely be able to see what they're like. OK

Last Call of Duty game I played was the only time I have felt genuinely disturbed and repelled by video game violence- or, in fact, any recreation of violence in any book, film or game. Having read American Psycho thats quite some achievement. It was this that did it for me;

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UQFnZIYQTJA

It was partly the fact that you sneak up on a sleeping Vietnamese villager and brutally kill him, but mainly that it's laced with this American exceptionalism; in doing that you do it because you are the good guy. It's presenting the CIA/extraordinary rendition types as the hero and acts of violence and torture as... what? Morally admirable? A necessary price? Or just a cool thing for a cut-scene?

I think some of the stuff in Cod: Black Ops is seriously f**ked up. That and the scene where you and your CIA buddies capture someone and torture them by smashing a window, putting glass in their mouth and punching them in the face.

Hey Kids! Press X to legitimise battlefield torture! U-S-A!

Not a fan of CoD AT ALL. Somewhere between entertainment and indoctrination. I'd still consider playing it mind you. After all I am an adult and capable of assessing the media in an objective fashion. 99% of the content is generally fine, though they like to push the line with some seriously questionable sh!t. No Russian anyone?

Notch I didn't have Black Ops but the Modern Warfare sets are slightly tamer. It can be a bit heavy at times.

Yeah I would have to add that; the Modern Warfare series is actually a lot less graphic in my experience.

Here's the other one from BlackOps I was on about;

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OHksOOv77YM

Look, this shouldn't be viewed any differently from a film showing the exact same thing. It's just something you have to be mature enough to make an objective assessment about.

I'm not even going to click on that link Notch!

I'm pretty sure COD is absolutely off the list!

Thing is, the parents of this wee fella are sensible folks. In fact i'd say they are really conservative and yet their 9 and 11 year olds were playing COD with my lad and his pal.

Thanks a million for the info Thomond.

I suspect there may be a few battles/discussions ahead for this house. This is one of the reasons we have not had this sort of thing in the house up till now.

I hope I don't regret getting it now!!

Brilliant synopsis.

They sell the butchers-flag within the game and make it seem righteous. And fun. Brainwashing kids via fun. Nice. Are the CIA really actually involved their design? Headscratch

From what I remember from growing up MrsP, I think the only shooting sort of game we had was Goldeneye 007 on the N64. Lots of shooting in that but not overly violent, we just used to find it quite funny. Otherwise we just had more like mission games like Zelda or multiplayer games like Mario Kart, so there are absolutely loads of options for games out there. Didn't stop the fights though, think its par for the course when you've got more than 1 child wanting to play on it! (that and the three of us are all quite uber competative Wink )

You won't MrsP. The first Modern Warfare is probably the tamest of the lot it's 16 and would be got very cheaply online anyway. There would be plenty of games that are suitable and fun. Little Big Planet one and Two would interest the youngest of the Ps I'd say. You have a Wii, I take it from Gibbo's earlier comments? The youngest will gain the most from that as it's geared to the younger kids. I'm coming across as a real Nerd here . Dreamer I hear that Goldeneye was supposed to be one fo the best games ever but I would have only been a bábog when it was out.

I'd say there'd be no real damage or risk in it though.

I used to do the same growing up at the very same age, playing 18-rated video games at my friends house, battles with my mum over what I was and wasn't allowed and hours of fun shooting people in the head. And I was grand, of course, as the vast majority are.

Most of these games have the option to turn off profanity and violence (though if the parents can work out how to turn it off the kids can certainly work out how to turn it back on! laughing )

The game I played was an 18 certificate for a reason, the current one is a 15 certificate I understand. It's probably no all that bad.

Thomond - ah Goldeneye was utterly brilliant, we used to play on it for hours. Think I was 10 when we got it. I did not enjoy the use of mines! They would get me every time Sad

Multi player was the best on it, especially when you unlocked all of the features. One of them was DK mode if I recall correctly so everyone had a giant head. Baron Samedi was the best one with the big white hat on his head (appreciate this is a random description, but it used to have us all Laugh )
